Any fool knows that counterfeiting is absolutely endemic in China, it even has tacit approval of the State. The problem is that it's being pursued by the least credible country in the world, America uses intellectual property rights like gangster. Their entire approach to IP is nothing short of a global protection racket where any worthless and frequently generic idea (Amazon's "One-click" being a case in point) becomes patentable and entire swathes of the English language are co-opted as trademarks and logos.

China is in a very strong position - given their economic growth and their huge reserves of foreign currency (the US practically relies on them buying dollars to keep their economy afloat) I don't think Beijing will feel under any pressure to do anything.

Antigua recently won a ruling against the States over their mishandling of internet gambling laws and, like previously, will in all likelihood ignore the ruling. Now they want to file a case with the WTO?!? WTF?

The White House can't have it both ways. Picking and choosing which rulings to abide by and which ones to ignore is just another nail in the coffin that was American prestige.

You want to stop movie piracy in China, there's a perfect solution. Start adding things that the Chinese government finds subversive into the movies. Add scenes from things like Tienanmen Square in the background of the movie. If the Chinese government doesn't want the people to see the information in the movie they will stop the movies. If all the movies have scenes then they won't allow piracy anymore.

Anyone who goes to a knock off CD/DVD retailer in China will see that the market for non East Asian film and music is pretty small.

If the pirated stuff wasn't there it would be probably be non existent. From what I've see, the Koreans probably have more cause for complaint, but I guess they still sell real stuff to China.
