    Not completely free

    While many of Google's services are free, Google Earth offers a few different for-pay versions that are required for some features (ie faster access, better resolution, mapping features, etc).

    Google Earth's image resolution is identical for all versions. There's a higher *print* resolution available but that's not exactly the same thing.

    They say:

    Still...

    It's true they've got premium versions of some apps (same true of Sketchup), but overall you can't argue with the benefits of cashed up companies buying things and making them free.

    And, to their credit, they haven't embedded ads *inside* the apps, which would be a temptation when that's your chief revenue source.

    A finger in every pie

    The problem with Google is they knock out idea after idea and purchase service after service but they rarely actually expand any of them to a finished status.

    They spend so much effort trying to get the next big idea out that they never bother finalising any of them! It's frustrating for other people because Google rush to get an idea out doing a half arsed job while someone else has spent time doing the job properly but launches too late.
