Please. It's Sony. They have a raging hardon for creating new proprietary formats. Lucky for us, most of them fail.

They're only remembered for the ones that do though.
These Sony things didn't fail...
Compact Disc (sony/philips)
DVD (jointly with many other vendors)
MF2 (otherwise known as the 3.5" floppy disk)
Minidisc (it wasn't a huge consumer success but it was a big broadcast audio success)
The Aperture Grille CRT (Trinitron, to you and me)

etc.
