    manufacturing cost

    Seems to me that while the key to making hard drives more economically is indeed a function of volume, it serves no purpose to make more drives a more manufacturing facilities. So, one has to conclude it's not unlikely to close or idle one facility and use the capacity of another under-utilized facility to fill orders previously filled by the former.

    Sorry but who writtes the headlines....

    I'm married to one those "only 7000+" persons working in Fujitsu Navanakorn plant in Thailand, and the daily fear of losing there jobs is very imminent and it's like a "closecall" feeling all the time.

    Staff are told noting, although Thai management executive have told office and production staff that today (Monday the 2nd of Feb.) there will be a meeting for all production staff (2000 a team) to inform them about layoff plans. The situation right now is, that 2 out of 3 assembly lines are shut down, no overtime, many work 4 to 5 days a week instead of 5 to 6 days a week for peanuts. Productionstaff with 10 year up with no OT gets less then 8000 (220$) bath a month for a 5 day 9 hour working day.

    According to the latest info it will be at least 2.600 + staff, who will be laid off in the end of this month with some or none compensation in an ER program. But the future doesn't look to bright, though. Staff are demotivated and many are going to apply for this program, as they don't trust the management who never tells them anything.

    Therefore : It's wrongly, when theregister makes a sub-headline that no one is loosing there jobs, cos that's TOTALLY WRONG
