Conspiracy Theory 101

If you believe in conspiracy theories, this is very simple. The DD founders wanted to cash out but either didn't want to shop the company around or couldn't get the price that they wanted. Since DD is a short way away from NetApp, we can guess that the execs are chummy. NetApp pretends to want to buy DD to get EMC interested. EMC bites and after a pretend tug of war (like with your dog) they get DD. DD employees migrate en masse down the road to NetApp, leaving EMC with an empty shell. It's SO perfect!

FAIL

... FAIL detected.

1) Data Domain boxes actually do have a VTL mode, it's just an add-on.

2) DD may not have direct tape duplication functionality, but that can certainly be done by software.

3) DD also does post-process dedupe on top of inline.

Other than that, great article.

Stop

What?

DD does NOT do post-process. Where did you get that idea?

BTW, Dell does NOT license DXi. They are only reselling EMC's version of DXi.

The power of dedupe demonstrated

To see some of the power of these dedupe technologies, take a look at my screencast of Symantec's PureDisk product here:
