    Oh, the Irony...

    "The Hewlett Foundation, which has $6.9bn in assets under management, has been making grants since 1967 and is dedicated to educational and environmental issues."

    ... And which large company has the current world record for excessive packaging?

    Mine's the one made of bubble wrap, cardboard, and packing tape.

    totally irrelevant

    As a total irrelevant comment but the organizations named as giving donations are also the usual suspects any regular NPR (USA equivalent to the BBC) listener will recognize. I wonder if the right wing nuts will go after wikipedia now. In wikipedias defense Colbert showed how Wikipedia can define group think reality which is so precious to the right.

    That's the way to do it!

    Keep it free!

    Keep wiki-ism free from state sponsorship and fully open to corporate or personal sponsorship.

    The world is a better place for the fulfillment of freedoms.

    (Okay Wiki - that will be 10% of all incoming pleez :-) )

    Paying contributors = Fail

    There are enough problems with editing wars on Wikipedia, make a copy of the model where money is thrown into the mix and all hell would break loose. There would certainly be a lot more incentive for people to game the system.

    If you're going to pay contributors, then you need to spend a lot of money to work out exactly who you should be paying, and might as well just set it up as a regular commercial encyclopaedia. Oh wait... those failed, didn't they? :p

    Google should *buy* it???

    Why buy it, when they could copy the whole content for free, then stop Wikipedia from appearing at the top of every bloody search (just edging out the masses of spamvertised sites Google is usually crawling with)?

    Hewlett heirs != HP

    But i think you knew that.

    Also, they might give more once wiki uses this cash judiciously...
