If they have built to the agreed standards, then they are not shunning anyone or anything.
If someone decides not to build to those standards and to inter-operate with others, that is entirely their choice and they simply limit their customer base.

Sounds almost like the useful parts of Google Wave without the user-baffling conceptual complexity of Wave?

If they built it to an open web standard then surely wouldn't it work in Opera too?
