back to article Fujitsu gung-ho on eight-core 'Venus' Sparc

Is Japan's 10 petaflops supercomputer on the chopping block? Fujitsu won't say. But it's still bullish on the Sparc chips meant to drive the thing. The word out of Japan last week was that a budget-cutting panel was recommending that the government cut back on its supercomputer spending habit, with the $1.2bn "Project Keisoku" …

    It's SPARC not Sparc

At least The Reg is consistent, but consistently wrong ... it's SPARC and not Sparc. And, it's trademarked.

Hey, note the first citation of the Fujitsu paper cites a University of Edinburgh paper.

(the citation was my Lattice 2004 plenary talk).

I guess they cite us because they copied the 6d torus idea.

    Anyway, remember this:

but you can still influence them.

    Once Again

Once again --- Sun never fabricated their own chips. Fujitsu's chip is a sparc clone. They have always worked with Sun.

Any word on SPARC VIII for commercial?

I heard there is no commercial version of Venus. Basically Fujitsu has given up on the M-Class systems now that Oracle will own Solaris and only wants to sell the CMT chips which require lots of cores. Sun's roadmap still has "uncommitted" on the SPARC64 VIII chip.
