back to article Google, Microsoft, and Amazon - the cloud dating game

What's a cloud? The likes of Amazon, Microsoft, and Google can't agree on an answer to that question. But they insist it exists. And they're sure it's the answer to all your problems. Which means there's also a difference of opinon when it comes to your problems. But, really, all will be well if you just move to the cloud. …

"cloud" is currently a marketing term.

And it's a marketing term used by people who don't understand that it's a catch-all for the word "network", as used by the '80s and early '90s textbooks describing packet switching, which were trying to teach upper-level protocols (OSI's so-called "presentation layer", mainly), without confusing people with info about the lower layers that actually transport the data.

Isn't anyone, anywhere, still teaching "from the ground up" IT anymore? When was the last time anybody read RFC 1958 for content ... and did anyone ever compare & contrast it with RFC 3439 as a term paper, fer Gawd/ess's sake? Those RFCs are both less than 15 years old, and 3439 is only about 7 years old! Did anyone ever even read it after it was published? Do basics even matter anymore?

Kids these days ... We're doomed. Doomed, I tells ya!

Was this a slip or a joke?

    Surely not

"Microsoft’s approach sounds as if it will make IT more complicated"

    Nooo, Microsoft? Can't believe it.

Like the Bing slip, there. I didn't think anyone was a big enough w*nker to say "Bing something."

    Perfect Storm

As a mere ordinary member of the public with very limited knowledge of computing, I see Cloud Computing as an end to steal the business of billions of vendors, service engineers and software writers world wide.

To succeed, the ultimate cloud needs the worlds population to be using it in a Google like fashion. Perhaps spending an extra small percentage on top of their ISP fee each year to be cloud connected.

People will no longer require shops to purchase any software and will no longer need to update anything. The average Joe will no longer have any interest in how anything works and will no longer learn anything from what they are doing with computers when updating hardware/software and making it all work. The average user will be dumbed down to just email and browsing.

The whole world of computer technology exists only because the individual has their very own identity to offer original input to every aspect. If all anyone needs is a simple drone machine to access the cloud where all software and hardware development is controlled by a few rich people trying to grab the last penny in the pot for themselves, then their greed will destroy the world.

A super cloud can only bring a super storm and it will reek havoc and devastation on everyone and everything, especially if the hackers try to seed it, we could all end up to our necks in Bing.
