    Funny Math in Play

    Okay, someone needs to explain to me how HP plus the acquisition of a 2010 Gartner "Challenger Quadrant" in 3 Par gives HP visionary leadership. How can HP be a bigger storage visionary than the proven storage technology thought leadership of EMC, NetApp, and IBM? This does not make any sense to me. What does HP have in their toolkit that compares to Compellent, Nimble, SVC, Atmos, Data Domain, or the WAFL file system. With their financial pressures, they may have to slash their R & D too.

    I think you should maybe have a look at what HP are doing with 3PAR, P4000, StoreOnce iBrix. All fairly recent, but proven architectures with scale out capabilities, as opposed to the 20+ year old architectures being peddled by the visionaries you mention above. The reason they're there on the magic quadrant is that in 3PAR, they have the best midrange / highend array on the market and they are executing in that space. At the low end the P4000 is eating Netapp for lunch, and the B6200 StoreOnce box out performs Data domain without all the offloading via boost nonsense.

      He is stating that you cannot be a thought leader in the storage industry if all you do is buy other peoples' technology. EMC, IBM, NetApp, for the most part, create their own systems. HP buys companies, doesn't invest while they are viable technologies (see EVA and DEC StorageWorks or using HDS as high-end), throws the old stuff aside, and then buys some new gear.

    The scope for this MQ is "block-access, external controller-based, mid-range and high-end modular disk arrays".

    So Data Domain, StoreOnce, Ibrix, SVC, Atmos, or the WAFL file system aren't in the comparison.

    Dell: Equalogic and Compellent

    EMC: VNX and VMAX

    HP: 3PAR, EVA and P4000
