This is the January VMware RIF that's being talked about.

[disclaimer - I work for VMware]

This is not an additional reduction in force at VMware, rather the one announced and executed at the end of January. (Written about here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01/29/vmware_q4_2012_numbers_layoffs/ )

    Meh

    Why 1004

Why not 1000? or are the 4 people they really want to get rid of

VMware Plans To Add Net 1000 jobs in 2013

This isn't exactly accurate, as the other comments noted, VMware's cuts have already occurred as part of a company focus on hybrid cloud, virtualization and the software defined datacenter. Certain elements of the business have been removed, such as selling SlideRocket and in the same earning call that they announced the cuts VMware also emphasized that it was still expanding, and said it planned to add a net 1,000 jobs in 2013.

mod edit - this chap appears to work for VMware

    Here come da trainwreck

Cloud storage and tons of on-prem storage competitors, plus Hyper-v, KVM and Xen market share gains (VMware displacements) and it doesn't take a lot of thought to see what is really happening here. Planned job cuts almost always happen, whereas planned hiring increases are mostly PR fodder to keep the stock price up. Even if it were true, 1,000 out and 1,000 in isn't exactly a growing company. But, it is a company letting go of high paid workers and bringing in cheap labor to help the bottom line. Morale is gonna suck, if it doesn't already.

VMWare needs to come with something really good soon

Otherwise its market is going to begin to dwindle pretty quickly.

New customers are not going to come if they get acceptable performance/reliability from Hyper-V or if they just drink the cool-aid from MS.
