back to article Surface Pro 2 dim screen of death snafu STILL happening after patch

A December update for the Intel-based Microsoft Surface Pro 2 tablets has been pulled as it was making things worse. It was supposed to fix a problem which resulted in the screen dimming to such an extent it was unreadable, but led to greater issues. The withdrawal of the patch was, however, too late for some users who …

Actually I told you, many, many times that Linux was rubbish and that you should buy a system designed by IT professionals !

    Oh wait ..

That so many people were taken in by the advertising and went and bought one amazes me. I suppose it the result of the care in the community program and closing down all the sheltered housing and asylums.

    non optimal

Surely after all the bad experiences people have had with windows, the possibility of a Microsoft designed OS running on Microsoft designed Hardware being "non optimal" crossed their minds?

    Oh, maybe not then.

      Re: non optimal

You seem to suggest that everyone has only had bad experiences with Windows. This is demonstrably not the case otherwise it wouldn't be the desktop of choice (yes, it still is) on the overwhelming majorit of PCs. I've had as many irritations with Linux, Windows and MacOS, not to mention Solaris, AIX and HP-UX over the years, you can't just single out one.

Anyway, these reports suggest that everyone with the Surface Pro 2 has the same problem, this isn't the case, I know someone who has one and he hasn't seen any of these issues.

        Optional

"I know someone who has one and he hasn't seen any of these issues."

So it only affects 50% of the surface 2 pro owners?

Make that 33+% of users. The missus has one that also doesn't have the problem.

Is it really the desktop of choice, or the default desktop (i.e. when no-one is really making a choice)?

It may be "the desktop of choice", but it was Microsoft that chose it, and chose to change it to something else.

If it is actual choice for users then there are several available to chose from: KDE, Gnome, Mate, LXDE, XFCE, ...

Yep, I'm really upset that I have the benefit of a tablet, without the performance hit. That I'm getting more done in less time, and remaining wayyyy more up to date on my tasks because I have the flexibility to take it anywhere (the weight/size advantage over the laptop makes it stick-it-in-your-bag friendly) and so on.

An iPad or whatever might suit you, it certainly doesn't suit me.

What weight/size advantage? It's only marginally smaller and lighter than an 11" MacBook Air. And the MacBook gives you a screen that's 20% bigger, a keyboard suitable for adults, the ability to use it on your lap without it tipping over, and several hours longer battery life.

          Mac Air lacking one thing

The digitizer pen in the Surface allows inking, and Microsoft's OneNote is still miles ahead of EverNote. And with OneNote you can store your notes locally, rather than in someone else's cloud...

Well color me amazed. Next you'll be saying they have some kind of presence in the smartphone industry.

You may need to see a specialist about your memory problem - you do know that you bang on about MS' phone OS really quite a lot. You can check your own posting history, if you don't believe me.

    Some people have short memories

I do have to say I have never had problems with Microsoft mice or keyboards, I wonder who makes them?

KYE Systems Corp., also known as Dongguan Kunying Computer Products Co. Ltd

Not sure why you got a downvote for a simple statement of fact re: Microsoft's previous bits of simple hardware.

I use a microsoft comfort optical mouse, and have no issues at all with it. With the tablet of course it's likely they've cost-cut to the point it's become a problem, but the mouse, no issues at all (never had a Microsoft keyboard, I prefer model Ms :-)

    Feeling left out...

A quick chat around the office and we're feeling somewhat neglected. Not only are our three Surface Pro 2 users all unaffected by the issue reported, they aren't being hounded by either of the iPad owners.

What should we do to get our piece of this action?

We do make the Blackberry user sit in a draught, though.

    Strange.....

I rolled out a number of 64GB Surface Pro 2 devices across an office just before Christmas & not ONE of them was affected by the first firmware issues and I have had no calls since the second firmware was sent out. Possible that only a certain batch of these devices is affected by the firmware probs?
