Who's THAT?

For a year or so now EMC has described its core storage business as “EMC II” (for information infrastructure) and positioned the overarching “EMC” brand as applying to a “federation” of companies including VMware, RSA and Pivotal. Earlier this week, EMC seems to have formalised the existence of the Federation by popping up …
"...it will likely compete with VMware's recently-released VSAN. Direct competition between Federation members will be interesting to watch. And to explain."
Disclaimer, EMC'er here.
This has been something of a trend within the EMC/VMware combined family. Call it product/feature overlap, we saw it with VMware NMP and then the release of Powerpath/VE. Same with VDP followed by the launch of VDP/A (Avamar). Same with vSphere Replication. And now this.
It's a "If you like this, you're going to love this (new feature-rich offering)" approach which seems to work well.
With the Liberty/VSAN overlap it will be interesting to see if and where the 2 products meet and where they branch out on their own...
