back to article Colbert report reveals VMware's AirWatch integration plan

VMware has revealed more detailed integration plans for AirWatch, the mobile device management specialist it acquired for about an-Instagram-and-a-half last January. AirWatch will nestle in the company's end-user computing group, where it looks set to form a part of the sysadmin side of things. Here's how VMware's CTO for end …

    stupid

that vmware continues to try(and fail) to diversify away from it's core competency. If vmware actually spent over a billion on buying this mobile device management company that was a big waste, much better use of that money should go to making their various cloud things (even) better (thus far their higher end management things do not interest me anyway).

Why does EVERY IT corp try to do EVERYTHING!?

    VMWare does virtualization. Quite well.

But they can't stop there, can they? They have to buy and extend and grow until they do a ton of stuff really crappily, including their once core business of virtualization.

And they're not the only ones. Microsoft's OS has suffered by their (mostly failed) attempts to extend into everything. Google's search engine, once proud of their lightweight, simple interface, is now cluttered with more ads for Google services than actual search results. Symantec began life as a seller of simple but functional utilities, and now most of their products are little more than bloatware. And Citrix -- well, they've always been a bit crap ; )

    Why diversify?

Because they need to keep raking in the money at the same rate they've been doing over the last few years. The problem is the hypervisor market is more or less saturated so they can't expect to get any significant growth in that sector (particularly given the rise of capable competitors). They need to add some other strings to their bow if they want to keep their share holders happy.

VMWare caused me to move to VirtualBox

I hate Oracle products with a passion, but I got tired of having to track down kernel patches for VMWare. VirtualBox integrates with DKMS on Debian and Just Works (except for the latest version that *horribly* broke USB sound devices)

What kernel patches VMware needs? First time I hear about those but I only use RHEL and derivatives.

The Colbert Report is usually funnier than this.....

.... I wish they'd do something like "Colbert Report" and "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" in the UK.
