back to article Meet the Flockers... and please, do try to contain yourself

What on Earth is a Flocker? It's a piece of open source software that lets you run databases, key-value stores and queues inside Docker containers, and comes from ClusterHQ. Any wiser? Docker is an open-source Linux container technology that runs multiple apps under a single OS inside a containing structure instead of each …

    The SUN never sets

    > multiple apps under a single OS inside a containing structure

Isn't this what Solaris had about 10 years ago? Containers or zones (I forget - it's been a while)

    > Snarky old IT folks might sarcastically recall multi-tasking under one OS and sniff in sorrow

Yup, pass the snifters. I'll have an Armagnac.

Containers or zones (I forget - it's been a while)

Engineering called them zones, marketing decided to officially call them containers. Customers ignored marketing & used the short name :)

The original zones shared a kernel with the physical host. The latest release of Solaris from a week or too now allows independent kernels in each zone: Kernel Zones.

Zenoss annouced a docker orchestration layer that does data volumes last week

Looks like a lot of solutions are comming out. Zenoss just annouced a container orchestration platform also: http://controlcenter.io && https://github.com/control-center/serviced

It provides data volumes, log monitoring, performance monitoring and high availability

    Appreciate seeing the dots joined...

    Thanks @Chris_Mellor, useful article.

Coming from a Windows background (yes, I blush, but it paid the mortgage) I can't help but draw parallels with ThinApp and AppV, which have proven useful in certain circumstances. I guess the differences between distros on Linux makes containerisation all the more appealing, and the potential use cases broader.

    Coverage from Edinburgh Docker Meetup

Readers might be interested in videos from our first Edinburgh Docker Meetup where industry analyst Paul Miller (http://cloudofdata.com/about/) gave an excellent intro to Docker which was followed by talks on Apache Brooklyn (http://brooklyn.incubator.apache.org/) and two Docker ecosystem Apache licensed projects Clocker (http://clocker.io) and of course Flocker.
