Nicira is probably Cisco's biggest competitive threat, now owned by EMC/VMware... their partner in VCE. VMware's idea is to wrap open SDN, Nicira, into VSphere and commodize networks, the same way they commoditized x86 servers. Cisco isn't going to want to be cozy with the company that aims to take out their network dominance, which is why they just bought an also ran Flash storage provider.
