back to article Arista slaps Cisco with countersuit in network hardware row

Arista Networks has countersued Cisco, accusing the network giant of unfair competition practices. On Monday, Arista submitted paperwork with the US Northern California District Court alleging that Cisco unfairly stifles competition by wielding copyright claims against rivals and coercing customers to only use Cisco hardware …

Welcome to the change of management Arista

Well, Arista, that was Cisco under old management.

Now, welcome to Cisco under new management which seems to be adjusting to its size correction and assuming tactics characteristic for its real (not perceived) size. We will see more and more of that as we go along. Standard issue smoke coming out of engines on a downward trajectory I am afraid.

It's hard to follow your point. Are you saying that Arista are on a downward spiral, or Cisco?

      Cisco is certainly panicing.

It was clear from the way they behaved when they realised they were about to lose a purchase of core networking kit at $orkplace. The best they could offer was FUD - and a last-minute attempt to "match pricing" which upon analysis had a lifetime cost twice the price of the competition (instead of 5 times as much) for kit which wasn't as capable as the competition.

Where Cisco _really_ gouge customers is on anciliaries: 1Gb-SX SFP: $6 generic part, or $125 if it's got a cisco label and EEPROM tag on it, built by the same manufacturer

    Meanwhile...

...as they waste time enriching each other's Lawyers, Huawei eats their lunch. The main competitive advantage the still have is Republican "ChiCom" paranoia in an election year and that's an asset with a limited shelf life.

Cisco may say its a smokescreen, but assuming it has foundations (not looked at the details) then it seems it may be a pretty good screen that may yet cause Cisco's own actions to backfire.

    Revenge

I love seeing Arista giving Cisco a good slapping. While he probably doesn't care and is more involved in bits and bites, Andy B must be smiling a little right now..

Now let me get this straight.

Cisco are trying to sue somebody for the use of a CLI? Well, that's no good since CLIs have existed for a very long time.

Cisco are trying to sue somebody for the use of certain reserved words and command structures? That could be difficult to support if the company or companies prove that the code behind it is original and not of Cisco design.

Cisco are trying to sue somebody because they want to be paid for the use of some thing that they previously gave away freely? Not so easy to defend - the devil's in the paperwork, methinks.

Cisco are trying to sue somebody because they want money and the flawed Merkan legal system could give it to them? Probably closer to the mark...
