back to article Stopped buying Oracle's kit? You've literally decimated its profit

Oracle is talking up soaring sales for its cloudy operations – while the IT giant's profit has taken a big hit over the past 12 months. "We dramatically overachieved again in the cloud," gushed co-CEO Safra Catz in a conference call with analysts, putting her bruised revenue and net income figures aside. "As the business grows …

Net income was $8.9bn, down 10 per cent from last year.

Good use of the word "Decimate" bad use of the word "profit".

        Hmm, net income is profit.

    Oracle says what?

Oracle is where products go to die. That's all.

"If you didn't buy Oracle kit..."

Is Larry having a Ratner moment? When cloud is so great, you have to question a company's commitment to on-prem.

When you look at what companies have done with "appliance" pricing vs pure software, you realise they are quite capable of manipulating their markets to make BYO [hardware] untenable.

When companies keep raising prices, which hides the fact that unit sales are dropping, you eventually reach a point when people stop buying and income falls off a cliff.

Re: "If you didn't buy Oracle kit..."

They are not committed to on-prem.

Moving to cloud allows them to lock-in customers and gauge later (and up-front)! Couple that with increasing lack of transparency around their data models for SaaS software and customers are pushed more and more to their consulting services as external consultants are gradually frozen out.

Existing on-prem customers will be encouraged with one hand to move to cloud, and pushed with the other hand by exorbitant increases in licence fees for on-prem.

Plenty of PHBs will buy-in to the benefits of cloud (and there are some) while the sales droids avoid/deny/ignore the disadvantages of cloud (and there are some).

    so forward thinking

"The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we've redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do. I can't think of anything that isn't cloud computing with all of these announcements. The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?

"We'll make cloud computing announcements. I'm not going to fight this thing. But I don't understand what we would do differently in the light of cloud."

    The Smell of Desperation!

Right, Cloud is doing fantastic, yet every other area is down. Oracle is/was desperate to prevail over Google because they think it will help give them a shot in the arm, but, the whistle blower lawsuit says something entirely different. And when they were found out, what do all evil corporations do, file a Counter lawsuit against the little guy for not playing ball. All they wanted, was for the ex-employee to grossly overstate Cloud sale's. Gee, what's wrong with that?

Yes, there were lots of people who were sad to see Sun Microsystems go, but if Oracle is subsumed, there aren't going to be many tears shed. I don't think that's likely, but that company is about as loveable as...Larry Ellison.

Big Red's net income tumbles despite mighty cloud push

Well, they'd certainly be wealthier if Oracle's senior management would stop funding these ludicrous, vexatious and intrinsically futile law suits.

"We are now growing faster than both Salesforce and Workday in every way," Catz boasted.

This sounds like those absolutely stupid billboards that say "Fastest growing company in such and such a BS field" which tries to insult everyone's intelligence because quite frankly, if you are starting from nothing, of course you're going to be the fastest growing compared to the incumbent you stupid muppet.
