Is Larry having a Ratner moment? When cloud is so great, you have to question a company's commitment to on-prem.
When you look at what companies have done with "appliance" pricing vs pure software, you realise they are quite capable of manipulating their markets to make BYO [hardware] untenable.
When companies keep raising prices, which hides the fact that unit sales are dropping, you eventually reach a point when people stop buying and income falls off a cliff.
They are not committed to on-prem.
Moving to cloud allows them to lock-in customers and gauge later (and up-front)! Couple that with increasing lack of transparency around their data models for SaaS software and customers are pushed more and more to their consulting services as external consultants are gradually frozen out.
Existing on-prem customers will be encouraged with one hand to move to cloud, and pushed with the other hand by exorbitant increases in licence fees for on-prem.
Plenty of PHBs will buy-in to the benefits of cloud (and there are some) while the sales droids avoid/deny/ignore the disadvantages of cloud (and there are some).

Right, Cloud is doing fantastic, yet every other area is down. Oracle is/was desperate to prevail over Google because they think it will help give them a shot in the arm, but, the whistle blower lawsuit says something entirely different. And when they were found out, what do all evil corporations do, file a Counter lawsuit against the little guy for not playing ball. All they wanted, was for the ex-employee to grossly overstate Cloud sale's. Gee, what's wrong with that?

This sounds like those absolutely stupid billboards that say "Fastest growing company in such and such a BS field" which tries to insult everyone's intelligence because quite frankly, if you are starting from nothing, of course you're going to be the fastest growing compared to the incumbent you stupid muppet.
