back to article HP wants HUNDREDS of hapless staffers OUT by April - trade union

Hundreds of British HP workers are being lined up for the chop this quarter with almost a half expected to come from Enterprise Services. Ian Tonks, national officer for IT and comms with trade union Unite, met with HP last week - as did the UK Works Council - to thrash out the latest tranche of local job cuts. He told us: " …

If I could give any advise to HP staff, it would be get out, take the money, never look back!

Doing just that - it's a sinking ship, and I'm fed up with the bureaucracy in any case, so when they're throwing money at me to leave, it was not a hard decision.

    EoW

I used to work for HP in Norwich. Expression of Wishes (EoW) is open there on pretty much a permanent basis. They've been drafting in staff from cheaper areas to do work there for some time now, it's hardly a new thing.

Some new work does come in from other areas, but for how long and what percentage of staff will be needed there long term is anybodies guess. Between 2009 and the present, the trend has been for staff numbers to gradually decrease over time.

They're at the point now where there's barely anyone onshore who fully understands some of the technology.

Glad to be out of there ....

    Joke

Just in time for XP end of life.

It's cheaper to get rid of staff than to upgrade their WinXP workstations.

    bring on the grads...

what is happening in HPES newcastle - is that all the existing staff are slowly being replaced by graduates...we've taken on about 50 in the last 6 months, we've also got a recruitment fair on today for more grads...

maybe getting rid of the dead wood, or cutting costs? but the grads who come in are on 26k...not that many existing staff earn more than that.

lytham st annes is closing down in the next few months too.

Making things better bonuses bigger. Fixed that for you.

In all seriousness, how do managers expect to get rid of that volume of knowledge and experience and expect to remain competitive. Does this not just send out the signal we have no confidence in our firm and its workforce?

    The HP Way We Were

With all the spinoffs and most of the labs gone (looks like IBM is headed that way too), all they "Invent" is new shiny white-box generic products developed and assembled elsewhere.

HP now stands for "Hewlett Packaging"....

Sorry Dave....they don't make them like you and Bill anymore....

As a soon to be booted HP staff member, HP are trying to lower costs by replacing experience with grads. Members of staff with 20+ years of experience replaced by grads by October on complex mainframe benefit systems that have taken years for most to come to grips with, Can't see any flaws in this plan can you? ;-)
