back to article Waiting for your Oculus to arrive? Yeah, it's going to be some time

Early purchasers of the new Oculus are going to have wait to get their hands on it thanks to an unexplained delivery delay. The product's launch last week was timed to coincide with its shipment to customers who have paid $599 for the virtual reality headset. But when a few days later nothing arrived in the mail, users started …

Clearly the stock levels are the same as the content these things put out.

Im personally waiting for the next generation of these before I take the plunge.

Also, does anyone else here think a person using these things looks like Stevie Wonder making a Cameo in Blade Runner?

To save money I'm just going to keep tripping balls on acid. The singing grass and neon air is virtually real. At least to me.

Amen to that. Hundreds of grams of our best technological prowess strapped to the outside of one's head pales in comparison to a couple of hundred millionths of a gram delivered inside.

I think I see the future...

Still on version 1 of homo sapiens sapiens however.

A different species altogether from Lucy and chums.

Or to simplify for the technically minded - Windows 10 is a completely different animal from DOS.

This is really version 3, the initial DK1 was revised into the DK2, which was then revised and made into this CV1. It's the first properly commercial version, but it's not the first version. Developers, and really anyone who wanted one and bought a developer kit, has had access to them for a couple of years to iron out any serious bugs.

    Virtual Reality

Presumably the customers realise that they aren't ever going to get anything as they are buying a virtual product.

I guess that's why delivery charge has come down to zero too.

Suppose the only remaining question - will there be a rift between customer and supplier

Be careful who you let use this

Facebook will know even more about you than they do already

    Do you really want that?

Sure you will look like ... so cool but also a dork but a cool dork.

Exactly how long will it be before children start watching pron with this?

Come on now. How long eh?

anon coz I don't want Facebork to know who I am ever.

      Unlikely.

I mean... it is unlikely that many p0rn production studios have worked out the best position to place the 360 degree camera during filming.

At least when they do, we'll have the answer to the question of how many people are on set watching, during production.

This is EXACTLY the reason people got so Fucking pissed off when facebook purchased oculus.

Well at least somebody has a couple of billion to sit on till they die :( instead of creating and managing THE next big thing in gaming.

    Facebook........

So Facebook bought Oculus but forgot to include their "pound of flesh" on every item they offer. So they are delaying shipments until they can change the firmware to comply with their tracking mandates.

Now ALL YOUR WORLDS BELONG TO SUCKERBERG! (Including the virtual ones)

    Ah, bollocks

"Concern has also been raised about the always-on nature of the headset. The OVRServer_x64.exe function can be used to keep connections with the Facebook server when the headset is not in use..."

I'll bet that this becomes the norm with the Samsung, HTC, Sony, Microsoft, Google, and inevitably, Apple* variants...if and when they arrive. And, as such, I probably won't bother with them, so I'll be condemned to reality, however grim.

When did privacy become a commodity?

    *The original, and best, apparently.

There is nothing wrong with your VR set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your VR set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to – The Facebook Limits.

Is a Facebook account mandatory here?

So do you have to have a Facebook account in order to use the Oculus device at all, or is this just for Facebook content interaction?

    Steve

Re: Is a Facebook account mandatory here?

Currently you need an Oculus account, not a Facebook one.

This may of course change in the future!

    Two thoughts.

    1) Just attach the headset to your dog when you aren't using it. That should make a hash of Facebook's ad-serving and tracking. :)

    2) Supposedly, there have been complaints about long-lasting skin marks and creases, left by wearing the headset. I don't know if that takes long hours of use to appear, but it is being christened "Rift Rash" on the internet.

    Brave new World

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. Make it mandatory for prisoners, preachers and politicians.

    1. Someone_Somewhere

      Re: Brave new World

For any given value of 'you' that is, not directed at redpawn personally, I have nothing to hide, but it's still none of your damn business!

Having said that, I don't aspire to a position of power over others' lives and agree with regard to politicians.

In fact, I think Pratchett was on the right track when he suggested (in 'The Last Continent') that all politicians need locking up:

"We put all our politicians in prison as soon as they're elected. Don't you?"

      "Why?"

      "It saves time."

    The sucker birth rate

It used to be there was one born every minute but there were less people then.

Some people see all this as evidence of how advanced we are others (you know who you are) see it as evidence of something else altogether.

Fortunately I am a totally insignificant organism whose life span relative to the universe is so short it can only be measured by a not as yet invented quantum clock. That's the good news. The bad news is that most of what I have to do in life is incredibly boring. No wonder people want those damn goggles. I guess it beats adopting ideologies, religious conversions, political involvement, various drugs and the host of other things people do to pass the time, maybe.

You look less of a twat when doing drugs.

Even when running round naked, screaming your revelations to the world and then dry humping a Mini, still look less of a tool than with a bugfuck headset on.

Acid doesn't give me motion sickness either :)

        Re: The sucker birth rate

Frankly I'm astounded by how many people's biggest concern isn't price, compatibility, privacy implications or even whether they're interested in one at all - but how would they LOOK LIKE wearing it. The mind - it boggles.

"whether or not people are giving Facebook a window into their brains"

I'm sorry, but there are people who are still asking this question when we have more than a decade of documented Zuckerberg history ?

Some people really have to get up to speed.

Perception is reality. Therefore all reality is virtual anyway.

As to VR gear and the use of it: I'm still waiting to get some of that cybersex hyped in the 1990ies. But them I'm also still waiting for my hoverboard.

    $600???

There are a lot of basic headsets on the market for peanuts that accommodate a smartphone or tablet. (E.g. cardboard)

Can any of them actually be used for anything more than just showing off the manufacturer's own demo content?

    1. DropBear

      Re: $600???

      No.
