back to article AMD to spend $50m cutting costs

There's more bad news for AMD stockholders - $50m (£33.7m) worth of bad news, to be exact. In December of 2008, the company told the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it would incur restructuring costs in the first half of 2009, but that it couldn't then estimate what those costs would be. It will all be better in the end

    When Intel is forced to fork over billions to AMD for violation of anti-trust laws worldwide, life will be much better, in addition to the new products AMD has in the pipeline. I think AMD will get in the last laugh.

    I for one

    welcome our new overlords IBM and Intel!

    All pathetic weaklings like Sun, AMD, HP, Qualcomm, Fujitsu, Samsung, NEC, ARM ltd, plc, co, etc :) must "bow before the ways of heavy metal", or die.

    May we ask...

    "This January, for example, AMD reported that it had lost more than $3bn (£2bn) during 2008 - a sum that makes $50m look like chump change."

    Which particular 'division' of AMD 'lost', or otherwise 'blew off', $3bn in a year and how they managed to do it?

    Saving the wrong companies

    There are three big auto makers in the US, and dozens of foreign competitors. There are only two x86 processor makers in the world. If AMD goes down, Intel is back to being a monopoly. We are saving the wrong companies.

    @Brent

    It's about harvesting votes.

    Besides, ARM processors make a hell of a lot better choice than x86 for most personal computing devices.

    Just 2 competitors?

    How about Power, Cell, Sparc, ARM, VIA, etc. etc.

    AMD will survive, they have to otherwise Intel becomes a monopoly....

    Hi, no mention of AMD shedding its foundries, a big saver. AMD still has technology lead on Intel, they have been first to market with 64bit/32bit which Intel had to start making later. They will have 6 core and 12 core very soon.
