UK jails schizophrenic for refusal to decrypt files

Lozzyho
WTF?

@ the ac's

Funny how it's the anonymous ones here who like to throw around insults to people who have a different point of view, isn't it?

I don't doubt the guy was probably anything other than paranoid or mentally ill, i'm simply saying I don't want encryption to be a way for paedo's and terrorists to evade the law.

If you don't like that opinion that's your prerogative, but to call me an idiot for holding it only shows your own paranoia and ignorance.

Lozzyho
Thumb Up

Hmm

Well if you're so sure he's innocent, answer this: Why the hell didn't he just hand over the keys? Yeah, I'm sure he "forgot" them all, couldn't even hazard a guess.

The authorities had no option. He COULD have been hiding anything, and surely the law CANNOT take refusal as a presumption of innocence. Let's face it, I don't want Al Qaeda suspects doing so either. I don't suppose missing bail hearings, trying to enter countries illegally and having traces of explosive on your hands helped his case either.

C'mon, I dislike Jack Straw and the government as much as the next man. But if it's a choice of protecting the public (especially kids) or protecting those who think they can give two fingers to the law, i know who i'm siding with. If he is innocent, then he's BLOODY arrogant.

Apple wins attack of the clones

> No. Apple don't care if you buy a copy of OS X and install it on your Hackintosh. Just don't

Well that makes perfect sense...

Apple snuffs iPhone app for too much Appleness

Lozzyho
WTF?

This

... is why Apple deserves to fail. It treats its customers and developers like shit, and woe betide any member of the press who dares to criticise it. "That'll be no more review kit for you, then"

Apple are shits with good PR, Microsoft are (comparative) saints with bad PR.

As AC said, MS at least know how to treat their developers with some respect.

I think they're forgetting that Apple has all but cloned the PC in terms of hardware. Oh yeah, apart from the EFI. Big effing deal!

Fanbois howl over data-munching Snow Leopard bug

Lozzyho
Alert

Bit of a flaw

All fanboi-bating and trolling aside, at a more technical level this does seem to be more of a series of design flaws rather than a simple bug.

There should be several layers of code, from the UI to the underlying file system, that would raise an error and prevent the overwrite of a user's home directory. The fact that a single error in the logon code CAN delete a home directory without jumping through several security hoops is more than worrying.

Try to write code in XP or Vista to delete your Documents directory and the OS will immediately and quite rightly tell you to fuck right off.

Apple posts iPhone update

Lozzyho
FAIL

So...

... they control the hardware, the firmware, the OS software and (very tightly) the Application software, and they STILL release firmware that bricks the phone?!

Microsoft, for ALL their flaws (and they do have many), rarely control anything more than the OS software.

But when you control all 4 of the above, it's UNFORGIVEABLE to release such major bugs, especially when your business ethos is to take the piss out of the competition and have advertising based around your supposed superiority and lines like "it just works".

Isn't it amazing how all the anonymous inadequates get very worked up about something that'll never affect them but, somehow, they feel they owe an opinion to the world?

In your own words, grow up and get a life.

Cyclists give TV chef a Wikikicking

Lozzyho
IT Angle

Can't we all just agree to...

Cyclists:

- You SHOULD NEVER ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends (although the highway code says you "SHOULD NOT" on this one, not that you "MUST NOT")

- You MUST NOT ride on pavements

- You MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.

Car drivers:

- Stop driving like twats

- Give cyclists at least a car's width when overtaking. Yes, that means always. Yes, that means you too.

- Stop talking on a mobile phone while you're driving (hands-free notwithstanding)

- You MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.

Celebrity Chefs:

- Just STFU and cook.

And yes, I'm a driver and a cyclist, although the day I wear Lycra is the day Britain gets a roadside vomiting epidemic after catching sight of my substantial moobs.

Oh, and, er, classic cars don't pay any road tax, so does that mean they're not allowed to use the road?

Windows 7 still baking in oven, insists Microsoft

Lozzyho

Nik Peltekakis

Nik, you're wasting your breath, mate. Windows 7 is absolutely fine, has some really nice touches, and I've yet to hear any negative comments from ANYONE who has *actually tried it*.

But of course, the MS haters will obviously want to hate it, and will probably all like to use words and phrases that someone once told them were cool, like FAIL etc.

I'll happily admit that Opera and FF are better browsers, if for not other reason than they comply with standards. And Microsoft deserve a kick up the arse for it. But to stick to this "Windows is shit regardless" nonsense is laughably fanboyish.

And regarding the upgrade path, you can upgrade from RC to RTM as follows:

http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/101865/upgrade-of-windows-7-beta-to-rc-and-rtm-to-require-some-mucking-about.html

Whether you SHOULD is another matter, of course.

@Pierre

Because VFAT was designed my Microsoft and was never released as Open Source. Like it or not, they have a right to protect their patent.

Windows users ambushed by attack on fresh IE flaw

Lozzyho
Alert

@AC

The registry is split into user files (1 per user = HKEY_LOCAL_USER/HKEY_USERS) and machine files (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG etc).

And as for ActiveX objects being enabled by "many many users" then I'd suggest only crazy people would. IE lets you enable such things by zone, so many might enable them for Intranet sites or Trusted sites, but not for Internet. Anyone sufficiently savvy to get that far would SURELY know not to enable ActiveX objects for then Internet zone.

As for installing OSX, does Safari have NO vunlnerabilities?! Are you sure?

Interesting how people still manage to try to slag off Vista when it's the one NOT affected.

Single point of FAIL

This is why having a closed system such as the iPhone is a bad idea, and why basing your own company's entire business model AROUND that closed ecosystem is an even worse idea.

EC will force users to pick a Windows browser, says Microsoft

Lozzyho
Flame

What a crock of EU shite

So tell me, EU tosspots, exactly how many people bought the "N" versions of Windows?

Precisely fuck all, that's how many. The EU are wasting their time (and our money) trying to force users into doing something that 99% of users won't want/need to do.

Us techies who don't like IE (including me) are 1% of computer users, if that, and forcing the rest to choose another browser is acting in the interests of Opera and Mozilla, NOT the users.

Seriously: Will your aunty hilda be able to make an informed decision? You could argue that FF/Opera are better, but I'd argue that others (including Safari) are far worse, especially for a Windows user.

Intel dissing Apple?

Surely not? Does this lover's spat mean no more Intel Mac PC clones or MacBook Airs (which is, after all, an Intel laptop wrapped in toxic Apple materials)?

IMO, Intel are right, but for the wrong reasons. A device can't be the "full" Internet experience until the user is free to run whatever they want on it.

That's most definitely NOT the iPhone.

Paris, because the Internet experience wouldn't be the same without her.

Is Amazon censoring anti-DRM reviews?

Lozzyho
Thumb Up

Good on you, amazon.

I'm no fan of Amazon, and I'm certainly no fan of DRM.

However, looking through reviews of Far Cry 2 yesterday pissed me off no end. Not one of the (several) reviews said anything about the actual game. They all just slated the SecuRom with rants and innaccuracies (such as you can't reinstall the game if you reinstall Windows) etc.

If you're just wanting to read a review (or judge a game to buy from it's star rating!) then such use of the reviews system is a royal pain in the tits. I'd be quite happy from them to remove ALL reviews which did not mention the merits of the actual game.

Jobs is the one who tore up the clone agreements, buying off or bankrupting the clone vendors in the process. They realised the vendors were doing a better job of making Macs than Apple.

It's about time people woke up and realised that Apple is EVEN MORE anti-competitive than Microsoft. They just get away with it by being "trendy" and loved by the sycophantic media.

All I can say is, I hope the government will be happy when there will be no such thing as a flexible workforce.

Sure, some of these people can earn a lot of money, but it's not all a bed of roses. They take the risk that they will be out of work for an indeterminate length of time, and they have to fund their own training and pension. And neither is cheap.

The way the government (HMRC in particular) has constantly moved the goalposts on IR35 (and section 669) is underhand and downright dishonest. Changing interpretation of law is unforgiveable.

If this were benefit claimants having the rules changed on them and backdated, the do-gooders and scroungers would be rioting.

In fact Mr. Brown, why don't you just save us all the hassle of putting up with you for the next 2 years. Just fuck off to Barbados with your index-linked guaranteed pension and paid-for-life personal protection, and give us all peace, will you?

Windows Search and "unnecessary" services

Windows Search is just one of the services that is largely unnecessary for a vast number of users. I can't be the only user who always knows where a document is - it's in "Documents"! My music is in "Music" and so on.

But the Windows Search service isn't the only one that most users should disable. Superfetch is a terrible hard disk thrasher, making your PC less responsive after any change. ReadyBoost is a waste of time, and I could go on.

Vista *AND XP* should have a configuration wizard that asks you a series of questions about the use of the PC, and disables services appropriately.
