BBC Copyright

Being as there was no 'and finally' style self promotion on any of the UK's Pravda outlets concerning this story, we can only presume they were less than pleased with this. They get a tad touchy when there's the mearest hint of copyright infringement...

Fine them

If Joe Public calls 999 without due cause, they would expect to be fined.

We're paying for emergency services; they save lives. If it's too much of a hassle for Google to change this 'easily', then make them pay for wasting Emergency Service time.

Swindon twins with Walt Disney World

Dave Edmondston
Thumb Down

Meh.

It's a fecking advertising ruse that the Disney Corp. have spun. They've asked for a twin town in every major western country. The media have fallen for this and given them oodles of column inches. They don't give monkeys about whether it's Swindon or whatever; they just want publicity. So far they've had millions worth for the cost of a six inch brass effect plaque which will be lined up with countless others in disneyland, and the cost of flying some 15 minute hero and her offspring over for a photo-op.

Copy the GUI?

I'd rather they copied the back-end, based it on freeBSD, and allowed me to compile native UNIX code and run commands like 'ls' and 'grep' natively.

This story is, according to the BBC, only relavant to Englandshire. Any chance of updating the story to reflect this? It's defo not in scope in Scotland...

You know what's next...

...banning everyone who visits 4chan or equiv. Then it's only a small step to bar other 'questionable' web use, such as encripted traffic, human rights sites, organisations apposed to the government, etc, etc.

i.e. this is the first step on a slippery slope.

Dave Edmondston
FAIL

So...

...I hack one of my many neighbours WEP visible wireless networks and they get struck off? ...or I access through a coffee shop WiFi point and they go? It's like banning car hire companies for customers speeding offences.

Intel weans netbook makers off Atom Z

Dave Edmondston

So let's get this straight...

Intel have decided to discontinue production of a successful chip, with no current replacement yet available, because they're scared that people are buying netbooks to use as proper computers rather than dumb email consoles?

London dimwits, not UK

"a King's College London team which quizzed 722 people from the out-patient departments of Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’s hospitals"

Why not go the whole hog and say its a worldwide figure rather than UK? I would expect a survey which claimed the whole of the UK is stupid to take it's sample population from more than one city in one corner of the country.

As an aside to this - why are such data centres still situated in central London? Surely they pay more for land/taxes/staff than elsewhere? Typical London-centric UK...

UK IT should 'fire men first', says Kate Craig-Wood

How about...

Dave Edmondston

Bit sexist

Maybe they should fire women first for having disruptive 'career breaks' and the audacity to live longer and therefore need more pension money. Not my view, but the one using the same logic she's using.

Dixons websites take a little lie down

Dave Edmondston

Hmm...

"Missing even a day's trading online will hurt the firm - it has been one of its few areas of recent growth, up nine per cent in the last half year."

That's because of their roundabout system of working:

Order online to get the web price, then have to collect at the shop as it's not available for delivery.

You can't just turn up at the shop, browse and buy to get the better price.

@Hot Headed

Agree - it's cold here for 9 months of the year (Edinburgh); I'm sure Scotland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Alaska, etc, etc can beat that and provide staff/locations for data centres. Use the world's natural resources where you can. Great things can be done with fibre cable and iLO cards.

Slow news day

Take it there was someone in the BBC who got ripped off? It's hardy deserved the national news coverage it's achieved. If this was an 'attraction' in Leeds, Newcastle or Aberdeen, I bet it wouldn't have featured so much. Surely by now everyone knows the rip-off mentality of the south east of England.

Read my comment properly.

*Shows* I've paid for which I can't watch. All I'm asking is for a chance to see the content. If the platform takes hold on the BBC, I'm hardly likely to be able to view content any other way. They'll plug it like fcuk as the do with every other BBC money maker.

Reding would OK charges to receive mobile calls

Dave Edmondston

Meh

The mobile companies will make an attractive offer till people get used to the idea of incoming charges. They'll probably offer double minutes for the first year or so, the start cutting them again. People will not get rid of their phones or stop using them, because that's how culture is now. The mobile market is one big cartel with no real competition.

"Sounds like a very poor excuse to shut off a non-profit part of your business, i wouldn't have expected less from Time Warner"

I Agree - surely the best way to monitor users of these groups is exactly that - keep the groups somewhere public. All this will do is force users underground; it'll be a far harder job to police sites that now spring up that are 'invitation only' requiring authentication keys.
