RIP - Special Agent Aladdin

"....made doubly onerous by the circling presence of my mutt pack, who sensed the biggest nosh-up since they downed a small wild boar a couple of years back...."

They were probably thinking "Vale! Burritos!"

Damn good thing they didn't scoff him! I can see the local rag making allusions to "perro-nitis"!

A final thought, why was Aladdin not cremated and his ashes scheduled for "Scotty-type" disposal on one of Mr Musk's next orbital perambulations?

Headline: "Dragon torches Donkey"?

This would have made him the first El Reg operative to have made it to the heavens!

Great Opportunity Missed

Salve!

Looks like the ancient forebears of Michaelis O'Learius missed a great opportunity to develop low cost travel options!

Imagine Roma (Ravenna) to Londinium (Burrio) - 1 denarii !

I can see it now 5000 seater galleys painted yellow and blue, powered by the paying passengers and the odd shot of "le potion magique!" ! However, only one (paid) toilet visit en route!

Not sure about Carry on Majorca?

More like "Carry on up the Costas"!

I've felt sad for several years, now that the lads have passed on!

In the Western part of Andalucia, there is a perfect set for a "Carry-On" package holiday type caper using the following towns all to be found within 160 km of Seville:

"Moron de la Frontera"

"Carrion"

and (drum roll - wait for it...)

"El Rompido"

Forget the Hype - Debian 6 with Gnome 2

Sitting here happily on Debian 6 with Gnome 2 building a web site!

Unity/Gnomes...Ugh!

I was at the start of a website build project when the Ubuntu 11.04 update arrived.

I have been an Ubuntu devotee since 2004 and was a real fan!!.

So in early June I decide to upgrade to 11.04, despite thoughts I shouldn't, based on the comments flying around the Interweb!

BIG BIG Mistake! I suddenly found that certain essential plugins in Gimp would not work under the Unity UI.

That was enough of a boo-boo for me.

I had to reinstall my machine so I regressed/slid over to Debian 6.0.

At least, I have much more flexibility to choose my UI and avoid MS Widnows-type evolution of Ubuntu where Canonical are telling me what's good for me!

Don't fix what works....!!!!

Give the user a choice of GUI , IN BIG CAPITAL LETTERS, during the initial phases of installation!

Luckily I have enough TUX experience to customise Debian to my one requirements!

The only way Canonical will get me back is an all-expenses paid return trip to the ISS to celebrate the Shuttleworth visit.... (must be 8 years or so now!) on a Canonical-funded SpaceX Dragon Capsule! (not Soyuz...Roskosmos, after years of great service in the ballistic human field, seem to be going the way of Ubuntu!)

Hologram communication

Sorry to spoil the party but tomogram 3D communication, as against hologram, has already been demonstrated using live feeds beaming pseudo holograms into studios!

CNN used the technology provided by an Israeli co. to beam live representations of one of their reporters, Jessica Yellin and Will.I.am of Black Eye Peas fame from the Obama Victory Party in Chicago to their studios.

MS/Skype

I really am concerned at this news.

It took long enough to get Skype to produce an effective Linux Client.

I can just see the "evil empire" keeping the existing Linux client and then as the product develops easing the linux version out because "it is no longer compatible.".

I can also see the "evil empire" also trying to turn itself into the "world's" phone network. Free Computer to Computer Calls will go!

With Google dominating search, Facebook social media and Microsoft voice communications, the world Interweb really is becoming dominated by a small cartel of US controlled IT companies.

We really do need companies like Amazon.com, baidu.com, yahoo japan etc. to start fighting back internationally and offer competitive products.

Steve,

Sorry! Been done before or actually something very similiar and over 50 years ago.

Read the relevant parts of the 1957 Goon Show Episode "The Great Regent's Park Swim".

"Grytpype-Thynne:

Well, I've just invented the word "Help" for people who are drowning."

Later in the show.....

"Moriarty:

Aaagh! (etc)

Grytpype-Thynne:

Steady, Moriarty.

Moriarty:

(more sounds of agony)

Grytpype-Thynne:

Steady, Moriarty. You know that I charge one thousand pounds for using

my invention, namely, the word "Help".

Moriarty:

(sounds of agony, interspersed with growls)

Seagoon:

What a bit of luck, folks. Whilst the Bengal tiger was fighting Moriarty, I ........."

and even later in the show.....

"Grytpype:

... and I warn you, nobody shout "Help". That is a word I've just invented and will cost anybody five hundred pounds to use. Now, give me that green liquid. Right, Neddie, into the canal.

Seagoon:

But I can't swim without that green liquid. Aarrggh

Seagoon:

But look here, I ...

Out you come, Neddie. To using the word "Help", another five hundred pounds

Hypocrisy

If I remember correctly, it was some lunatic Congressman or Senator who dreamt up the scheme for charging for the visa waivers to avoid adding to the US Deficit. To subsequently use such funds for promoting inward Tourism to the US is hypocritical in the extreme!

Why cannot the US Congress be honest with the entire US Tourism Industry?

Guys, you are just going to have to get by on domestic tourism! Forget marketing overseas...we really do not want any "aliens" coming to the US whether from "friendly" or "not so friendly" countries. They are ALL a risk!

By the way, while we are about it, you large US Air Carriers with international routes better reduce your frequencies!!!! There's going to be little growth on international routes for the next few years.

The additional staff laid-off and increasing unemployment numbers - tough!

No wonder Disney, Wynns Casinos et al are opening up theme parks outside the US. The decrease in "alien" tourism will leave little room for growth in coming years!

Not only has the US succeeded in destroying any sympathy and support it had among a bulk of the world's nations, it is now succeeding in ruining what little sympathy it has left in so-called allied and friendly countries.

Pretty good for a guy from Pretoria High!

Well done Elon Musk,

It is amazing that South Africa has produced two very successful entrepreneurs who have succeeded in breaking the mold in space and in open source software.

What Musk and Shuttleworth have managed to do, nothing short of taking on the establishment, is breaking the mold in their respective fields because they believed they could do and were not afraid to try. It is interesting that neither hail from countries of the "old world".

NASA has done so much but it must get back to r & d and the difficult things. Routine missions to orbit and even the moon must be commercialised.

I was stunned by the efficiency of the launch which I watched live via the excellent quality webcast. It was better than NASA and the down-view video link continued in high quality colour until the craft reached orbit and flew out of range. It was also interesting that after the first launch abort, the team were able to clear the glitch within 90 minutes and launch successfully. Has Nasa ever done this?

I would love for El Reg to promote and organise the first journalist in space and El Reg reader to the ISS or round the moon mission, when the Dragon capsule is ready. El Reg could make a mint on video transmission rights alone....

What's good for the goose....

I seem to recall not so a few years ago that the US was prosecuting the US subsidiaries of EU Companies because the parent EU companies were, quite legally under EU law, trading with Cuba.

The US Congress needs to realise that it is no longer the only 100 tonne gorilla on the block. Economically, in this global world, its main creditor China, and one of its main trading partners, the EU are equal or bigger on certain standards than the US.

The US will just have to wait!!!! The days of elected representatives (many of whom have never travelled outside their nation) of a small percentage of the World's population located East of Shanghai and Tokyo and West of Shannon intimidating all and sundry and passing legislation which impacts 3rd parties who have no recourse are fast coming to an end.

Home Office shifts feet as vetting database looms

The other point no one yet seems to have picked up on is that with unemployment up at high levels and not possibly due to come down for years, those who chose not to be vetted or those on the list who might just be naughty boys and girls with a few dirty photos, will find yet another block on the road to finding employment. The result either the taxpayer will have to pick the price for supporting them on the dole because they can't get a job, or pick up the price for keeping them in jail, when they go off the edge because they can't get a job!! Up go taxes to pay for the database and these support costs..

The general public needs to get real. Life is harsh at times. Things happen. The state can't protect us from everything. We can and must to our best within reason to protect the young and elderly. However, the creation of yet another monstrous bureaucracy is off the planet.

The ongoing and increasing knee-jerk populist reaction by politicians to the baying hounds of the western media and lobby groups is frightening.

The solution is definitely unpolitically correct, but would work. Bring back hard labour and the death penalty for the most heinous of these type of crimes...(Sod the EU treaties on this.) Bring back profiling! The solution is more real policing on the beat and in the community, not vast Big Brother databases administered by faceless bureaucrats who, as as fast as you can say cd, will leave a usb stick with the entire database lying around on some train or bus.

It is not just in the UK this is happening. The case of the Italian father arrested in Brazil for kissing his own daughter while on the beach in the presence of the mother is unreal.

As a ageing single hetero-male who has never had kids and probably now will not, I can tell you that if I was in my 20's or 30's today, I'd say sod marriage, sod volunteering my time to help youth, leave me alone with my PC or my dog, and probably ostracise any friends who had kids younger than 18. An increasing number of men are thinking this way, and the implications in 10 years or so time of a sizeable unattached male minority in society reacting against political correctness is something neither politicians nor bureaucrats are capable of imagining or thinking about.

Entry to Spain

TimBiller is right.

However, the Guarda in Spain do not generally treat all and sundry as criminals/aliens in arrival. A cursory look/swipe of the passport and away you go.

The problem with the US, even prior to this latest Big Brother control, has been the fact that all foreigners flying into US Airports have over, the past 20 years (yes, even before 9/11 ),generally been treated on the basis of "guilty until proven innocent". As the US is supposed to be the "land of the free", treatment of one's fellow humans in such a manner is galling!

I reckon that even the real Aliens at Area 51 get better treatment....probably because they would phaser large parts of the US into oblivion before one could say "Fire photon torpedoes!"

The fact is that the manner of implemention of the increasing level of immigration security in the US in such a crass way, the US has succeeded in pissing off a large part of the planet. True, the DHS did bring Disney in to provide training for the Immigration Control staff, but I reckon Goofy, Daffy and Mickey would do a better job.

Trouble is if MS were to introduce a "Vista Waiver" programme they would want all our personal details first as well....

oh well, it was an idea while it lasted.....!

Chris Hawkins
Linux

They just don't get it!

At the time of 9/11 the US had the sympathy of the world. In 7 years they have, by showing how grossly they don't understand the world, managed to alienate the bulk of the planet, but when you meet the average Merkan they don't get it.

They are imposing increasingly restricted travel restrictions on friendly nations, while their own frontier with Mexico and Canada remains as porous as ever and given its length will never be totally secure.

The time has come for the rest of the world to treat US citizens as aliens, including special desks at Immigration just for US citizens and staffed by the most obnoxious border agents in each country's Immigration dept.

In case the US hasn't noticed, it is no longer the Hyperpower it was. China, India, Russia, the EU and Brazil are all doing fine as economic and political powers. IT giants such as Microsoft & Co can no longer get the top foreign brains because these prefer to stay at home rather that endure the humiliation of the US Border control system.

My partner and I are another couple who will never be travelling stateside again either directly or in transit.

Mine's the Free Finnish OS with a VIA Taiwanese Processor please!

MARTIAN AIR FORCE ONCE AGAIN DENIES STORIES OF UFO LANDING

General Rgrmrmy The Lesser, KGM12 , (Knight Garter of Majestic 12) recently appointed Joint Chief of Staff of the Mars Armed Forces, telepathically empathically denied the reported landing in the polar regions an alien spaceprobe from Earth during the past 24 hours.

Recalling the famous alleged supposed incident at the Ares Vallis Air Force Base many years ago, no proof was ever found any such landing.

The General continued, that over the past decade, substantial advances have been made in planetary defence and in the event of any alien craft attempting such a landing, there would be a Mars-shattering Kaboom that would be telepathically audible and visible to all!

As there was no such Kaboom there was no threat!

In a separate development, ACME Labs announced today the retirement of long time military advisor to the Kaboom programme, Col. (Retd.) Marvin T. At the age of 1000, it was common knowledge at ACME, that Col. Marvin was increasingly showing disturbing signs of overwork and old age, apparently wandering the corridors of the the labs muttering verbally, "There are Bugs in it!" and "Where's the Kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering Kaboom!"

La siesta de Lester

El Google habla muy bien el Espanol! El Lester Tambien!

Seriously, I have been using Babelfish & Google Translate for over a year now to do prelim translations into French and Spanish for web-site content. As I speak and read these to languages pretty well, I am able to correct the results quite easily. Not perfect but enough to be comprehensible and generate business.

Another trick to getting better results when machine translating from english to these languages, is to write the english version as it would be written if literally translated into the other languages. e.g. don't use apostrophes etc.

For example, using googletranslate from english to spanish, a coloquial english phase:

>> Lester's Siesta translates as Lester's Siesta

while

>> The Siesta of Lester translates more correctly in Spanish as "La siesta de Lester"

End of Flights to the US

If you follow the financial markets at present many countries including China are shifting their financial assets out of dollars, hence the weakening currency. The number of tourists visiting the US has dropped, and more and more people I know, now say they will avoid travelling to or transiting the US as it is to much of a hassle. The US economy is going from bad to worse.

The time really has come to move agencies like the UN out of the US to somewhere like Geneva, and stop all flights to the US. Let people fly to Canada and then, if they want to, cross the frontier by road or train. (Although I suspect there will be a "no-train" policy implemented there soon as well.) This would also put an end to biased bilateral flight arrangements between the UK, Europe and the US which always end up in the favour of the US and ease congestion at Heathrow. (It might also put BA out of business but what the heck, Ryanair will take its place!)

As regards internal US flights, the ending of all flights with alien foreigners (funny never considered myself to be form another planet!) to the US, should release enough capacity at US airports to ease their internal air traffic control system and allow for vetting of each individual flying. If passengers need to go to Hawai, use a Hawaii Five O longboat from California, and Alaska, husky sled.

On an IT angle it would give a boost to Lenovo and the Chinese IT industry's future efforts to dominate the world.

Finally, it would also reduce international sightings of PH. ;)
