Just what...

I was thinking as I read the article. The first thing I'd do is drop WP7. If HTC and LG drop their WP7 handsets too that leaves MIcrosoft depending on Nokia, and no handsets until Nokia eventually deliver their first. See how Microsoft like them apples!!

Pandaing

Pandaing is the process of influencing management decisions made by managers who can;t make decisions unless a Panda is on their desk. We have that problem where I work and it's a real ball-ache. Panda's are getting really difficult to get hold of these days.

Oracle and OOo

Why do I get the feeling that Oracle will do for Open Office what Novell did for Word Perfect? I certainly hope not, for while Open Office aint as good as it could be, it still shows the potential to be a competitor to office, if not the only one.

Phantom Wibbler
Stop

Because...

Perhaps for business users, but since most local and central government employees still use IE6, they should at least be telling agencies to upgrade to IE8.

Another one for Vulture

My first thought was USS Twatdangler, but think it should deffinitley be called Vulture 1.

I suppose you could call the balloon twatdangler. (On second thoughts don't. Every time I hear the word twat, I think of David Cameron!! - call the balloon Paris)

Phantom Wibbler
WTF?

old! news!

I've had to put up with crappy page for the last few weeks already. Having said that, I'm getting used to it and it isn;t too bad once you get rid of the links to ebay, facebook and t@tter.

incremental?

It was also at pains to point out that Windows 7 was "an incremental release".

I thought it was an excremental release!!

Mines the one with XP in the pocket.

Phantom Wibbler
FAIL

not just uk gov

I'm with a local authority. Last year I asked if there were any plans afoot to upgrade to IE7, and the response I recieved was, there are no plans.

I'm sure there's a best practice reason - they always churn out one of those when they want to fight a logical and sensible decision.

Cuil = not very cuil

Done a couple of searches and the results are, shall we say, very poor. Crap really. couldn't give me any results. Google on the other hand gave me just what I needed. Guess I'll stick with Google for the mo!

@ Matt

continuity for the kids :) if all the desktop PC's run XP and all thier home PC's run XP its a bit of a culture shock to be confronted with another OS

Utter Bollocks.

My kids use Macs at school. The family PC at home uses XP and I just picked up a laptop that runs Ubuntu. The kids just log onto a computer and figure it out, no matter what the O/S. (Given the choice at home, they'll use the Ubuntu laptop. Tux Paint is miles better than MS Paint.)

@Steven Jones

Would hate to dissapoint!

Phantom Wibbler

by way of comparison...

Windows updated nicely this week, killing my PC's internet connection stone dead with two seperate security updates. I've heard of a couple of people suffering the same fate.

The laptop running Ubuntu updated with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks Micro$haft. You drive me further into Linux Land with every passing day. I owe you one.

Phantom Wibbler

the memories

Reminds me of better times, when I used Windows as a novelty rather than because I had too.

Phantom Wibbler

Why...

...can't they leave alone. Flickr has a good rep with it's users and the photographic community, and let's face it YouTube is just full of utter sh#t. Why would Yahoo! WANT to add video and trash Flickr's reputation in one easy move?

Note to Yahoo!: You don't need to be like Google!

Thursday will never be the same

I haven't laughed so hard in all my life. What a way to start Thursday. Cheers El Reg. Just what we need.

Paris, because it's bleedin obvious.

Absolutely. Say it loud, say it proud.

How sad

“Whitehall is arguably Britain’s most important knowledge factory,”

What a sad indictment of this once great nation!!

Utter bollocks too.

Phantom Wibbler

Just one thing to say...

Drop Freetard. It's beyond childish, even for the Reg.

Phantom Wibbler

oh well

Speaking as one who works in the children's services arena, I was hoping Deloitte would kill Contact Point. The concept is good and beneficial, but I fear the execution will lead to a major disaster.

Of course that's supposing Deliotte were totally impartial!

My Twopence

Just had to re-install windows XP on my desktop the other week, took me the bext part of a couple of days before the last security update was installed. Also decided that this was a good opportunity to try that Ubuntu thing. Installed and updated in less than two hours. Pretty impressed really.

Not sure about the silly naming thing, though I reckon the whole thing is a bit of a lark (or is that lusty lark?) for those who have a sense of humour installed. They should be applauded for offering a good, free operating system with silly names.

Leadership

If you improve the quality and leadership in the department it benefits everyone

Can't argue with that. However, pissing 1.4 million down the drains like this shows how absolutley bereft of leadership they are.

Can we have a recolution please?

Phantom Wibbler

Really!

Not so much like lying in mid-air, but lying on a bed of acrylic. I guess comfort comes as an optional extra!

Still kinda cool though!

Phantom Wibbler

Fact!

That individuals studying sociology are overly represented in the community of morons.

This is a shitty idea.

@ mad clarinet

...some of the people I have to deal with shouldn't be let anywhere near a computer.

Same here. It's frightening really what some people clearly don't understand. Even more frightening are those who have no understanding, but think they are experts. Those kind of people are truly dangerous.

The Problem with Yahoo!

...is that it's crap.

It's trying to be too many things to too many people. They need to concentrate on what they are good at, though I'm not sure what that is anymore.

Yahoo mail used to be pretty good, but the new mail is way too slow. (I'm dreading the day that the old mail interface is culled.)

Oh Well!!!!!!!

@Colin Millar

"Given that the government is insisting on a PC in every home could they not just insist that as part of that deal all the kids must open an arsebook account and invite their teachers to be their bestest friend and allow them to post videos on their pages for viewing by the whole world - add barcodes to their foreheads and when the camera is pointed at them it will automatically send the feed to the right account"

I give you e-ilp.

Where's the traffic cone icon?

Capgemini?

Surprised Capgemini aren't on the list. ContactPoint has been delayed, yet again, and developers can't begin integrating systems with it because Capgemini haven't released the specs yet, or so the story goes. I also notice that one of their other public sector clients is HMRC! Hmmmm.

good oh..

I've mentioned this kind of approach in IT circles at a couple of Local authorities. You just get met with stoney silence - which is better than having stones lobbed at you I suppose!

So much money is wasted on MS products in government. Money that could be used to deliver better services. It's a no brainer really.

Maggie Gee...

...has nicely demonstrated how many authors are so far up their own backsides that they think regular people cannot possibly pass judgement on their written works. A panel full of 'serious authors' is surely a bit like pigs wallowing in their own filth?

PS: Where's the Paris angle?

Phantom Wibbler
Paris Hilton

WTF???

Do the people who issued the cyber asbo not realise how stupid this sounds?

How long before some pillock in government thinks up the e-asbo system and hands over a huge wodge of cash to Capita for another big database?

And where's the Paris Hilton angle?

I think that this should rank as perhaps the most significant IT contribution of 2007.

And tonight, I shall be mostly travelling home at an average speed of 0.0004% of the maximum velocity of a sheep in a vacuum.

@Anonymous

I work for a local authority. Apparently we have a data protection guru (official title - Data Protection Expert!) who advises on all aspects of information security and data protection.

Nobody knows who they are.

That's some guru!!

@Think of the Children

ARCH don't always get it right. Some of the conclusions they draw are a little over the top and melodramatic, but it doesn't take away the fact that fingerprinting four year olds to register or buy lunch or borrow a library book is wrong. (and a little sinister if you ask me!!)

What the reporter failed to mention in his article is that government advice on fingerprinting is that schools should consult with parents before implementing systems. The reality is that parents have rarely been consulted.
