I was thinking as I read the article. The first thing I'd do is drop WP7. If HTC and LG drop their WP7 handsets too that leaves MIcrosoft depending on Nokia, and no handsets until Nokia eventually deliver their first. See how Microsoft like them apples!!
Pandaing is the process of influencing management decisions made by managers who can;t make decisions unless a Panda is on their desk. We have that problem where I work and it's a real ball-ache. Panda's are getting really difficult to get hold of these days.
Why do I get the feeling that Oracle will do for Open Office what Novell did for Word Perfect? I certainly hope not, for while Open Office aint as good as it could be, it still shows the potential to be a competitor to office, if not the only one.
Perhaps for business users, but since most local and central government employees still use IE6, they should at least be telling agencies to upgrade to IE8.

I've had to put up with crappy page for the last few weeks already. Having said that, I'm getting used to it and it isn;t too bad once you get rid of the links to ebay, facebook and t@tter.

I'm with a local authority. Last year I asked if there were any plans afoot to upgrade to IE7, and the response I recieved was, there are no plans.
I'm sure there's a best practice reason - they always churn out one of those when they want to fight a logical and sensible decision.
Done a couple of searches and the results are, shall we say, very poor. Crap really. couldn't give me any results. Google on the other hand gave me just what I needed. Guess I'll stick with Google for the mo!
continuity for the kids :) if all the desktop PC's run XP and all thier home PC's run XP its a bit of a culture shock to be confronted with another OS

My kids use Macs at school. The family PC at home uses XP and I just picked up a laptop that runs Ubuntu. The kids just log onto a computer and figure it out, no matter what the O/S. (Given the choice at home, they'll use the Ubuntu laptop. Tux Paint is miles better than MS Paint.)

Windows updated nicely this week, killing my PC's internet connection stone dead with two seperate security updates. I've heard of a couple of people suffering the same fate.
The laptop running Ubuntu updated with no problems whatsoever.

Speaking as one who works in the children's services arena, I was hoping Deloitte would kill Contact Point. The concept is good and beneficial, but I fear the execution will lead to a major disaster.

Just had to re-install windows XP on my desktop the other week, took me the bext part of a couple of days before the last security update was installed. Also decided that this was a good opportunity to try that Ubuntu thing. Installed and updated in less than two hours. Pretty impressed really.
Not sure about the silly naming thing, though I reckon the whole thing is a bit of a lark (or is that lusty lark?) for those who have a sense of humour installed. They should be applauded for offering a good, free operating system with silly names.

I work for a local authority. Apparently we have a data protection guru (official title - Data Protection Expert!) who advises on all aspects of information security and data protection.
Nobody knows who they are.

ARCH don't always get it right. Some of the conclusions they draw are a little over the top and melodramatic, but it doesn't take away the fact that fingerprinting four year olds to register or buy lunch or borrow a library book is wrong. (and a little sinister if you ask me!!)
What the reporter failed to mention in his article is that government advice on fingerprinting is that schools should consult with parents before implementing systems. The reality is that parents have rarely been consulted.
