iPhone 3G S in the UK: what you need to know

Gordon

@miss a trick

will be interesting to see what the italian/french/belgium sim unlocked 3gs prices are like on ebay. typically the factory unlocked 3g's were between 450 and 600 from the non rip off merchants.

however given that apple (illegally i suspect) dont offer a pan eu warrantee its a risky business

Um...Macbook Air is wintel

Isnt someone missing the point here?

Apple have very privledged relationship with intel - to the point at which they are early launching Intel products or getting their own versions made for them.

How does the new platform pose a threat to the MBA? Nothing is stopping a current manufacturer making a copy now.

Presumably Apple if they so wish will be able leverage the new platform before most of their competitors.

Sam C - Trusting the Police

Dont blame the police - blame the real culprits.

I think its a little unfair to tar all the rozzers with the same brush. In any organisation there are people who will exceed their limits, whether its battering a protester or nicking an MP on a politically dubious charge.

Saying you dont trust the Police as an organisation is harsh. Its should be expected that the police try to push the boundaries - infact its healthly that they do so. Criminals arent known for staying inside those boundaries.

Where there has been a massive failure is among the people who are MEANT to restrain the police and dictate their limits - namely the current government - who have gone out of their way in the last 8 years to suggest any conduct is acceptable if its to defend the state from harm. The harm of course being anything the current Govt decides it is.

3rd the runcore comments

It baffles me why crucial would release such a crap product 3-4 later than the runcores have been available

For Dell Mini 9

Crucial 64gb 40 Mb/s Read 15 Mb/s Write - Approx £140

Runcore 64Gb 78 Mb/s Read 44 Mb/s Write - Approx £190

Double - triple the performance for 50 quid more is a no brainer. If you cant afford the 64Gb run core the 32GB is only £100-ish

Android WTF?

Seriously why was it even mentioned in the same breath as winmo and iphoneOs. It's completely unproven. It will be many years if ever before it can boast a userbase close to either.

Atom Bashing getting old

The Reg's atom bashing is getting very old very quickly.

Ok it is a downgrade for the Mini, but how many people are stretching the mini anyway?

OS X runs happily on Atom - as all the people out there running it on their netbooks will attest, the graphics are the weak point (although even the netbooks can run Quartz Extreme). The ION components will sort any lack in the graphics department.

Indirect Fire

Of course the big advantage projectives have over Lasers is that they can lob shots over obstacles and horizons.

Not a major issue for Bradleys and the like but surely a disadvantage of a laser mounted on a n M1A1 compared to a conventional M1A1.

I presume tank still provide indirect fire on occasions? F

SSD FTW

I think some of this is down to the relatively small size of SSD's in the current gen. When 20-32gb drives are available for a price that makes sense for a netbook.

Personally mines an 7-8" screen with SSD - but Im OS agnostic.

Speed cams ditched in Wiltshire

@Morons

Hey AC never let the facts get in the way of a good rant eh?

Quoted from bbc.co.uk on the same story

"The Department for Transport annual results - published on the 25th of September - show that, nationally, only 6% of accidents are caused by people breaking speed limits and yet almost 100% of the government's road safety money is being invested in speed cameras,"

Now if only they remove the mobile cameras who park over the M4 bridges we'd be in clover.

How come 2 hrs works in Ireland?

I've not heard of slamming being a major issue in Ireland, where I ported 2 or 3 times over a period of years within the 2 hr limit.

I certainly never heard of anyone being slammed either.

Sounds like Vodafone is blowing the issue out of all proportion. The solution is fairly simple too - make the punishment for slamming so stringent that no retailer would dare do it. If all the networks had a slamming punishment clause in their retailer contracts there would be no issue.
