Alpha fine, Beta broken

In Nerd alert: First Lucid Lynx Ubuntu beta fun

Headmaster

I have had Alpha 3 on my netbook for a couple of weeks, with very few problems.

The latest Beta updates came down this morning, and now:

the panel does not load

evolution mail has disappeared off the menus (had to put it back myself)

no access to the file manager

Thought this sort of problem was supposed to ironed out by a Beta release

Stop knocking the BBC, please

In Tories ask: Why BBC3, BBC4?

Headmaster

Whatever you might think of some of the programs, the BBC does NOT have adverts. If we loose it, we will get even more adverts on the other channels. Look at the obvious breaks in US TV programs, sometime just after the titles.

Remember, quality TV means that you will love some of it and hate some of it. Poor TV just panders to the lowest common denominator

strange windows updae

In MS update gives some XP boxes the Blue Screen

Headmaster

Windows update has just installed Office 2007 SP1 and SP2 on my PC, and tried to install the Office Genuine Advantage bits as well (this failed)

I find this odd as I do not have any version of Office installed, and have not had it installed since my last format and re-install.

I have had to tell update to ignore this update in future, but the update web page still reminds me I have said to ignore it.

Anyone else had a similar problem with recent updates?

acer aspire one

In Early adopters bloodied by Ubuntu's Karmic Koala

Headmaster

installed on my aspire one (ssd hard disk 512k) no problems, no messing with terminal (unlike Jaunty). very reliable

installation CD will not boot on my desktop (Sempron based) moans about USB devices.

love it on the acer, sees windows network, works on the school network (including picking up their printers) never had to use terminal yet.

must have put alot of work into the netbooks and forgot the rest

Moan moan moan

In Ubuntu's Karmic Koala bares fangs at Windows 7

Linux

Why do all the moaners come out every time something new comes out?

I've been running 9.10 for about 3 weeks (beta version) on am Acer Aspire One 8Gig solid state hard disk.

Much better than the supplied Linux and 9.04.

Free

Not as good as windows (will not use my scanner) but much much cheaper.

If you don't like it, PAY for something better

In MS opens up Security Essentials downloads from today

Headmaster

Anyone else have the problem that it apparently needs 1gig of RAM to run on XP? That's quite a lot for an XP machine. Why does an AV program need so much and why does the review says its a low impact when it need that much.

Has anyone run it on 512K? Are MS just assuming everyone has 1gig?

Win 7

In Behind Microsoft's IE-free, Windows-for-Europe ploy

Thumb Down

correct me if I am but both Linux and OSX come with browsers already installed in the setup.

MS have already (in Vista) removed update from IE.

Are the EU going to start on Apple and the variety of Linux distrubutions next, or is this another pick on MS and ignore everyone else who behaves just as badly?

Beta software

In Windows 7 UAC shutoff 'bug' leaves Microsoft unmoved

Don't you release beta software in order to find the faults? Install at your own risk? So what is wrong with a "gaping hole" in the security? Better now that on a full release.

DIDA formats

In Entire class fails IT exam by submitting in Word format

Happy

the reasoning behind the format limits is that ALL the work is submitted online, as an e-portfolio, basically a web site. ALL formats must be readable on the internet for free. There is not a free reader for Word format. Acceptable formats are PDF, Excel, Powerpoint and HTML. all of which can be read, for free, in an Internet Browser.

All this is clearly explained on the course description that the students and teachers use.

Security fix on an Apple????

In Apple releases bumper patch batch

I thought Apples didn't need security fixes because they were secure by design! Surely some mistake.

Same old story

In Five misunderstood Vista features

IT Angle

"Vista can be dramatically slower than XP, often thanks to poor configuration by OEMs."

So, people selling computers cannot be bothered setting them up properly, and, as usual, Microsoft get the blame.

If you new car arrived, and the dealer had put the wrong fuel in it, would you complain about Ford or the dealer?

Microsoft has alot wrong with it, but most OEMs and software houses get away with murder because they know Microsoft will get the blame.

Be fair.

XP vs Vista

In Counterfeit Vista rate half that of XP

I notice the comments all knock Vista (again)

Is it only me that remembers the comments about XP when it first came out. Incredibly high hardware requirments, nothing ran on it, no device drivers, etc, etc. Sound familiar?

It all settled down when the software/hardware manufacturers caught up and now everyone loves XP.
