Samsung shows off battery tech it says will see you gone in nine minutes

I still fancy the flow battery idea...

2 tanks, 2 pumps, one membrane, drive into the BP leccy station, purge the tanks, fill up with freshly charged water and go.

Existing infrastructure, existing tax regime, no cabling to nick, no battery to explode etc etc.

Here in Catalunya

A Chinese company took over the old Nissan factory near Barcelona last week. Much handshaking, chuffed government types etc etc but when the Chinese bunch announced they'll be building 150,000 EVs a year by the end of this year you could feel the "omg, they dont hang about" atmosphere and people choking on their cornflakes.

I'm in the "UK" this week and King Charles' "Operation Bunting" to bring the "nation" together post Brexit is in full flow.

I've just got to hold out until Sunday to get back to civilisation... Aka the EU.

Armageddon here we come!

IMHO... Oar in time. Israel wants more land and will blow the fuck out of anything to get it. I'm not denying that Hamas kicked this off, but Israel is now maxing the opportunity.

The UN is now as useless as the previous version of it and is stuck in some sort of 1950s limbo. It is now 2 tier where the views of the "big boys" supersede the views of most of the rest of the planet.

The whole "Nazi" thing if I remember my history correctly started off with sticking Jews in ghettos and then ended up with a final solution using genocide by gas chamber... and here we have Palestinians put in ghettos and the final solution this time is genocide by any means available.

It's all depressingly familiar and will probably end up with a large radiation zone between the med and India, so no one will "win."

xyz Silver badge

Lol... That's probably because they don't know it's been installed. Pegasus for example.

75% of enterprise coders will use AI helpers by 2028. We didn't say productively

xyz Silver badge

Considering....

That I failed miserably to book a car parking space at an airport yesterday afternoon due to the shite nature of the "UX" involved and that hacking through my own annotated code from 5 years ago leaves me wondering what substances I'd been exposed to, I can think of nothing worse than letting a plastic developer (aka an AI) cobble together lines of stuff I have to wade through to check. Also Gartner wouldnt know its corporate ass from its corporate elbow.

"AI" is good for woolly or statistical analysis but for doing the dev, give me a break. We've all been down to StackOverflow, so an AI doesn't have to.

Starlink clashes with Telecom Italia over frequency data sharing

xyz Silver badge

"it may shift investment from Italy to other European countries if the situation is not resolved"

Yeah but you're forgetting the fact that the Starlink ground station connects to a contractually agreed list of local ISPs who provide the internety stuff to the Starlink customers in that country.

If Starlink can provide me over 300mbps for 45€ a month and is obviously paying the local ISPs a wedge, Starlink doesn't have to be any bigger.

As for customer service, the whole thing is pretty much thought out. I've been using it for over 18 months and it only went phut once in a heavy snow storm.

As someone else on here said, Starlink is just a space router putting an off grid wallah like me on line. So what's the problem?

FCC ups broadband benchmark speeds, says rural areas still underserved

xyz Silver badge

FFS

FCC, just bite the bullet, get over the whole "it must be an ISP" thing, and rollout Starlink (or whoever) and everyone will be happy. No ISP is going to drag their ass into the bushes for what you are willing to pay.

Teams or whatever chews through around 6GB a day so mobile is no use and mobile is all Wi-Fi calling these days anyway because there are no tower costs.

My "connection" to Starlink is always >300mbps down and 30mbps up, around 30ms latency and 45€ a month and I don't give a fuck which ISP it hooks up to as long as it works.

South Korea goes out on a limb to manage forests with AI, satellites

xyz Silver badge

Sounds daft I know but...

This is all good stuff. Tree counting is the easy bit, the ballbreaker is the satellite soil and light data resolution which is woeful, so probably why you need "AI" to guess the bits in between the sampling points.

Note to ESA (and by extension NASA). Your site says all data is free to everyone and it is but the access method if you are not "one of the club" is from the 1990s. Surely you have a public access API these days rather than the FTP kludge that is on offer.

Having spent my entire life avoiding people like the plague, the thought of "rent-a-friend" makes me want to puke. I've never understood what the purpose of a "friend" is for a start so I'll be avoiding this rent-a-friend thingy... and this morning I woke up to the news that I've got a follower on some website.
