Calling all Droids: BlackBerry’s giving away the Hub

typeo

I've been hoping the Hub would be released for other devices but after reading the reviews I'm not sure it works in the same way as it did on the BB10 devices by calling the other apps. I will give it a go though.

Since transferring over to Android I've been using an app called Disa which is along the similar lines of the Hub but only covers SMS, WhatsApp and FB currently. It deals with sending messages itself though without the need of opening up external apps. If it did email as well it would be perfect.

QWERTY-tastic BlackBerry Classic actually a classic

Already reviewed

Here is The Reg review of the Passport:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/10/08/review_blackberry_passport_smartphone/

typeo

"And it doesn’t have the zip of the BlackBerry Classic: it uses the same two-year-old, dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as the Q10, reviewed here."

Do you mean it doesn't have the zip of a BB Passport? Wanted to check as currently using a Q10 which is great for messaging and want to replace with either a Classic or Passport. Looking forward to trying BB Blend.

Re: Fritzbox

I use a Fritzbox 7390 on ADSL. I've been very happy with it's stability and the the link up with their plugin Repeater device. I've not used any of the DECT features though. There is an issue where some line tests apparently cause the line to ring so you get "ghost calls". As these tests generally happen overnight they could become annoying. There are forum articles on this issue. Fritz support is pretty good too along with their KB. If you do buy one make sure you are getting a UK/English version of the product as the Euro/German version can't be flashed with English language firmware which makes configuration a bit more challenging.

Looks like the X series is being canned to so there goes any further Nokia Android phones.

"In addition, we plan to shift select Nokia X product designs to become Lumia products running Windows."

BBM beta comes to Windows Phone

typeo

Re: >>Blackberry Refugees

Not sure how BBM is managing that, I'm easily getting 2 days of use from a full charge on my Q10 and can go into the 3rd day before having to plug it in with plenty of BBM and SMS use. YouTube use tends to hammer the battery though.

I seem to remember receiving an extensive mailing about this, though I guess this was from a regional health authority rather than a UK wide campaign if others haven't seen one.

I know of cases where records have been lost or sent to another practice when the patient hasn't even moved so I will be amazed if this system goes to plan or doesn't need even more cash thrown at it.

Microsoft, Nokia and the sound of colliding garbage trucks

"The Lumia 1020 is awesome in terms of what it has for camera and imaging and yet I think as one company, we would have doubled down on that amazing, even greater range of software and services investment around the core hardware platform,"

It seems to me that Nokia have put a lot of effort into Windows Phone with very little in the way of updates and features in the OS from the MS side. Even the Nokia VP has mentioned frustration with the way MS are treating Windows Phone: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/494885/20130726/nokia-microsoft-needs-evolve-windows-phone-succeed.htm

Microsoft's uncloaks Phone 8 developer preview

typeo

Big downer for perople with WP7 devices. Wonder how long ago the device makers knew this was coming. The Nokia devices did seem a bit rushed to market considering the hardware was similar to the N9 in appearance. It was almost as if they just relased it to get some sort of presence after the "burning platform" announcement and hte tie in with Microsoft.

Will add that I've been using a Lumia 800 recently and quite like it.

Instead of paying one fee to Sky to see all broadcasted Premier League games you now have to subscribe to ESPN at an extra cost. Fantastic result. Consumer choice, righto.

Y2.01K bug trips up Symantec

typeo
Thumb Down

Products on a downward slope

SEP has to be their worst product yet. Released with bugs from the outset and each time a new build is released you have to perform an upgrade of the servers or clients not just a simple Live Update. And the overhead of the client software seems to get worse with each release.

From past experiences no AV vendor is without faults but Symantec is king of the mountain for the number of faults with its software.

Symantec have also done a damn fine job of messing up Veritas products since they have taken them over. The support is awful.

RIP Personal Computer World

typeo

Not really...

a surprise. The quality of the content and reviews in this magazine had been going downhill for a while. There were a few exceptions to this, Guy Kewney being one of them. The UK edition of PC Magazine was a far better magazine, with more in depth reviews and details of technology. That went by the wayside ages ago now though. Printed media is struggling and in The Reg is an example of the way things have moved on.

Not sure...

...why they need to encourage voting. With Labours current popularity I should think there will be a record turn out to get rid of them.

As for incentives to vote, may be they should open up some sort of competition between the parties so they each offer different incentives. After all there shouldn't be a monopoly. The one with the best incentives will win! Oh hold on, they should already be doing this with their manifesto's and policies.
