What's losing steam at Apple? Pretty much everything

damian Kelly

This happened before. Slowly Apple lost direction and muddied their product line after Steve Jobs left the first time. This time he isnt coming back. No visionary at the helm, just an accountant incapable of original thought or an eye for detail.

BTW Dont think I like SJ for anything other than his focus. Any person who treat his kid like SJ did is beneath contempt in my book.

Three non-obvious reasons to Vote Leave on the 23rd

damian Kelly

Re: So where is the post to balance this out?

The French will certainly be as difficult as possible, as pointed out the whole thing is modelled on their way of doing things and they focus on their own self interest. However its the Germans who are most in trouble if we leave. They have been sending all sorts of lovely Porsches, BMWs, Mercs and Audis here for years and for this reason alone they will want free trade to continue. The Germans are also looking at picking up the fat end of the €8-11B (depending on which bullshitting politician you believe) that Europe will be down.

In terms of visas I have travelled to over 40 countries outside the EU and North America in the last and the only visa I needed was China. It cost be fifty quid and I got in a couple of weeks. Never needed a visa anywhere else and not even the EU will not be that daft or petty.

I find it hard to agree with a point of view that says we have to remain with an organisation because they will enforce petty and small minded revenge if we leave. If any argument would make me vote leave then its that.

TalkTalk attack: 'No legal obligation to encrypt customer bank details', says chief

Re: Does there need to be an obligation to "encrypt" ?

I never used my mothers maiden name. It was a shade embarrassing to tell the bank that my mothers maiden name was "Mother Fucker Cunt" when authenticating on the telephone banking. It never occurred to me they would use the same string for internet banking as telephone banking........

Got to stick me in the me too category. Bought an iPad 3 (because I was not going to get a beta product this time round) and I imagine it will last about as long as a laptop. I surf, read magazines and books play the current zynga/facebook game and see no reason to upgrade.

Phones tend to get upgraded every 2 years because they seem to loose battery and have a harder life. And because it doesnt cost me anything of course :-)

Backup software for HDD and Cloud

damian Kelly

Crashplan plus good friend plus G4 mac mini does it all for me for free (ignoring bandwidth and power). On the downside Crashplan no longer support the powerPC macs but it still works. I use it for half a dozen macs and two windows machines.

QNAP boxes can run a copy too, which is handy.

As a slight aside though just Crashplan does not protect against iPhoto library corruption. From harsh personal experience the package based file structure and incremental backups dont work well together. So while I had tested crashplan to restore an entire iPhoto libray what I didnt realise was the library slowly slowing down (and eventually loosing photos) was being accurately backed up. When I figured it out I had a nightmare rebuilding it all.

Re: A can of worms..

Ahh yes and you have spotted half of the story. At no point ever do dyson ever say anything about filters. They always talk about bags. That they can not make a cyclonic filter work on the mass of dust is not immensely surprising but that they use filters and dont ever mention them till you buy one and it stops as pretty much as inefficient as any other hoover.

On the plus side they look pretty, are massively overpriced, brittle yet heavy. All you want in a vacuum.

Oh and if you phone them refer to their vacuum as a hoover. They love it......

Technically I ought to tell a bunch of people should I scoot over to France on my boat. Do I bother? Not often anymore. I make sure I have the right documentation but I am seldom asked for it beyond occasionally needing proof of who I am to secure a spot in a harbour. Even with a trip to Morocco in the voyage log the customs man (who I seemed to have bumped into rather than explicitly asking to come aboard) seemed more interested in the electronics suite than what I had aboard.....

Plans for fully 3D-printed gun go online next week

damian Kelly

Re: David, you missed the point

Why would a milled PLASTIC gun make a metal detector go mental? The OP said nothing about milling in metal.

BTW a CNC mill costs a few grand, is a proven technology and trivial for anyone to make 3d shapes in any material. I could make a passable gun with 3 grands worth of machinery I have in my garage. A mill, lathe and piller drill are plenty. And whats more it would work and not blow up in my hand. A gun is a trivial machine to make.

Robot wars break out on poker sites

damian Kelly
Badgers

Certainly not!

Most players have a crib sheet.......

From my the stickies on the side of my monitor I see pocket aces win 1/3 all the way to the river (in the absence of more information) and a host of other snippets.

But you need to know how to use these odds. A high pair vs KT suited for example? A suited on flop? How do the hand odds compare with the pot odds. Are you seated in a strong position or a weak position.

So for the pocket ace question play hard and early KT suited stick around when pot odds make betting a good value proposition etc etc

damian Kelly

Absolutely correct

The attraction for online poker is that, compared to other gambling, is that the house takes a fixed rate. This means if you are good you can walk away with more than you started.

Because the site makes its money on the volume of money moved its own players only need to break even or maybe suffer a small loss and the site will still profit overall.

What people confuse with bots are the 100s of people I know who make a little here and a little there form these sites. I never play anything higher than $5/$10 but over the years have made a few thousands on these sites as a little hobby in the evening. Of course I have a shit list of avoid at all costs players (who wants to play with those better than oneself?) but every now and again you get accused of being a bot........

Android wins devs' hearts and minds

damian Kelly

Going the way of the Macintosh.....

As I have said before Apple will introduce the premium and market braking product. Initially rapidly gaining market share before the products become commodities. At this point cost becomes more important and Apple will retreat to quality/integration niche.

Samsung: we'll sell a million-plus Android tablets this year

iPad, iPhone == Mactintosh V2

Is this the beginning of the same thing that happened last time Apple had a killer product? In 10 years time will Apple be selling 5 - 10% of the smart phone/tablet machines and we all ask ourselves how they threw away their dominance again?

I think they will, sure their products will always be much better than Android and they will charge proportionally but Android doesnt have to be as good as iOS just a good enough price/functionality ratio that the additional price for the Apple device is not worth it.....

Even though the government stole back the railways from the shareholders half way through the development and a gazillion other idiotic Blair/Prescott fuckups throughout the build.

If we left running the railways to people who know what they are doing and didnt move the goal posts every 2 years things would be better. Ho hum you get what you pay for i guess and the Brits a re too cheap to afford decent trains.
