If only 0.006% care about BLOOD-SOAKED METAL ... why are we spending all this cash?

Laxman

Bad economic logic

This is horrible logic. Companies from Apple to Samsung to Microsoft have made their commitment to conflict free metals extremely clear. This company probably failed because almost no one knew about it and it had no economies of scale in a very competitive market.

And legislation should support what's right, not what's popular. Equal rights for minorities would never have happened otherwise.

Apple's secret outsource: 'Even more software to be made in India'

Laxman

How dare they outsource low value IT jobs like TESTING?

THE HORROR! And obviously those orientals can't know a thing about IT! We do it so much better!

Microsoft ad campaign savages Google over privacy

Laxman
Thumb Down

It is kinda scary...

... that Google can read my email and give me an ad ANYWHERE on the internet now.

It seemed okay when that was just restricted to GMail, but ... seeing ads that relevant everywhere = BAD.

Kindle Fire: An open letter to Jeff Bezos

Laxman

Perhaps the author will realise...

It's Google which has blocked its app from the Amazon Kindle and not the other way around - I don't think they want them on a device with the "Amazon Appstore" as the primary app market.

PS: I also think it's Google's default for making an OS that deals with all e-mail cept GMail in that horrible manner - lock in much?

MS speeds ahead as Google stalls on hardware acceleration

Laxman
Thumb Down

They still don't have Windows 7 support

Every other browser out there does the tabs in the Windows 7 task bar right, google is the only one who still hasn't implemented that in the browser yet.

Android spanks Apple’s iOS 4 in JavaScript race

Laxman

Javascript tests aren't important anymore

A page loading test really is the best way to measure browsing speed. There are so many technologies coming out, JS isn't (and never was, till google hyped it up) the best measure of browser speed.

Things like Hardware acceleration in the next gen of browsers will make speed tests irrelevant anyway.

Microsoft breaks Windows 7 three-apps netbook handicap

Laxman

Media

It comes with Windows Media Player, which for once has support for more formats than ever - DivX, H264, AAC,...

It doesn't have DVD support but then, netbooks don't even have DVD drives, and most DVD drives come with a external DVD decoder you can use in Media Player.

HP packaging madness continues apace

Laxman

I don't even find that funny

That is just plain wasteful. HP needs some sense knocked into them.

EU complaint is just more of the same, says Intel

Laxman

AMD sabotages itself

Their desktop/laptop offerings haven't up to par even since Intel launched the Core Duo processor, and Barcelona didn't work the way they planned...

Plus, they're horrible at marketing compared to Intel. And they made an overpriced acquisition of ATi.

AMD just needs itself and some time to bring itself down.

Firefox 3 Download Day falls flat on face

Laxman

Firefox RC2 was still buggy for me...

...as in it stopped responding quite frequently on my Windows Vista running laptop. So, if Firefox 3 final is the same as RC2, Thank god for Opera 9.5!!

Not that I can't just use IE7...

EC takes own sweet time backing Microsoft ODF move

Laxman

@Lars

How much should commissions step into the fray? Is making a comment like this of any use?

Laxman

Can't the EC mind their own?

It's not their business to deal with vendor lock in by commenting on stuff like that. And since both OOXML and the old Office formats have had their specs released, It simply isn't the ECs business anymore. Nobody has a right to make MS support ODF anyway (expect MS themselves).

AMD cries foul over Intel's 'river of cash' flowing to Dell

woeful chipmaker incapable of doing much right.

Isn't that what AMD has become these days as well?

A week in the life of Open XML

Laxman

OXML will be the de facto standard anyway.

Depending on how fast the new Office 2007 format spreads, most documents will be in the OXML format soon (Unless ODF becomes the default MS Office format)

Plus, I find the MS argument that ODF didn't support things like tables within tables or images within tables (something like that) quite valid.

IBM smacks rivals with 5.0GHz Power6 beast

Laxman

This vs Sun's gear

I checked out the Sun UltraSPARC T2+ today - that seems like a (really) fast processor as well (or so the benchmarks suggest).

Is there anywhere I can see the benchmarking results mentioned in the article. I just want to check out the number of CPUs in the competing products ( I have a tinkling it's going to be somewhat less than 32.)

plus, on a price to performance ratio basis, POWER6 is horrible (IMHO).

Early calls to simplify Eclipse

Laxman

Lose that SWT crap.

Seriously, they lost the battle to Swing years ago. And having most of your current GUI code as Swing and the RCP using SWT for GUIs is a big disadvantage with the RCP.

And simplify the IDE. Everything could be so much more intuitive.

Motorola cuts off gangrenous right arm

Laxman

Their mobile lineup is bad...

It's not just that they support so many platforms - but the only compelling Motorola phones I have seen in years has been the RAZR V8/V8i, which was good for while it lasted. Plus, the lineup is very patchy and they aren't present at some crucial price points - which I think matters in developing economies like India.

They need to emulate Nokia - a lot of phones, at every price point in the market.

HP to ship SuSE on India PCs

I can't imagine a lot of people who would want their computer without Windows and MS Office (that'll be pirated too, most of the time)

Dell 'committed' to AMD despite consumer kit shift to retail

Laxman

AMD has lost its edge

Performance wise, Intel has been better than AMD ever since they released the Core2 CPUs. I wouldn't just say aggressive advertising on Intel's part is behind AMDs woes. But , Intel is *much better* than AMD when it comes to advertising.

Server sales drive Sun's MySQL strategy

Laxman

Sun's middleware is getting better...

Glassfish is a very usable and well documented in the open source app server space. MySQL is great, and even the Netbeans IDE is getting better with every release. Sun Micro is obviously working very hard to improve their software stack and it shows.

Sparks fly over electric shock dealing Dell laptop

Alert

Happens to me...

I get a tingle from my Inspiron E1505/6400 when I touch it at some places. I was worried, but I decided that getting it fixed would be more of a hassle that keeping my hands off the parts that cause the tingle. I guess I'll talk to tech support about this.
