.. was wasted on doing this research? How much of the considerable IQ of the boffins was squandered on this banality? Why have el Reg wasted our time with something any moron could figure out for themselves?
Millions wasted on marketing for a lame Company... May be they should spend their money on producing a product people will actually buy instead of wasting it on lame backhanders at competitors.
As iDisk was the only reason I was paying for mobileMe, I guess I wont be using any of Apples "Foggy" services.

For a company which had a wonderful (if misguide) ideology of getting every kid in the world educated and using technology, it seems to have sold that ideology out pretty quickly.
The whole point of using FOSS on the beast was to make it easy to support and develop. Seems stupid to me to let MS push Windows into the market these were aimed at.
But that is typical for the world now. Money and personal gain is more important than helping our fellow human beings.
I am sure when the U.S. goes south the rest of the world will show just as much compassion and understanding to it.

The problem is that most money making scientific endeavors stand on the shoulders of those scientists who actually do "Base Science". "Base Science" is not money making with in itself, so most "economically astute" people discount it. With out it there is no Money Making Science.
The whole idea of science paying its own way is a fallacy, Science is the way to get the building blocks of innovation. Neglect it and you can wave innovation goodbye.
Governments are supposed to encourage innovation to enable growth of the nation both economically and culturally.... One of the main ways they do this is in building the knowledge.levels of the nation. At a personal level with schools, colleges and universities and at a national level with the support and funding of scientific endeavors.
Here in Australia, there has been a checkered history with our National scientific institution the CSIRO. One of the things I have seen the CSIRO do in the past at a very succsessful level is work in the "Base" sciences. A team here came up with the gene shears and have done ground breaking work in other fields. But once again a lot of the work is on science with no integral economic value,
But with out that research being done, money making exercises like that between Monsanto and the CSIRO, would not have happened.
So supporting only the science that can make money will eventually lead the nation into stagnation and eventually into economic failure.

Microsoft Windows Vista is an awesome piece of software. Why I have it on my new laptop. It is the best Hardware Test Suite I have every used. I use it regularly to stress test my lappy. And I swear I hear a sigh from my lappy when ever I boot back in to Kubuntu.:)
Mines the Ocelot fur lined trench coat with the Vista Refund application in the pocket ;).
Windows Vista is a wonderful. MS has created an Awesome PC hardware Test Suite. I use it to stress test my *NEW* laptop all the time.
I swear I hear the lappy sigh when I boot into Debian instead of Vista.

The IP laws currently in force in the US and a number of other western countries are for all intensive purposes, CRAP.
But I don't think people want to see the end of the IP laws, just a massive re-think and restructure. Patents laws for example do need to be reformed. Things like Patent squatting needs to be addressed. Same with the Copyright fair use laws.
A simple suggestion that may or may not be a good thing is that patents should only be granted to organizations that will develop them. None of this business models built on patent licensing alone.
You don't get to hold a patent if all you intend on doing is licensing it out and not developing it. And just to scare poeple, Patents that are not developed into working products with in say 4 years get released to public domain.
The whole point of the patenting laws is to let inventors gain remuneration for their ideas while promoting progress.
Business have forgotten the second part.... Thats why we have IP piracy and why the IP laws are falling apart.
I don't want to see the end of patent laws... I want to see then do what they were supposed to do, promote progress.

Transcoding does not automatically mean quality degradation.
If Jon was smart (And I think he is) he would have built a transcoding package that would go out of its way to keep the quality as high as possible with in the bounds of the encoding technology.
Unless he has sold out and has tailored the software for the entertainment industry. Which i doubt very much.

Divided opinion on such affairs is not new. Each side can give examples of why the other is talk out their left tit. Arguments flare and people rant. But I think most are missing the point.
You can argue economy or ecology all you want. Reality is we are living on this world, its our home. Why not stop the stupid hostility and treat the earth as you would treat your home.
Without taking care of it, we all end up in the same boat. Dead.

I think you might want to google the history of Linux.
People don't just develop software for "Money" or to make a living. A lot of people develop for the joy of it and the joy of giving to a community.
But, then again, there are a lot of people on the world who really dont give a rats arse about anyone but themselves.

If they never had it in the first place how can they call it a "Loss"?
Their is no real proof that those who download movies would ever actually pay for it anyway...... Seriously, how can you possibly state there was any loss of revenue from piracy?
I don't buy music anymore.... CD or online, I listen to the radio when i want to listen to new music, or stream it from free internet radio stations. Shrug.
I just wish these institutions would stop calling it a loss. It is not.

...that poeple have know that windows has been and still is full of holes and that constant vigilence and a raft of security procedures are required to "Harden" Windows sufficiently to prevent Trojans, Viruses, Malware etc. But there are still people out there who dont protect their data or computers...
Why? lots of reasons, ignorance, apethy, arogance or lack of skills.
How could you possibly think that the same does not apply to business?
For along time SCADA networks have been safe because they were isolated. But with in implementation of new business pratices, new markets and changes to "Core focuses" a lot are now being connected up to Corporate Networks.
New technologies such as Wireless Broadband, wifi and VPN are being introduced to enable the "Valuable" Data that SCADA Systems hold to mined and utilized. Or to even centralize control to allow downsizing, you name it, they have all been used as excuses.
Unfortunately, like in any business, security always comes last or never at all. Or more likely when the business is hurt by a breach in it.
What can I say? Dont think for one minute that the idea of using the SCADA as a reasource for business automatically means they will use the right level of security when connecting it to their corporate networks. If you do you are living in a dream world.
I have worked in the SCADA/NMS field for over 8 years now and you had better believe they are vulnerable.
Most Electrical Utilities all around the world have links between their Corporate and SCADA Networks. And of course there are always links from corporate networks to the Internet.
But that ia just one way to attack the SCADA Networks. Connectivity bewteen the SCADA Networks and the field devices (Electical Substations for example) can range for striaght out analogue Radio communications to Wireless Broadband and Wifi, leaving even more places to break in to the SCADA Network.
Another thing to take into consideration is the lax security in a lot of the Applications used to run the SCADA systems. Lots of default passowrds never changed, bad programming pratices also leave holes wide open.
One major problem that is still not an easy one to fix is the patch cycle required for SCADA Systems. Most SCADA Systems are five 9s operations and as such require thourough testing of any change to the underlying software. So patches for security holes and porely writting software are not applied the instant they are release as each needs to be evaluated extensivly prior to application to prevent system outages.
So all in all I do believe the CIAs' assertions. SCADA Systems at this present time are security nightmares.
