Apple pilfers rips off student's rejected iPhone app

JCL
Meh

in that case

I suppose if it's ok for Apple to call an app "Wi-Fi Sync" because it syncs over Wi-Fi, even though there is another existing app for the same platform called that, then it'd be ok for, oh, some other company to have an app store and call it an app store even though there is already an app store called App Store owned by Apple?

Netflix overtakes Bittorrent as traffic champ

JCL

I agree

I agree with both those points. We pay the same amount each month for the service, but the amount of content just doesn't compare.

That said, Netflix wins because I live in the middle of nowhere with a slow postal service and no dvd rental store, I can't bring myself to watch movies on cable because of the never ending adverts, and because it's cheap, instant and generally has a good quality picture.

Don't you believe it

I had an iPod that "ran itself". It was like there was a poltergeist in there. It would write emails to my colleagues, start playing random videos/songs, delete emails as I was attempting to read them, insist on showing me parts of websites I didn't need to see, you name it. It definitely didn't like it when I tried to get involved. To say nothing of the apps that disappear as you are using them.

It's gone now, but, you know, I liked it enough to get it replaced, flaws and all. It was pretty easy when they saw how many times I'd rebooted it or restored it to factory settings.

Purpose?

I believe the purpose is to keep you on Google's search results page for longer, making it stickier and giving you more opportunity to look at their ads. Personally I find it incredibly annoying, but not as annoying as their "improved" image search results page.

I assume they still have ads on their results pages?

Canada

You should try living here. The market is sewn up between a couple of companies who are able to gouge you at every turn. Sim charge, sim activation charge, 911 monthly charge, network access charge, pay for incoming and outgoing calls, caller ID & voicemail, though I don't have to pay for incoming texts now. And if you want to move to a different vendor but keep your phone number, not only will it take 4 hours of conversation (with admittedly a nice man), but you will have to pay for a month of contract that you can't use. (At which point I and the nice man started manically laughing at the ridiculousness of it all).

Then there's the price plans. No wonder that mobile/cell phones aren't as popular here as they are in the UK.

FAIL

It goes on.

From http://onlinejournalismblog.com/2010/03/05/hull-daily-mail-hyperlocal-smear-job-backfires/

That comment is particularly salient when reading the Hull Daily Mail’s justification for running the story:

“What Mr Smith has done is not illegal, but it is certainly not consistent with publishing a responsible local website carrying reports, pictures and videos of community events and activities, many featuring children. It is in the public interest that people know the truth about the man behind HU17.net”

Replace ‘Mr Smith’ with ‘the Hull Daily Mail’ and you get an idea where the backlash is coming from.

Webmasters fume as Google profiles signed-out searchers

JCL

I agree

While more relevant results is a laudable goal (and I'm no fan of SEO), by concentrating results on sites that you already use Google is effectively narrowing down the references that you have access to. There are jobs/tasks out there that can be aided by "happening on" a site with a different point of view or a different way of presenting information. This can help produce more creative work or get around a mental block. I'm guessing that this creativity will be made more difficult in the future.

iPhone upgrades - a one-way control-freak street

JCL
Thumb Down

eh?

Nothing to do with "geeks" thanks. Now, a good friend of mine, a ski instructor and iphone owning non-geek and spent 6 hours (on and off) on the phone to the service provider after an upgrade stopped the thing from working (though it did show the lovely apple logo). After I got the the thing working again (and restored the address book, though that looked dicey at one point) the phone could no longer access emails. Apparently a "known fault" with the service provider with no indication of when it'll be fixed.

You don't need to be a geek to see the sense in being able to roll back updates, but you do need to be objective, which I'm sorry to say doesn't seem to be your way.

As my friend said, I only bought this &^%$&^%$ phone because it is supposed to just work.

@Duncan Hothersall, I saw them in London - peeled oranges and sliced apples. I also saw an egg sandwich filling that had "Caution, may contain eggs" on the side. @Vladimir - Of cats and cows

Vladimir, how much one-to-one experience have you had with cows? Other than seeing it in the meat aisle? Unlikely as it may seem, I've managed to nurse a cow back to health after it had a particularly harrowing birth - so bad that she lost the use of her back legs for eight weeks. So, having experience of cats and cows, I can assure you, that anyone that has spent a great deal of time doing something like this can testify that cows have as much personality as cats and are a lot more useful, you just wouldn't want it curled up at the end of your bed.

Belkin boss 'extremely sorry' for cash-for-good-reviews plan

Not at all AC

Deary me, for shame A. Coward. It's easy to call someone a shill or fanboi behind anonymity just because you don't agree with them. Perhaps I've just been lucky that I've never had any problems with anything I've bought from them, shit happens, I've no beef with them. Mind you, I am comparing the wireless router with a BT Home Hub and some other thing from way back that looked like a crappy green stingray. Rest assured, should I buy something made by them and it doesn't work I'll attempt to become more cynical, hide behind an AC, and let you know what I think.

JCL

They didn't have to

They didn't have to do that, their products are good. I've never had problem with anything Belkin (router, cables, cards, etc) and often choose their product over the competition when given a choice. Oh, and no, I wasn't paid to say that.

I'm assuming the employee has had their knuckles firmly rapped.

I tried them in Verbier as a Christmas treat for friends and ended up serving biscuits they were that flat. Now, my wife mind, she seems to do well cooking Yorkshires in Fernie, Canada even though it's about 1km up. Phorm losses shoot up by half

JCL

link?

I've asked a couple of people who've never heard of El Reg (well I never!) and they're in the clear. I am too. Maybe BT are excluding readers of these types, maybe the sample is so small we've missed it, and maybe they haven't actually started yet.

I remember when this first came up someone posted a link to an academic page that ran a few tests so that you could determine whether your traffic was being modified or not. Does anyone remember what that link was?

Hmm, is she a greedy old moo or is there more to this? If I read it correctly it looks like she was part of a campaign to oust the mayor. ..he's obviously not demented in his overall case if his beliefs have turned out to be right. Also, there is also the broader concern that texts written by anyone, anyone at all, can be used not just in the money markets, but for definitions in a court of law as was seen this last couple of weeks.

I'm happy to use Wikipedia for trivial purposes - finding out about a celeb, film, or a starting point for research into open-source software, but I'd never use it for anything really important. Unfortunately not everyone knows that the articles can't be trusted in this way.
