Perching precariously close to the edge?

Alongside their recent manufacturing blunders, you have to wonder why they are not pouring more effort into making their chips smaller and more efficient? An avid gamer already needs to be living right next to a nuclear power plant, syphoning off the power grid whilst bathing in a pool of liquid nitrogen to run the damn chips!

With Chipzilla having the muscle to develop (hopefully half decent) combined CPU/GPU graphics, and AMD/ATI having the perfect platform also, you have to wonder where Nvidia fit into this market in the future?

PS3 too expensive, won't work blah blah blah.....

I have a PS3 and access to a Wii. At first the Wii was fun - but it's novelty soon wears off when you've wiggled the Wiimote in exactly the same manner for the last six different games.

And to those that keep saying that PS3 is too expensive etc etc. Please do your homework. In comparison to Xbox 360, you get a hell fo a deal - a machine that's considerably mroe powerful, has both gaming and high definition media functions, and would cost twice as much to implement a HD setup using seperates.

People touted the PS2 as too expensive, and wrote it off - then look what happened ;-)

It's very difficult to compare these three consoles, as only the PS3 and the 360 are considered next gen, and are in for the long haul, not the quick 'smash and grab' sales that we are seeing with the Wii.

A lot of people are predicting that once the Wii reaches saturation, it'll drop off the radar, whereas both the PS3 and 360 will continue to garner sales over a much longer period.

Proper Hackers provide a service

Hackers provide a proper service to the online community, searching out and detailing vulnerabilites within systems in order to improve or build upon current security technologies and practices to ensure evolution of the system itself.

When massively distributed systems become more and more widely used, (and for more than what is in essence 'just a game') I would prefer them to have been more effectively secured by doing just this kind of work, than let them come into existence and fall down at the first hurdle due to insecurities.

So, what happened to common sense then? They initially cheesed me off by calling their chips things like 'Athlon XP 2000+ etc etc' - which only served to confuse the hell out of a lot of people because they never actually ran at 2GHz or whatever the number afterwards was - which is what the naming convention seemed to imply.

Now they come up with this nonsensical way to describe what chip your dropping into your machine. Idiots.

Who gives a crap?

Lets be honest here - it's not THAT much of an upgrade.

Engadget have already tried it out against the 360 classic and the HDMI output makes no discernable difference over Component regards the display.

Not only that but it's not even built on the 65nm process yet, so the machine runs just as hot and the disc drive is still as loud as the classic version.

The only benefit I can see is the larger hard disk - but then you can mod a classic box to get the same result.

Elite - pfffftttt.

What of the rest of the Country...

We Welsh folk don't get recognition for St David's Day, neither do the Scots get a St Andrews Day theme.

What makes the English so much better than the rest of us - pure bloody arrogance again!

And therein lies the difference.....

The wii is (primarily) aimed at younger gamers, not bothered about the graphical capabilities but who want to experience fun and innvovative new games via the wiimote controllers.

The PS3 on the other hand is aimed at gaming and multimedia - lets not forget it actually supports HDTV resolutions up to 1080p - TV's that are still way too pricey to take advantage of.

And yes, the Wii and the PS3 were released at the same time - there's been more development for the wii because its a damn side easier!!!! The cell chip (based around PowerPC Architecture) is a new concept that most developers are having to learn on the fly - we're talking about moving from (seemingly) multithreaded environment to a (seemingly) parallel computing environment - not easy!!

Re; What about choice

What I am doing, is stating that if you want to mould the Xbox 360 into the same kind of hardware available by spending money on a PS3, then it'll cost you more.

Of course you don't have to buy those add ons, but to get a console of similar capability, then you pay extra.

That being the case, you get what you pay for and the 360, when having these 'add-ons' doesn't seem quite the 'easy choice' its made out to be.

I'm not defending the pricing, merely pointing out the differences and what you'd have to spend to get something similar from Microsoft.........

Actually not that expensive

Actually, for an xbox 360 owner to get the same kind of hardware that's bundled with a PS3, the cost of a PS3 is actually lower.

For instance, a PS3 in UK is £425. With that you get console, blu-ray, wi-fi, rechargeable wireless controller, and (for now at least) free online gaming.

For an xbox 360 owner to get the same you need:

1. Console - £280

2. Wireless Adapter - £60

3. Play & Charge Kit - £16

4. Xbox Live Subscription - £40

5. HD-DVD Drive - £120

Total - £516

Not such a bad deal after all then...........
