iPlayer repeat fees threaten BBC earthquake

Chris Judd
FAIL

Re: Because of the unique way the BBC is funded.....

Perhaps before you go on your rant against 'idiots' who think you dont need a license to watch iPlayer... they are actually correct, and you are wrong.

As has already been mentioned, and can be confirmed with a quick look at the TV licensing site, you only need a license to watch live streams. Catchup TV is exempt.

Better luck next time.

"Easier, faster, funner"... poor effort. They couldn't even find a valid word for their tagline!

Sony Tablet S

Chris Judd
Thumb Down

I had a look at this in Currys recently, found it horribly plasticky. Felt very cheap and flimsy, where most other tablets have gone for the sleek, solid brushed aluminium-type look/feel. I think Sony's got this one wrong personally.

Prepare for another surge of Touchpads on eBay then... not that I'm jealous!

Gmail users howl in anguish at 'disappeared' accounts

re: Gmail users stats

I think you got your sums wrong... 150,000 is 8% of 1,875,000, not 0.08%. So total gmail users would be 187,500,000. Which seems more plausible.

I thought it sounded quite handy - I have a smaller main HDD, with a 1TB media drive. I could have my OSs and files backed up and sync'd, and just leave the media drive.

BT mulls upping apprentice numbers

Unhappy

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

The UK has no restriction on the use of the term 'engineer'. Unlike the US where it's a professional moniker, and you have to be a paid up member of a professional body to use it. Or so I'm told.

Home Sec says 17m ID cards in circulation by 2017

Chris Judd

They think 28% coverage is a big achievement ...?

Only 28% of the population by 2017... so they'll still be useless for decades. The card is an epically bad idea, but if it was ever to work it would have to be a case of everybody having one. If only 28% have it, you can always say "no guvna, I dont have one, here's my (faked) [passport/drivers license/whatever]".

Software update spikes certain Freesat set-top boxes

@AC 12:19

I've got a Humax Freesat HD box, nothing but praise for it. Was pushed into it by the appauling freeview reception where I live, but I'm really glad I switched over.

'Interfering' BT Vision attracts campaigner glares

Chris Judd

Not actually BT Vision that's at fault...

The article seems to imply that the device causing the problem here isn't the Vision box, it's the Powerline adapters. These are just 3rd party branded devices, not really BTs responsibility. They'll just switch vendor and carry on regardless. The problem was probably that BT went with the cheapest adapters they could find, rather than decent quality ones.

California train smash driver sent text seconds before disaster

Chris Judd

@Luke Watson

Actually, lets say both trains were travelling at a speed of 60mph (makes the maths nice and easy), then 1 minute before impact they would have been 2 miles apart; not so close really. It'd probably be wildly inefficient on a busy section of track to be segregating trains more than 2 miles apart...?

Mandatory disclaimer, I'm not a train network engineer, so this is a very uneducated guess.

Atom-based Eee PC to hit UK in June

Dilemma

Was going to get my girlfriend to bring me one of these back from hong kong (works out about £260), but having second thoughts if the Atom could give it a fair bit more battery life. But then I'd have to pay UK prices. Worth the extra £70 for the atom?
