Moving Target

So, a few lessons learned about storage modernization:

1) You still need to deal with the legacy apps and platforms, as the vendors will not. Thus standardizing onto a modern storage architecture cannot mean rip and replace, it can only mean add to the existing infrastructure and migrate those platforms that are supported by the new SAN.

2) Way too many of the "modern technologies" are based on the old technologies. Such systems are painful to administer, even though they support all of the modern requirements.

3) "Modern" is a moving target, so expect that practically none of the vendors are going to support everything you read about in the trade mags. The available feature sets are going to migrate even during the RFP and analysis process. You should pick a vendor who supports the absolute requirements you need to day and has the requirements you want on his futures plan.

I cry BOGUS!

The numbers posted here cannot be right. As Wikipedia puts it, this article appears to be full of original research.

1) 356.9 million miles per hour is a little more than .5c, so if that was the primary source of lag, the index of refraction of your microwave medium (air) would be almost 2!!! (Idx = c/v --> 671 M MPH / 356.9 M MPH = 1.88)

2) Another tidbit: 356.9 million MPH x 8.23 ms = 815 miles. And here I thought the "round trip" distance from Chicago to New York City was 1630 miles....

US Trademark Regulations

Super Green Mac?

I wonder what the market would be for a Super Green MAC? With a 2.0 GHz CPU that draws only 5-13 Watts, you would have a heck of a marketing platform. With the green craze sweeping the planet, I suspect that many would buy it.

Hmmmm, come to think of it, an Apple laptop (standard, not Air) would have a much longer battery life with such a small power draw... More fuel for the marketing fire...
