It's not really an S3 alternative though is it?

While I am a Nokia fan I wouldn't say Symbian is a competitor against the latest Android phones. Yes, it has an amazing camera but what else does it have to compete with?

Re: Lets keep this in perspective

I found tunes on Zune that I'd looked for for ages and not found elsewhere. Also I tested a Lumia 800 expecting to hate it but found it crisp and clean, intuitive and very connected. I really wanted to hate it but was sad to give it back. Come upgrade time I'll be hunting around for the 900.

I'm no marketing drone either. Have you actually tried one for more than a few minutes?

Very well put! Ha ha ha

WTF?

So am I missing something here?

If they only have 3 packs to sell off how will that ensure 4 players in a competitive market? Is this what Three are mainly pissed off about?

While QR might not exactly be setting the world alight

I have noticed the number of ads in higher end publications that contain a QR code seems to be growing by the day. I tried to point this out to a few folks at work and they had no idea what they were (although they all had QR readers on their phones), a year ago however you would have been lucky/unlucky depending on where you stand, to see one per publication.

I think some people are desperate to see these in use simply because of the upgrade in equipment it will mean. I have taken part in numerous surveys lately asking how I would feel about paying for things this way and what would be n upper limit etc. I'm all for it but think QR will be everywhere before long and NFC will really need to do something special and needed to counter QR.

Lots of comments

From people who haven't used one. I have an N8. I got it for the camera. Yeah I've heard all the stuff about sensors and processors etc etc etc but this takes the best photos I have ever seen on a phone or any camera I have owned. I take loads of photos of my kids and sometimes other things but I'm no pro and I don't use it professionally. For a camera on a half decent (more than that in my opinion but the haters will shout me down) phone it is pretty damn good and everyone I show is really impressed with the shots I take. I cannot believe that this new 41MP one that they have been working on for 5 years will be worse as many on here have claimed. All this talk from people who know better. Wait until you see it fools. Will it be the best camera on the market ever made? I doubt it, but will it be better than any other mobile phone camera currently on the market? Probably, if the shots friends have shown me on theirs are anything to go by.

@Skelband

On smaller payments such as parking and traintickets you just put your card in and it doesn't ask for your PIN but generally this is for smaller amounts. I was surprised the first time too but I guess the amounts are acceptable to the banks as you would have to use it a lot of times to make it worthwhile before the card was presumably cancelled.

But surely if fraud has been MASSIVELY reduced as claimed here (and frankly I believe it as growing up I knew of people living off card fraud as it used to be easy when it was just a signature) why would the banks not want to make those savings? Are the hundreds of millions seen as an acceptable loss? And finally, most POS chip and pin machines cost £15 or so so it's hardly a massive investment and the savings to the business doing the selling in terms of man hours dealing with the police and paperwork etc should more than cover it.

I just can't believe people are opposed to it.

I got me a Panasonic 42 incher

with Smart Vierra connects tuff and it works just fine. The apps update fairly regularly when new ones come out and for the price I paid I cannot complain. Yeah it might be obsolete in a year or two but so is every phone you buy and PC and laptop. Mine has a built in FreeviewHD thing, iPlayer, Youtube and the others mentioned in the Panasonic review and I'd be surprised if it doesn't have YouView when that comes out. If you want a simple big screen with HDMI then there are quite a few out there. This review was 10 SMART TV's though and seems to have done it's job.

Andy Hards

Sounds like not many people are interested

I managed to bag one for £350 in a Panasonic shop opening but to be honest I was just wanted a big screen (well 42") HD one to replace the massive old box that had been filling up half the room. The fact that it came with a bit of the internet was a sort of bonus ( the wifi adapter was extra and Panasonic wanted £70 for theirs) but I had to get a lead to connect it. Other than iPlayer, and Youtube we don't use any of the other bits. YouView will hopefully change that if it gets added but the Facebook and Twitter apps are not easy to use. I've read a lot of stuff lately about how it will revolutionize TV and I'll be able to Tweet and update Facebook while watching a show and talking to the web about it but unless you have a wireless keyboard you have to enter everything with you remote and frankly it's a lot easier to do with my phone or using the desktop so I really can't see that bit catching on. The NetFlix app (if it comes to Viera TVs) seems reasonable enough It has Ustream, DailyMotion, Screenrush, Viewster, PlayJam, Aupeo, Euronews and Eurosport but most of these need a subscription and I'm not paying extra to watch content of dubious worth when most of it can be found on Youtube. Skype needs yet another piece of kit fitted so I'll give that a miss too. Having Youtube on a big screen is sometimes usefull and iPlayer is great but as for the rest? My icon says enough.

As someone else mentioned most people have all of these things already, this just brings a bit more convergence.

3 offers proper honest to god AYCE UNLIMITED

While I have set up Giffgaff for a few mates who know even less than me, I have been with 3 for years and they boast about how unlimited their current unlimited plan is. It is really UNLIMITED. Just saying.

Can I just explain the Texas Toast reference..

They are fairly large tablets that are toasty coloured, although more biscuity in my opinion although I am stumped on why the Texas bit was added. Maybe the drugs are just shit in Texas?

Andy Hards

Synonamous?

Just cos a few companies are trying to promote it, does not mean it's gonna be the way forward. Has anyone here used it yet? Does anyone care? I'm happy with cash and cards still. I don't think that makes me a dinosaur.

Andy Hards
Unhappy

Maybe cos

there are not many people who have an iPad who don't have an iPhone they thought they there would be the same sort of fanatacism amongst the Blackberry fans but I think the 'Crackberry' has had it's day. It was everywhere in the US for a while, then the texters over here made use of them while they were cheap at 3 and vodafone etc but as someone else's dad said above, it needed to be either twice as good and half the price to compete with the iPad, not the same price and half as good.

Shame really. I thought that they might be the ones to compete but it seems that Apple will be at the top of this market they created for a while yet.

Andy Hards
Happy

Been with them for years

and have never had anything more than minor problems. The AYCE data is fantastic. My phone is the wifi hotspot for my laptop now when I can't jump on anyone elses. They actively encourage you to use as much as you want. It doesn't slow down as the 1st AC thought it might. Who else is offering anything close?

Andy Hards
Holmes

Dunno about that...

Yeah the N97 was a pile of shoot but every phone on the market has it's issues and Nokia's are no different (N97 excepted as it was nothing BUT issues). Find me a perfect phone and I'll find you a fault.

The build quality on HTC, the awkwardness of the SE phones and don't get me started on the Jesusphones. The technerd market follows the next shiny thing to come out. The N97 may have annoyed many but if Nokia pull the cat out of the bag with their Windows phones (I know it's a gamble but do you really think they would put out something worse than their current crop?) just see the tech nerds come running.

Andy Hards
Megaphone

Well I love my N8

And from what I saw of the N9 it seemed to cause quite a few bloggers to get the tissues out.

Not a popular view I know but how's about we wait till the bring out a Windows phone and see what they can do with it rather than slagging them off with the same old story. Is'nt this the same story that has been published for the last few months?

Andy Hards
Thumb Up

And seriously, I mean it, no cameras! I shouldn't even be telling you this!

I think it was probably a case of 'and you mustn't post this to your blogs guys' with a little pause while everyone got their camera phones out. And why not, Nokia could do with a bit of positive press for a change.

X7

I've had a go on the X7 and loved it. It feels nice and weighty in your hand, the screen in massive and if it is half as good as the N8 I'll be making it my next phone. Probably gonna get a load of grief for saying this but, just as Nokia seemed to be on the right track they seem to be giving up.

@ Mr Gumby

Thanks for the info but do you really think they will be able to compete with the big boys simply because they are using LBS?

They have already been fined by OFCOM for flase advertising by bigging up their coupns which are one day only offers which ALWAYS require a significant purchase at the beginning. It's like when newspapers offer save £5 when you spend £50 but on a larger scale. Chase Manhattan and Bloomberg, among others, are far too quick to give huge valuations to companies that still haven't even made a profit. Lets see if anyone even remembers them other than for this ridiculously overpriced valuation in 2 years. All the newspapers are getting into this biz at the moment (or are they just frachises of Groupon?) and it seems like a very small bubble that will soon pop when people get sick of the conastant bombardment of emails and vouchers that they will never use.

The kids watch their favs over and over again and if there is something I want to watch it's often recorded as then I know I will be able to watch it when I want and speed through the ads. That in the UK as they are privately owned lpaces it's up to the owners and just like anywhere in the UK you can ask someone to leave. Yuo don't have to have them in your airport if you don't want them there. During the recent snow chaos there were reports of some people being told not to film on threat of being kicked out into the cold rather than the nice warm floors of the airport but the mgt then backtracked and said it wasn't a problem. I think it's just in certain areas though.

See and hearing what they want to hear. I used to play this game as a stoner teen looking up at the sk yand interpreting the clouds. Looks that one looks like a pig on a stick.
