GhostR contacted El Reg
Is there something we don't know about, like an El Reg insider that has a secondary past-time ?

I agree with you on most all points except that when there is a problem in that part of the world it can quite easily escalate and become a problem for us too. So witherwhen help nip it in the bud or we play a waiting game where will eventually become involved on a whole other level.
Its basically a lose/lose game. There are no winners anywhere.
Now which browser/search engine will they be allowing their employees to use ? I imagine that more personal details leak through the browser/search engine rather than through the OS.
We all know that MS systems phone home but does anyone know with exactitude which information is being relayed ? Obviously some licence information and probably software installation but what else ?
It would be truly interesting to understand why science budgets are withheld and yet crazy amounts of monies are being sent elsewhere.
Not enough kickbacks ? It seems that politicians, on both sides, are increasingly doing only what lines their own pockets on a scale that we have never seen before.
I use the word politicians lightly as it appears that they are more like business mem or bankers.
"It also hints at flaws so damning that it would itself ruin the business"
If Tesla goes down that's roughly 140000 people out of a job, and a good percentage of which are engineers; I would be surprised to learn that such "damning flaws" would have been ignored by so many of them that they ended up on production models.
Musk might not be liked by many but it is rather unfair to spit on Tesla's employees at the same time.
OOps
Yes, it was a missing "J"..and your Oinks made me laugh..
And depending what you were on made that Flying Pig very, very interesting, there was a whole lot more than just the pig though..
Definitely my most memorable and enjoyable concert..( Seconded by Tina Turner who I don't really care for but is just amazing live - Bob Dylan is one of my all time heroes but he goes down as the worst artist ever on a live stage) ..
"It's kind of ironic that for all the talk about how Europe is this evil bastion of socialism, it's more of a capitalist free market than the US."
I would love to know who exactly thinks that Europe is an evil bastion of socialism. Having lived almost in Europe almost my entire life I would be very quick to state that I don't see much of that socialism ( the only socialist aspect that I see are the health care systems but the buck stops there).. Here money rules just like most of the rest of the world.
I would suggest Cuba, or Venezuela as examples of evil bastions of socialism.
If it weren't for the requirement to reboot production servers at almost every update then I am sure that updating would be done far more often..
Linux systems very rarely require actual reboots whereas Windows is the defacto condition.
How many here have gone down on their knees and prayed and made offering to their IT Gods that the server will actually get back into a running state , with all services up after the obligatory reboot.
Thank god for VMs and Snapshots, it has seriously saved our skin on multiple occasions.
And it's not only the OS updates that make you sweat. Some of our Reporting and ETL services make us tremble too.
Yes, Linus is one of those extremely rare individuals capable of such an endeavor and the great loto of the universal birthing made him popup in Finland.
If he had been born in China or Russia we would probably never have seen Linux come to light ( at least nor in the same manner).
The governments are showing us each and every day just how scared of their respective populations they truly are.
It's all about avoiding accountability at the highest levels, which may in fact lead to dissent but it's understandable when the govt no longer represents the people more than their personal interests .
"It does not matter how many people I hear ranting on soapboxes in the public square that I should kill people of sub-group" etc etc
Unfortunately the world does not work exactly like this, there are a vast amount of people who are easily led, that do not think for themselves and can be coerced into doing a multitude of bad things. Then there are the other people who do try and who do succeed in radicalising others and they are the most clearly the people that should be brought to justice.
I am quite happy that I can't find any images of myself on the web . There are other people with the same name , who do have images of themselves posted, so I should be a little safer against whatever wave of ransomware/blackmailing that the usual shitheads will come up with next.
Some people have a very large part of their lives posted , they really do need some education about web usage .
"Except the whole point of most of these neo-fascist censor bots"
Yup, exactly this, whether it be on the right or on the left.. neo-fascism doesn't really have bias, since it has spread it's wings to the both sides of the pendulum.
Neither side want's to accept that the other has an opinion.
"What's the worst that can happen?"
You get a new job only to find that a few weeks in that it's worse than the last one.. Better the devil you know.... The grass is always greener etc..
Unless your job/commute is an absolute nightmare think twice before making any rash decisions; your house/sanity might depend on it.
The 1st question should be , Why are you booting your PC so often.
Mines gets booted only if an update gives me no other choice, otherwise it stays on. I just switch the screens on and it's instantly ready. Work PC is exactly the same , although I need to keep it on for other reasons.
"commute times will be considered uncompensated working hours."
Your Boss doesn't choose where you live and I presume that you don't work during your commute..
Now imagine that you were the employer, what rights or privileges would you accord your staff ?
The only people that complain about working conditions are the those that have no responsibility, as soon as the shoe is on the other foot they change in opinion would be radical.
