Hmmm.

I can't help wondering how much information a singlet can convey, and whether or not they can be expected to arrive in the past in order. The question above regarding whether or not they would appear in the right place is also a good one IMHO.

Kinect connect rate outstrips Sony PS3 Move

Move and Sharpshooter

The Move seems to have drift issues when playing MAG and Killzone3. These are apparently more evident when combining the Move with the Sharpshooter. The sighting cursor can end up offset by as much as 1/4 of the screen's width from the point at which the Sharpshooter is aimed.

There are quite a few posts in the MAG, Killzone3 and PS3 forums regarding the calibration/drift problems people are having using the Move. No wonder the red EU model Sharp Shooter had the sighting ridge removed, as it would only draw attention to the woeful registration between the pointing of the device and the on-screen sight cursor.

It would actually be quite nice if one of the El Reg hacks could ask Sony to provide an explanation, as they don't seem to be responding to the communities on this issue.

Awesome

I've had the device for 10 days now, and it is awesome. It should be kept in mind that it comes from a heritage of internet tablets, and doesn't satisfy the cravings of smart-phone users who expect all the features of legacy phones, but offers such phenomenal potential that the device really should be considered as a Linux computer in your pocket.

In one word - awesome. In two - geek heaven.

WTF is this country called America?

fnordianslip

USAians Army?

Hmm. i remember playing a 'puter game called "America's Army", developed for the, er, "US Army". Now I'm confused who exactly the game portrayed, and who commissioned it.

Perhaps the USA should clarify the situation by pulling a Hitler and annexing all of their continental neighbours. Then they could call themselves something simpler.

8Mhz for a listener?

Blimey. That must be some awesome super high-fidelity, surround sound baby listener. 4kHz of spectrum ought to be enough to convey a voice channel, although I must admit I've never tried to hear what a screaming baby sounds like on a communications channel. Lets say 50kHz for good measure, including guard bands. 8MHz could carry a video channel, in fact probably 2, just about. There's either some very badly designed baby listeners or some confused reporting here.

Unusual

'The fear of abuse by individuals may not generally result in the protection of rights guaranteed under Community law being restricted for everyone," she said. "For that reason alone, a provision such as the one at issue cannot fall within the discretion of Member States."'

I wish that people with power would take this view more often, especially in respect of terrorism, paedophilia and other criminal activity.

Er, how about they decide to go for a WBS (Whole Body Sample), while you're still alive? That means they don't even have to bother arresting you, let alone convicting you ...

Is there a maximum size for DNA samples that they're allowed to take? I hope so.

Virgin Media calls foul on web speed testers

fnordianslip

@Iain

Lying huh?

Extract from virgin media email entitled "Important news about your broadband service" below:

---

How this affects you

We’ll be moderating the internet use on your account during peak times for the rest of this week (until Sunday night).

This means that from 4pm to midnight from Monday to Friday, and 10am to midnight on Saturday and Sunday your broadband service will be reduced from up to 8Mb to 80kbps (that’s just faster than a dial-up connection).

During these times you might want to stagger your use, so that you’re not doing everything in one go. Outside of these times, you’ll be able to use your service as normal, with speeds of up to 8Mb. If you’d like to find out a bit more about why we do this just click here.

Linux

50Mb/s ...

... as long as you're not dumb enough to actually use it.

If it really does go that fast, you'll be able to exceed your undisclosed acceptable usage limit within about 2 minutes of peak-time activity, probably by carrying out a speed-test, such as this one. You will then be rate limited down to 80kb/s for the rest of your life, or that week, whichever is shorter.

Anyway, as Virgin saw fit to steal from me that which I paid for, I jumped ship and have been using Enta for the past month, via UKFSN. Virgin can go and get fscked.

They even throttle access to their own mirrors

I'm trying to download a Ubuntu 8.04 disk image so I can install it as a favour to my housemate, who's promised to fix someones broken XP machine. Virgin are kindly rate-limiting me at the moment, so I thought I'd be clever and download the image from their Ubuntu mirror. It wasn't so clever though, as the download rate still sucked.

I found myself wondering if they throttle access to their own mirrors too, so I phoned up tech support (who conveniently enough are cheaper to abuse now) to check: firstly that I was being throttled, and secondly, that they are retarded enough to throttle access to their own mirrors. Tech supported pleaded guilty to both charges. I requested a MAC code for the 2nd time in two months (this time I'll use it) and was put on hold for 2 minutes before being told that they were now closed.

Gits. UKFSN here I come.

Intellectual, or industrial property

I thought 'we' typically referred to intellectual property, not industrial property in this context. Is this just bad translation, or is this just another case of individual's rights being usurped by big business.
