Windows 8 apps pass 100K, Windows 8 passes Vista

JimTopbloke

I have Win8 and I can tell you for free that I would not pias on 99.8% off the apps in ANY app store, most of them suck ball so badly, not because they are badly programmed, but because they are pointless wastes of time or are clones of other apps that do the same same same thing!

just check out the 'top 99 apps' they should have 4 or 5 stars but some only get 2 friggin stars!

I would much rather have 100 great apps than 100000 clogging up the store!

Tesla unveils battery-swapping tech for fast car charging

do the maths..

all the numbers in this article are near useless, how far will you get for your $50 battery swap compared to the equivalent $50 of gas?

javascript trouble

I just heard of a far more problematic issue regarding a very simple javascript method..

the java 'on click' method that changes the clicked on URL at the moment of clicking thereby redirecting what appears to be a valid link, even hovering over the link will show what you think is the correct destination but presto whammo! click it and it sends you elsewhere!

Hope my NoScript can cope with this problem..

NIMBY

Or NotInMyKitchen..

I would like to say, although I love a bit of tech, it has it's place and with the current trend in attacking embedded systems and infrastructure I for one will not be unnecessarily exposing my innards to dabbling from the outside world!

Data Abhors a Vacuum

The more space we create the more shit we find to fill it..

I used to be careful what I stored and where I stored it with 40Mb of drive space, not so now I have a couple of Tb to play with..

It's amazing what you don't actually need, and never ever use more than once (if that!)

The world has gone mad

What's wrong with a stern look, women are great at this and will turn most adult males into 5 year olds instantly..

or just wiggle a little finger in the direction of the offending chap..

To be fair I have a female mate who works in the tech world and she is always fighting for her rights to be treated equally, to the point where she is now really defensive / aggressive about almost any sexist comment

Maybe don't install that groovy pirated Android keyboard

Re: Android Heaven

The remote kill facility can remove the initial app, but what about anything installed by that first malicious infection?

Anyone who's ever had to clean up a virus or even a program that installs third party 'crapware' knows the problems here..

Re: Well...

do you not think windows 95 had enough well documented bugs to fry my system?

my point is it's hardly likely anyone would bother attacking a windows 95 system, not that you should go and install it right away and it would solve all your problems..

but imagine how fast it would run on a modern machine, not the Pentium II that it currently resides on ;)

I love windows 8

I was reluctant to buy a Win8 machine because of all the bad reviews but I'm bloody glad I did!

All you need to know are the shortcut keys WIN+D, ALT+TAB, WIN+TAB and ALT+F4 and you have yourself a great OS..

If you have never used for more than half an hour then stop moaning about what you know sod all about, once you do you will realise that it works well..

I have installed Ubuntu (sans Unity) and Windows XP on the same machine and I find myself gravitating more to Windows 8 than my previous Linux preference or the comfort of XP.

The task manager is vastly improved too so had done away with my needs for Process Explorer plus a few other tools I deemed essential in previous versions of windows..

Just be happy you have a choice people!

Re: Well...

I still use a Windows 95 computer at work, and it is the most stable machine I use!

It runs all the programs I need and I can get work done faster on this machine using ancient software than I can with all the bloatware and distractions on newer machines ;)

nor do I worry about virus infection because who is targeting Windows 95? No one!

more, more, more, how do you like it!

Unless your planning on having a bionic eye or two fitted then all this super-duper-mega-ultra hi resolution is pretty pointless for my money, you just adapt to what your watching, and your brain filters out all the stuff it doesn't need, unless you are scrutinising a portion of the picture then there are hardly any benefits to be had, the big picture (so to say) looks as good at 720p as it does at 1080p on a 42" telly!

SMS costs more than using Hubble Space Telescope

JimTopbloke

the evil than men do...

I don't object to paying to send an SMS, because I am getting something for my money, I will pay for something that has a tangible benefit to me, like my lovely Sky+

However I do object to having to pay a minimum call charge when my phone instantly connects to an answering service without a seconds delay! this is daylight robbery!

What happened to the couple of rings in a different tone that would allow you to hang up? I have wasted (estimate!) over 50 of my hard earned quids on bugger all!

Paying for something I get is fine, no one is forcing me to use the service, paying 10p for what would be an engaged tone if those answering machines didn't get you... darn, at least highwaymen wore a mask!

The big wide world would stop spinning if businesses didn't make a profit, but sheer thievery!
