They did it to themselves...

They allowed Microsoft and Intel to dictate what they were allowed to sell... I paid about $350 for one of the early Acer Aspire Ones... I like it. I do not need the 160GB hard drive and use very little of it. What I want is MORE than the 7 1/2 hr battery life that I can already squeeze out of it AND a vertical resolution that is better than 600 pixels... Apparently nobody is "brave" enough to sell one without charging over $400 for it. I do NOT need Windows and I do NOT need Intel. I'd be perfectly happy with an Arm-based netbook - kind of like the one Asus "apologized" to Microsoft for demonstrating more than a year ago... Where is it you GUTLESS VENDORS???

Aspire One...

I really like the Acer Aspire One 10" with 6 cell 5800mh battery I have. Unfortunately the promised 6cell Linux version of the netbook never quite arrived so I ended up buying the XP version. (I loaded Fedora on it and have been quite happy with its performance.) Especially the 7.5 hr battery life.

For me to get another Acer netbook it would have to provide 8+ hr battery life, a vertical display resolution higher than 600, and Linux instead of some version of Windows would definitely help tip the scales toward upgrading... (The only reason I got the last one with XP is reports that Microsoft hand reduced OEM cost to as low as $5 each in an attempt to "win" the market back from Linux.)

Why the "justice department" does not prevent the Microsoft monopoly from "rice gouging" or keep Intel/Microsoft from strong-arming vendors into providing only low-RAM, low resolution display versions of netbook is also disturbing...

What can I say? - We in the US have the best government that money can buy... (Too bad only some of us seem to believe our representation should not be for sale...)

Might be QT related?

Nokia bought out TrollTech not too long ago... The QT toolkit is one of the BEST cross-platform development frameworks out there... (How this fits in I'm not yet sure...)

I recently (about 5 months ago) bought a 42" Vizio FULL HD from CostCo in California for about $550...

OGG support?

The only thing that keeps me from getting the iPod Classic 160Gig is the lack of OGG support. The first player to offer OGG support and similar storage capacity gets my money...

Time will tell...

I was so busy watching the UMPC space that I almost missed the fact that it was finally possible to buy a laptop with Linux preloaded for less than a comparably equipped Windows machine without having to pay a "Microsoft Tax!"

I received my $379 Everex gBook about a week ago and am very happy with it. (I do have to admit I replaced the supplied gOS with Ubuntu 8.04 the first day I had it)

I also bought 2Gig of RAM to upgrade it for about $50 which should show up in the next several days.

Hopefully by the time all the Linux based UMPC options show up in the next couple months or so I will be able to pick which one I'd like to take with me on motorcycle road trips, camping, etc...

The cell phone, even though it has internet access, is just too tiny a display and too big a hassle to try and "type" stuff into directly...

I bought laptop because of Linux...

I finally ordered a laptop last week (the gbook from walmart for $379) I am almost as opposed to walmart as I am the Microsoft Tax but after many years of delaying a laptop / notebook purchase because of refusing to support Microsoft and their dirty tactics I could finally buy a laptop / notebook without financially supporting them. (I know that high-end laptops have been available for quite a while with Linux instead of Windows but this seems to be the first I found that provides the economies of scale / mass market without being subject to the MS Tax...)

I am also keeping my eye on the developments with the EEE 901, the MSI Wind, Everex Cloudbook, and Acer Aspire lines...
