Yet more American Christian rubbish

I've noticed with the History Channel they started with perfectly sensible stuff about Greece, Rome, even some rational biblical period investigation stories (Dead Sea scrolls etc) but they now seem to have been infiltrated by the Southern Baptist nut job type of programming, like programs about the Devil or the end of days where it degenerates into people talking about the Rapture as if it's a forgone conclusion and just a few years away, and programs about biblical characters where they are described more like latter day superheroes and accepting everything in the Bible without questioning, rather than giving a fact based assessment as in "this is what we know archeologically" etc.

Much of the Christian religions beliefs are proven to come from other Middle Eastern cultures, the god Ra was known as "the way the truth and the light" and the "Good Shepherd", and the sins mentioned in the Ten Commandments appear in the Egyptian Book of the dead.

Not a great location

As stated there are already a fair number of Mac outlets in Amsterdam, (as a matter of fact it's easier to find a Mac than a PC), so I don't see what Apple are trying to achieve, it would have been far better to get something in the centre if they are going to try to compete with the other Mac retailers who already seem to stock most of the newer products

Slovakian cannibal's dinner calls in cops

Bob Foster
Happy

Actually...

The IT crowd episode was heavily based on the German cannibal incident, apparently even the "Oceans Eleven" part came from that, someone before the eventual victim was killed went to see this guy as a potential meal, and then bottled out, at which point the cannibal asked if he wanted to watch a movie, to which he agreed and it was ....."Oceans Eleven"

Saw an interview with the IT Crowd director (think it's on the DVD extras) where he was saying he couldn't believe someone sat down to watch a movie with someone who earlier had planned to kill and eat him

Nope not the only grey beard!

My first Netware system was running Advanced Netware 86 on an original IBM ATX with two IBM PC's (twin floppy) as workstations.

To be fair the IT department had told my department it was obsolete before they bought it (1987) but they went ahead anyway, I remember one of my first tasks was getting an upgrade to Netware 286, and a Compaq server with duplexed hard drives (might have been 386 processor, cant remember now but I was really in love with it at the time!).

I actually got to like the compilation process, it kind of gave you "Dark Art" powers that others would ohhh and ahhh at, the actual process itself I remember was fairly straightforward.

Installation got silly in later versions think one version had 43 disks in the install set, I remember one re-seller telling me they got calls from users all the time saying "It's asked me to reinsert the same disks about 5-6 times", and he'd reply "that's ok just keep going!" lmao!

A brief trawl through the web produced the following:

An extract from a sermon preached by Peter the Hermit in A.D. 1274:

"The world is passing through troublesome times. The young people of

today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for

parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as

if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is

foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest

and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."

Attributed quote of Plato (428– 348 BC), complaining to Socrates, in ancient Greece:

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

Hesiod (around 700 BC.):

“I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise and impatient of restraint.”

[Note: the word "wise" above as used by Hesiod actually means "smartass". Kind of like derogatorily saying today someone is a "wiseguy".

McKinnon family welcomes extradition treaty review

Bob Foster
Thumb Down

Happened before

McKinnon is hardly a super hacker, as a matter of fact his method was embarrassingly simple something the average script kiddie could do, however the problem is the US prosecutors is their tendency to hype the seriousness of the crime.

I remember an interview with Kevin Mitnik where he said the prosecutors alleged at his trial that he had the skills to launch nuclear weapons using just a mobile phone, and as a result he was banned from using mobile phones or computers for years afterwards, despite the fact the whole story was fanciful garbage (Apparently the prosecutors mentioned the movie "War Games" which shows the depth and professionalism of their research!).

We also have the case of the British woman on death row in Texas, the prosecution case for which defies belief.

American prosecutors seem to construct elaborate fantasies to convey the absolute worst image of the person concerned regardless of the facts.

Mr McKinnon may not be blameless but he doesn't deserve the shafting the American legal system will give him should he be extradited.

Anti Terrorist usage

Read last year Indian Special forces where developing non lethal grenades for anti terrorist use containing powder from their most powerful chili's.

Worked somewhere last year where the guys were into how "hot can you get a chilli" one up manship, until someone brought in some Dorset Nagas. The expressions and after effects of them tasting microscopic specs of these raw is a sight I will always remember fondly, and as for the chilli produced from them well I don't think anyone got past a couple of mouthfulls lmao

As a frequent flier I already have to endure running the gauntlet past the yellow shirted job centre rejects parroting "have you got any liquids, creams, wall filler, swarfega, KY Jelly in your luggage? ", before having to half strip for the sodding x ray machines, with an obligatory feel up by a 250lb former rugby player, and then, just when you think your safe, they swoop on you again and demand you take your shoes off for yet another scan.

Now will be added to this delightful mix the inevitable mix up of my traveling patterns with a known Columbian drug mule!! (Can hear the rubber gloves snapping now ouch!)

Mind you, if there is a hell when you die boiling lava and red hot irons will be a cinch compared to what they put you through at the average UK airport.

don't assume malice where incompetence will do just as well

Apart from being a good generator of revenue, this also seems to be a gigantic arse covering exercise.

I've noticed this pattern with Nu Labor, something shocking occurs, the media discuss a multitude of ways it could have been avoided, happily filling all the air time they now have to fill, then the cretin, oops sorry, minister responsible introduces new legislation or process to say "we've got it covered".

Look at shootings, ban gun's and the problems disappeared, and Nu Labor have "acted decisively" to eradicate the problem -NOT!

Typical crap from a government that are controlled pretty much totally by the media and sound bite journalism
