My contract would also have been ending in december had I not got out of it.

3 changed the terms of their "3 like home" service earlier this year, meaning that previously where they allowed you to travel to the republic of ireland and some other european countries and get charged as if you were at home, now they charge roaming costs and so forth.

This is in fact a breach of their contract to you, and I was able to get out of my contract because of this. If you call foul over this, I suspect you will relatively easily get out too.

Essentially, the pro-ID card arguments were so lame and so few in number that the admins had to play devil's advocate right from the start - and even then, they got destroyed.

If you look through the forums, you'll find hundreds of posts, mostly very well written and intelligent, dissecting ID cards and their problems, and making any pro-ID posts look childish by comparison. I don't think they expected that young people had the interest or the brains to have had an informed opinion on the matter...

Steve - funny that, as I have exactly that problem using a NETGEAR router. The built in modem seems to stop responding randomly under lots of simultaneous connections. Hasn't happened for about a fortnight, but sometimes it happens 3 times within an hour.

Best router I've ever used was a Linksys. (cue someone saying what I've just said about Linksys gear)

I'm an avid Opera user, but this complaint is just getting silly.

A modern OS has to include some basic functionality out of the box these days, and with the Internet so important, a browser is obviously top of that list. The basic components of IE are used within Windows to render web content, and some programs explicitly rely on it to function. Linux is much the same, using whatever component it is these days (KHTML?). In both OS, you remove these components and something won't work, simple as that. Despite IE's shortcomings, it is extremely useful to different people for different reasons, so why would you want to remove IE completely by default?

Anyway - nothing prevents an OEM or PC manufacturer from putting an alternative browser on if they so wish. It's perfectly likely that Google will push for exactly that, once Chrome has fully matured. But OEM's will only put the extra effort in if they're getting paid to do so - which is why IE remains the default.

You as a user also have the choice. Since XP, Windows has had prominent "default programs" links in control panel/start menu, where you can explicitly set it so IE is not used. If you want to use FireFox for everything web related, nothing is stopping you from ever having to use IE again. Same with WMP, photo viewer, Windows Defender, Windows Mail, WIndows Firewall....etc..etc... There is nothing to stop these never being used again.

Opera is whining and moaning as a result of simple layman behaviour - IE is 'good enough', and therefore most people won't bother changing it. It's the same with Safari on Mac, and whatever browser is thrown into your Linux distro, there is no difference. Opera desktop use is disappointingly low - but this will do nothing to change that, people will only resent them for it.

PS. to all the fools claiming you can do fine without a browser ("WGET is like, so easy!"), you need to get out more and meet the %80+ of the population who wouldn't have the faintest clue where to even begin. For the vast majority of computer users, a pre-installed browser is an absolute neccessity. For the rest of us, it would just be a pain, WGET or not.

Windows does have several backup options

Vista has a backup and restore center, which can be found in control panel. Windows 7 has expanded this further and made it better, outlined in the link below:

AFAIK, you can back up to optical media, hard disks, and network folders, and schedule it however often you want. You can also back up your system image in the process, so it isn't just your user files/data.

There's also Windows Home Server, which offers a whole host of options too.

I'm not sure if any of the windows options have the capability of storing files from different dates, but otherwise, it does exactly the same job as Time Machine.

Tiscali is piss poor

My parents have Tiscali at home. It's truly awful.

During the day the speed can be erratic, and in the early evening it can just completely grind to a halt. They seem to block all bittorrent traffic, 24/7, unless its encrypted, in which case it magically springs to life. USENET is totally unusable/blocked until about midnight, and then I get a trickle of a connection till about 7am. HTTP and FTP is just about acceptable, but for a 2mb connection, the speeds are lame.

That said, BT can phuck off - I don't see how they're any better, and Tiscali are right to complain about them. If it were my choice, I wouldn't be near either of them

Silly people...

I routinely download the cracked exe for every single game I buy. It saves me having to take the CD's around with me, and it means they even load up quicker. I honestly don't know why the still include CD checks - all it does is inconvenience the user.
