Dumb

Marketing platform aside there comes a point when it is less costly to market a new technology rather then continue to market an old one. Hybrids would have to get very cheap, very quickly to have some sort of market before SSD caught up.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Done already?

If not the Indian government certainly the Indian people have done some part in acquiring new technology and making it available to the rest of the world.

One could see this everywhere with the pirated copies of Windows almost everywhere.

Benign Internet overlords

Oh, where would we be without our appoint Internet overlords at ICANN('t)?

They sure deserve that kickback, err bonus money, for their service to the rich and powerful.

Good ole' USA

Some insurers here are already offering <voluntary> tracking with the offer of possible reduced insurance costs. It was a few years ago in Canada that it became public information that newer cars were coming with black-boxes that kept track of engine speed, direction etc. and whose information was available to the prosecution. Built in cell-based roadside assistance has also been used to enforce repossession by remotely disabling the afflicted vehicle and has been used in eavesdropping.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Yawn...

Haven't they heard of this thing they call the "NetBook"?

Eduard Coli

No surprises

This must be that "Industrial Military Complex" that Eisenhower (and I'm sure others) have talked about.

Eduard Coli
Big Brother

Why not?

I'm sure the fledgling MiniTru's and would be totalitarian states would love to get a chance to try a technology designed by an old school'er like the PRC.

Eduard Coli
Childcatcher

Fleas or bankers?

These could be the ancestors to mankind's greatest blood suckers, investment bankers.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Evil empire

They saw how AT&T was caught, guilty and made not guilty by changing the law.

This is just an attempt to replicate that across an industry.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Hot air

Aside from investment wonks who cares about the hot air way up there?

Eduard Coli
Gimp

No secret

What secret?

The PRC has said to the media before that they would like America to sell its war tech.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Politics

It is hard to argue with the recidivism rate of capital punishment, the dead generally are not repeat offenders, the undead might though.

The justice system in the US and I'm sure elsewhere has failed many times to insulate the case from the politics of the time and what is justice to some is class warfare to others.

Perhaps they should be made to work a job until they have paid back the losses of the victim plus interest or maybe trial by combat.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Not just labor

The PRC is a choice source not just for the labor and the culture of bribery but also because of the lax/non-existent environmental laws.

This play well into Rare Earths. They are not so rare and if you process ore for one you can get them all. This processing does however produce a large amount of toxic byproducts which would incur a large expense to clean up if they were processed in a sane country.

Learn to speak Mandarin

The PLA had fought a couple of proxy wars with the US with limited success and had generally assumed they would continue that success until they saw how technology had changed with how quickly Saddam's army had dissolved.

Weakening the US and I'm sure elsewhere economically with counterfeit currency and a pegged yuan.

"Opening" the domestic market to "Contained Capitalism" by inviting American and European manufacturing and getting them hooked on cheap labor and lax safety and environmental policies gave the PLA access to improved technology and method.

Both above and below board bribery, er, campaign contributions kept American and possibly European politicians from enacting legislation or policy against PRC interests.

Financing and helping Chinese nationals to gain access to higher education especially to technical schools brings home access to the newest tech innovations and research.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Why not?

It's not his money.

The scummier side of investment banking like venture capital and hedge funds do not care about hot air bubbles like Facebook because in the end it is the taxpayer that gets soaked.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Amazing!, AOL continues to be EVIL right into the hole

Only AOL could prove that it is still evil on it's deathbed by re-arming one of the biggest patent trolls in IT.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

FaceThis

Just more evidence of how much of the Face Book phenomenon is hot air.

George Lucus pudu

Nothing personal against George as he has more money so that makes him more right, right?

Star Wars while an entertaining movie and a good earner is really space opera and not science fiction. All George did was dressed old flesh on new bones. The studios appreaciated it so much that they tapped Dino for the sequal. George had to buy his way back in and personally I'm not sure it was for the better.

Real sci-fi often gets panned by critics, but what do they know?

The Alien franchise has benefited from it's ability to mutate like the monster that the series is based around. It even made James Cameron look good.

Eduard Coli

"Only suspected terrorists, paedophiles or serious criminals will be investigated," said the Home Secretary.

That is hardly any way to talk about our dear MPs!

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Stupid

Seems though that people, particuarly famous people should not use a phone to take blue pictures.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Ho hum

There go all of those outsourcing savings...

Wait, they already left as executie bonuses.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

ARM this

M$ only hope is to heavily subsidize WOA.

This is how they are keeping Linux off of cheap pee-cees.

If they try to charge "slate" pricing then punters will stump for the more mature (sic) and better supported IOS or go low, as in price, and go Droid.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

So what?

Funny that, all of this focus on unemployment in the States yet the two elephants on the dance floor Outsourcing and VISA abuse get no mention in the commodity media.

Despite the unemployment situation the VISA caps are still being raised and there are many more different kinds of VISA with overlapping access and outsourcing still continues to drain real jobs out of the US.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Finish it

The title of this could have been finished with "At the behest of Microsoft".

My guess is that the license discount given to HP and other favored resellers by M$ far outgweigh the profit made even on a popular non-Windows tablet.

That or the history of glue sniffing continues at HP's executive level.

Eduard Coli
FAIL

Own this

That is the rub, recalling that the studios (and Microsoft) said sometime ago that delivery media not withstanding, you are buying a limited use license and nothing more.

This is a system about rights denial and if it ever gets common acceptance than I'm sure that it is designed to have that license for use amended remotely and without notice.

Eduard Coli
FAIL

Who cares?

M$' only chance is to heavily subsidize (also called anti-competitive behavior by some, like judges for instance) as this is how they have kept Linux away from the VARs for the most part.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

What's it "really" about

This is really about tyres and not fondleslabs, no?

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Paper tiger

It is probable that this kind of security breakdown has happened and is happening at all of those companies that sought to make room in the budget for ever increasing executive bonuses by outsourcing IT and by hiring VISA workers with dubious at best credentials.

The fact is that the black hats are better compensated whether they are PRCs cyberattack group in the PLA or cowboys looking for something to sell.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

President?

Isn't the Chairman of the CPC the man in charge?

Eduard Coli
Gimp

What a bunch of *s

What a power grab.

If they want to exclude the public from owning names in this TLD let them build their own Internet as the one they want to do this on is paid for by us.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

SSDD

This really should not surprise anyone as "fake" lawsuits are part or the PRCs sabre rattling/negotiation bag of tricks.

Any business that uses PRC slave labor assumes this risk.

Stock holders and regulators should consider this when the execs are looking to move manufacturing abroad to make more room in the budget for bigger bonuses.

Eduard Coli

ICANN't stand it anymore

ICANN has mutated into the business end of an industry choked by a club of well funded and well connected insiders.

They should and need to be shown the Sherman Act.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Wha?

As if we needed further proof that American democracy has devolved into oligarchy.

Eduard Coli
Facepalm

Ugg

Please M$ do us all a favor and stop with the half assed, brain dead copies of other peoples file systems.

You know it won't work, not at least until version 3 with version 5 being the one that everyone expected in version 1.

All you have to do is integrate ZFS and even the license still lets you stay kind of closed source.

Copy Apple if you must.

Eduard Coli
Megaphone

Suits

Guess M$ is starting to feel cocky because they have not been sued in awhile, or is desperate.

Anyone for a new class action suit barring the use of signing as anti-competitive and in violation of earlier agreements from the last time M$ was found to be a illegal monopoly?

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Mao must be rolling

The cost of doing bribery, err business is going up in the good old PRC.

R Reagan had a system like this too.

He owned practically worthless desert property and when someone needed a favor from Ronnie they would pay an overly large amount for some of his desert acreage.

Of course they needed a partner.

The PRC requires foreign business operators to take on a Chinese partner to have any kind of operation on the mainland.

Wonder if they also have a party member on the board too?

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Mirror, mirror

Perhaps when Go Daddy looks in the mirror they see AOL or maybe just a horses ass.

Eduard Coli
FAIL

Dancing

Everyone is dancing around the 800 lbs. (~57 st.) burning gorilla in the room.

There would be Hadoop or insert tech of the day here engineers if punters felt there would be demand for those skills.

Since the gilded executives that run our fair oligarchy fell in love with cheap labor no matter what the actual cost is, it became apparent to anyone with eyes that there was no future in any IT major for anyone unfortunate enough to be born in the West.

You want tech talent?

Show the people working at it that you are not going to give their job away to a visa holder with made up skills because his head shop is cheap and you can take it off your taxes.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Load of crap

Every once in a while some business fascist operation like this one comes out with these so they can be cited by a lobbyist looking to push more slave labor into the US.

If anything it is the minority leg up that creates crap education.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Who cares?

Who cares about ARM support?

M$ used to support RiSC, Alpha and after killing that off more recently killed Itanic (Itanium) support if you wanted to call it that.

M$ always makes the Intel alternative or in the case of Itanic the non-mainstream processor alternative second class in os maintenance.

Eduard Coli

It's the New Economy

Pres. Eisenhower had a few things to say about this kind of thing during his farewell address in 1961.

<snip> "This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. . . .Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. . . . In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

Eduard Coli

That time of the year again

Bonus checks must have cleared and maybe even a few crumbs left to actually make a product!

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Blah

No it's not a panacea but an excuse for large companies to dosh it on the taxpayer.

Eduard Coli

Re-read

Should read something like:

The World Bank, heavily funded by US government, ergo the middle class (rich folks don't pay taxes in the US) and Intel, large multinational that benefits heavily from tax cuts owned by aforementioned rich folks and thus supported by same middle class tax payers, especially around bonus time, pay to train cheap, exploitable labor from around the world.

Q: What's better than a tax incentive to outsource?

A: Getting them to pay for their own replacements.

Eduard Coli
Big Brother

Nothing new under the sun

Any new Internet protocol or fiddling with existing protocols invites infection on that protocol with content management.

Look at IPv.6, in IP6 land they will know who you are and what you are doing with your packets.

It started off as a innocent solution to the running out of addressing thing and mutated into a IP lawyers wet dream.

Eduard Coli
Gimp

Derigueur

Just another attempt to push gun control by other means.

Like other lightning rod issues in the US special interests try to mix topics.

Like a Wall street banker crafting a CDO they take a issue that has little traction and try to wrap it into some other strong emotional issue. In this case it is mixing gun control with the power of physicians to advise. For other examples. look at abortion, that mixing women's rights and a medical procedure.

Eduard Coli
Trollface

A turd by another name

This is another outsourcing fantasy.

You know the one, where outsourcing actually works and the client does not get screwed by the overages and the system actually does what it says on the can without constantly falling down.

Eduard Coli
Thumb Down

No surprises really

These are part of the tail end effects of outsourcing and work VISA abuse.

Eduard Coli
Facepalm

Apple supports racists?

What a stupendously dumb idea.

Mugabe needs to be go away before Zimbabwe can be helped.

Eduard Coli

ICANN't stand it anymore

The public paid for the Internet.

Why should this group of special interests and less than privacy friendly government get to act like they do?
