I am a 10mb subscriber and hardly ever get anything significantly less than that. Have been with them for something like 8 years now. I started with 150k and every now and again get a speed hike.
Have recently had the "jitter" problems in our area though, loads of short term (couple of seconds) disconnects.
Internet was out for most of Saturday afternoon down this way (border of Croydon and Bromley). When I called Virgin Media I was told it was a fault in the area and they offered to put £10 credit on my account for the hassle.
They answered almost immediately so I do not think there was a huge amount of calls at that point.
When did codenames become publicity tools? (Desert Shield maybe)
The proper way to use a codename for military purposes is to maintain a central list of "random" codenames. When someone wants a codename for an operation they simply get assigned the next name on the list.
In particular you should never be able to infer anything about an operation from its codename.

Google probably had IE6 installed for the same reason we do. IE6 is one of our officially supported browsers and we need to have it installed to support it. People on IE6 have little or no choice. IE6 makes up 12 - 15% of our traffic in the week and almost nothing over weekends. This indicates that they use IE6 at work and something else at home. They are not stupid, they are just using what they have available.
There is a reason this is one of those enduring weapons... Effective and really hard to get wrong.

In the desert (Iraq) where there is little cover aircraft reign supreme, but as the Angolans (and their Cuban pilots in MIG 23's) found out in the bush war in the 70s/80s, aircraft superiority is pretty useless when there is thick cover available for your ground forces to hide in.
Not all wars (conventional or otherwise) will be fought in the desert, you need a balanced force.

Hmm - only thing I use bittorrent for is warcraft updates. These happen over a week or 2 before the patch, so we probably wont even notice the throttling.
I think the problem is more an expectation one. If you sell 'unlimited' broadband (in large print) and then put a bunch of restrictions in the small print people will complain (rightly).
If Virgin (and others) were more upfront about what they are selling there would be no problem at all.
