Nokia N900 Linux smartphone

Moving to Qt

Maemo 5 is GTK based, the next version will use Qt.

The bug is supposed to only affect recent 3 sims, mine is about a year old, so must be one of the first accepted ones. You can still use the device except for the functions that require the sim, at the moment I am using a vodafone PAYG sim. The issue has been fixed in the internal development version, it is just a case of waiting for it to be released. (Bug Report here :https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5315 ).

mhj

It is mozilla based

It is MicroB, the version of FF for mobile devices. There were a couple of webkit browsers for the Maemo 4 devices, we will have to see if they are ported.

Thumb Up

I have one, and it's good.

Mine arrived this morning. Out of the box, a major showstopper is that it wouldn't recognise my 3 sim card, but apparently this is fixed in the internal dev versions, it is just a case of waiting for it to be released. The software on the device is a good first release (Of Maemo 5), there are a few things that need work.Overall it is stable and responsive. I could play youtube videos with no stuttering (I'm running the 42.11 fw.

The big issue is the maps application, trying to get map data onto the device is a pain at the moment, nowhere near as good as the old wayfinder app for the N800/N810.

I am very happy with the device, it has combined the features from my N95 and N800 into one handy brick.

What?

"Very concerned that enabling VT would expose our systems to malicious code that could go very deep in the Operating System structure of the PC and completely disable the latter."

That's Bollocks.

What about connection meddling?

It doesn't matter if Virgin is twice the speed of the others, if you actually use it then it will throttled to death.

Exactly, the Ice bank system, now replaced with a conventional chiller type arrangement.

@Jon Connell

The 'Tesco special' machines use pretty much the same components as a macbook ;).

The real credit has to go to intel for the pentium m/core series of CPU's. I remember P4 notebooks, with battery life of half an hour and hot enough to fry eggs.

BBC seen to yield over website snooping

mhj

@AC 14:22

No, those ads use your IP that they get, BBC is nothing to do with it. The mechanism they use to do this is not entirely accurate, which can lead to some strange locations that are nowhere near you.

Obviously, I only know this from researching how online advertising works...

'netbooks' ARE useful.

@pete

Have you actually used one? Many come with that well know and loved OS that is XP. They are perfectly speedy and incredibly usable for the everyday user. I had one of the first 701 EEE;s. Yes, the screen was too small, but that has been address in later versions. It was far more portable than my 12" IBM ultraportable. I could not afford a conventional subnotebook, which are massively expensive. I am currently looking at one of the new crop as a replacement for the aforementioned IBM, as they are about as powerful, the batteries last longer and are more portable.

They perform adequately for web/word processing tasks that ordinary people actually do.

Fine and peachy for me.

Upgrade on a precision workstation with Nvidia quadro card, worked perfectly and all my printers worked as soon as I plugged them in.

IBM X40 fresh install due to a hard drive replacement- now running off a 133X compact flash card. It's usable, but it is a bit slow sometimes -Probably needs a touch more ram as there is no swap space. Faster CF would help too, but they are expensive. Still feels faster than the previous release on it though.

So my experience has been pretty much perfect. This was on the release day too.

You will never get any form of voip on the Ipod touch, because then it competes with the iphone...
