My HP laptop is a hybrid affair, discrett 4200 and 5400HD for a bit more oomph. Linux supplied drivers always seem to think I just have the 4200. The latest Catalyst from AMD works properly and lets me choose which to use. Win 7 no problems but XP is completely unsuported. No hybrid drivers for XP abailable and the normal 5400 driver fails to install.
Need help
"88 percent of respondents said they are willing to seek professional help to treat smut addicition, but would prefer to do it online"
....so that they can watch more porn.
The networks already do this, it usually get spotted fairly quickly and then you see there are no seeds on a new torrent.
People grabbing torrents tend to download from someone who's built up a reputation for providing consistent seeds that are good.
Master Dick ?
If we get software to recognise Dick, will it recognize Bruce Wayne as well ?
Custom Speccy anyone ?
My first spectrum was a 16k jobbie bought my my stepfather for "school work" *cough*
I save ages to buy an upgrade to 48k which meant putting in new ram chips. My very first hardware upgrade, that actually worked out cheaper than buying the 48k machine in the first place.
Later I had a plus 2 then a disciple disk drive before finally getting a plus 3 in about 1991/92 secondhand with interface 1 and microdrives. Of course it would only work properly in 48k mode as the +2a and +3 were different internally so a friend of mine converted it to a proper 128 by piggybacking a 128 rom and a switch so I could use it as either. It was possible to boot up as a 128,load a program from microdrive, then flip to save it onto the internal +3 drive. Later he added a 720k PC drive that I had working with the plus D from Datel, again, setting it up to switch and be seen as the A: drive instead of B:. I also had a multiface3 unit that meant I could convert all my games to disk. The final addition he did was to add a 3.5 inch jack to the top left of the case with the psuedo stereo modification that many demoscene coders were using, ACB stereo which worked brilliantly.
I even got an old Cub monitor used originally with a BBC and had a scart lead made up for a better picture on a telly.
Apart from the original 16k rubber keyed version, which got nicked everything else was done on the cheap second hand.
Now,I'm emulating the speccy on my android phone and on my laptop, but still have a ZX81 and a Plus3 in the cupboard.
Just got this from Getjar
And it's pretty good.
Radio 1 and 2 plus a couple of local radio stations and one european rock station /i listened to while travelling and it's working great.
Beats xiaalive which I used up till now and only keep for full shoutcast capability.
Met office aint the only fruit.
So stuff them. Just use a widget from another provider. there's plenty of them.
The one on my google page isn't from the met office, and the only weather gadget I use on my linux system isn't either.
I feel the same as K 4, that's a ridiculous outlay for a tablet of this size, even if it's spread over 2 years. Plus you'd have to get a larger memory card.
And why is the reviewer complaining about the lack of Orange apps. Having had a ZTE Blade and numerous SPV phones loaded down with Orange bloatware, it's a plus point to not have them.
Now..if this comes out on PAYG at a reasonable price I might be tempted.
cheaper calls
Easiest option before going abroad is make sure your phones unlocked before you go and get a local sim card. Orange in romania is considerably cheaper than Orange in the UK for example (7 euro for 2500 calls/sms on Orange & 120 mins international to mobile and landlines, even comes with 100mb data)
I can't understand why people don't do this and just send a text saying "I'm on this number for the next xx weeks". The person at home will pay more, but still less than the roaming costs usually, especially in europe.
No offence intended ?
Tony, I thank you for your reply, but I think the issue here that some have taken, is that while no offence IS intended, for many people the use of Swear words CAN be offensive.
Rather than saying, your readers shouldn't take offence wouldn't it be better to take the stance that this could cause offence given the nature of the app ?
Case in point - The Viz app that gives out quotes of one of the characters. That I found very funny because it was in keeping with the nature of the app, and entirely expected.
I love Viz, I choose to read Viz, any article that is about Viz I would assume I may see swearing, crass humour etc, but not in this case. Not for an app that is basically just a simple scan to text converter.
not the point.
When I turn on late night comedy or goto a live show, I expect I'll hear swear words for comedic effect.
I know what the Onion is, I have it in my bookmarks, when I want to see it, I see it.
This was an app review. It's unwarranted and unnecessary here.
Call me a prude if you like, this seems like a great app, but I think I'd have enjoyed the review more if you hadn't used something with so many F words in it.
I don't particularly use profanity in day to day life and don't see any need to have it shoved in front of me on the written page.
music storage.
As most people use storage media for tunes it seems like an ample amount of memory for games and apps.
I don't know anyone who keeps music on internal memory unless they don't have an option of using memory cards.
Mountains out of molehills.
While I'm not a fanboy (I use win 7 as well) most people in my LuG don't give a hoot, let alone being angry about Unity,KDE or Gnome 3.
You either like it or you don't. Just use a different window manager or a different distro.
Same happened with Win ME and Vista, that's why so many stick with XP.
Go Weather - free, accurate and looks just as good with themes, widgets and animated live wallpapers.
Also supports location via GPS in case the town your in isn't in it's database.
Mate or MGSE ?
It seems that you're reporting Mate is definite, yet I read it to be that while MGSE is being included the final descision to include MATE on the RC hasn't been made yet.
Only if they succeed in making it work correctly will it be on there.
mine dropped as well at almost the same time. Just co-incidence perhaps.
The P910 was just brilliant. I used it for a long time with tom tom on it and a gps receiver I got really cheap from ebay. Perfect size for the pocket. Very themable and I had a nifty app to send messages to anyone silly enough to leave bluetooth on all the time with no security.
Msn ran perfect with a 3rd party program as well and a fantastic Zx Spectrum emulator.
I eventually sold it to get a Palm T3 hooked up to a WM6 handset before moving on to Android.
I was lucky that I worked for a phone company who provided my P910 for free.
Wish I'd kept it.
ok,I'll correct you.
It's been out on android for months. I got my San Fran in February and had it installed then.
Tidbit or titbit ? Depends where you're from. In the US and canada tidbit is more common. Neither is wrong.
Based in Ireland ? Really ? With their headquarters being in California ?
hosts files
It was all very well getting instructions to edit hosts files with the IP but that only worked to get onto the site, couldn't access any comments and a lot of pages on the reg were still unable to resolve, even after the hosts edit. I was able to do some basic reading using google cache and muttering about how everyone else seemed to be able to get on with no problems.
Awful Orange UI
The first thing I did, literally within an hour of unboxing my San Francisco was to put the Jellyfish rom on and LauncherPro.
I don't care about the warranty, as long as I can turn it on I can restore the default if I need to.
It transformed the phone (I knew what the Orange rom was like allready).
I've thought about Cyanogen but I'm quite happy with how my handset performs currently and watch flash video and iplayer using the Skyfire browser.
Not for Arm6
Brilliant except they stated they won't develop Firefox mobile version for any android device under Arm7 despite many models still being sold using the arm6 chip (ZTE Blade etc)
I'll stick with Skyfire on my mobile devices which will also play flash video.
I grok
Grok and grokked, from Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Henlein.
Saw this in europe a while ago
And thought, a phone with an facebook button ? Everyone thought is was stupid.
Didn't realise it was Android with a touch screen though which makes it more tempting. But if the layout effects widgets it would surely be even worse with games.
Stick with my San Francisco running 2.2 for now.
cheats
The original version needed 6031769 for the any level cheat but typewriter in the software projects version.
You only needed pokes for infinite lives. 35136,0 for the spectrum or MM running obn a speccy emulator.
Zonealarm ?
@Jades - huh ? I've been using FF4 with Zonealarm since the release candidates and no problems at all.
Working fine here on Win7 and XP with ZA installed.
not a 24 hour day
Not promoting either view but day isn't 24 hours in the creation accounts. Think more of "in my day" or "days of our forefathers".
In other words, a time period.
all Poweramp does plus..
Lyrics, DSP, search for album art and save lyrics for offline playback:
PlayerPro
only Arm7 ?
Just like Flash, Google earth etc, unless you have an ARM7 processor (the hugely popular ZTE Blade/Orange San Francisco are ARM6) then it won't work.
This is why it isn't in the app market if you don't have an Arm7 device.
There is an unstable arm6 Fennec available but isn't working and they tell you that it's basically not even a good idea to try.
Nice one Mozilla.
no marketplace-no sale
Any android phone or tablet will make a good media player so saying this is good if just viewed as a media player is daft.
Couple more weeks I'll be getting a budget android handset and installing skyfire for iplayer as I already know it works and I have the option of flashing 2.2 onto the device I want to get.
For 200 quid this would have been tempting if I could use the full markeplace.
create extre revenue
Like certain big operators replacing the default email or messenger/voice apps with their own, that charge and customise the UI with their own branding to obfuscate the free to use apps ?
Surely not ? *coughs* ORANGE...*coughs* *San Francisco*
I see both.
Maybe both sides of my brain or dominant,or weak. I see then spin clockwise, then one or two anti-clockwise.
I'm getting a headache.
Orange San Francisco
But surprised to hear the SF described as it was. All the reviews I've seen so far have descibed the screen as comparable to hansets costing much more, and given the price for 2.1 and OLED ,plus payg availability it's the handset I'm planning to get. In video test it aslo seems pretty nippy.
Come on, 800x480 oled screen with gps as well for 99 quid !
Dawin
matter of fact Darwin still beleived in God and creation. He viewed evolution as an ongoing process which God started off. Modern evolution theory is as similar to Darwin as an i7 quad core is to Babbage's analytical engine
how much for a DVD drive ?
£66 ? You're kidding right ?
I got mine brand new on Amazon for about £20.
new movie editor ?
Nothing new about pitvie, it's been around a long time. And just like windows movie maker, while it does the job there's far more capable editors available from the add programs menu.
As to rhythmbox syncing music automatically. If it's only 2gb available I'd much prefer to back it up to my external hadr disk than trust a flaky server on the cloud.
Overall looking forward to trying out the upgrade
Not cool
Not a cool guy, but then neither is the article.
As some one said he had a tough time recovering from the plane crash and this affrected his work after, but don;t forget even after he left apple,he still had a job doing he what loved doing, just for fun advising and working of things behind the scenes for token pay.
There was no Apple ocmputer without him, Steve Jobs was and is a marketing man. Yeah, apple needed him or it might have got nowhere but Steve Jobs wasn't the one who made, built or even understood how to make the apple computer.
As to the failed music festivals, you're defining success in terms of money. He never expected to make money, he hoped he would,it would have been nice, but just like everything he's done since, he does it because he wants to and because he can afford to.
BTW. Not an apple fan boy, I've never had or desired a mac or an iphone but I realise they had a big part in where PC's are today as an acceptable thing when all other people were saying home computers would never catch on.
Middleman ?
i.e., the middleman retailer is not responsible for the product sold, the creator is,
umm. not quite right in the UK.
When you buy a product from someone like PC World,if there is a problem with it they are responsible for sorting it out. They try to TELL you to deal with the manufacturer but it is them under consumer law who have to repair it or send it off for you. They just don't want the hassle and try to fob people off.
humour.
The remark was purely to be tongue in cheek .
I do use ubuntu purely ecause it's easier than debian with things like multimedia, and initial setup.
I have used debian, mandriva, suse, fedora in the past and stick with what I like best.
I have used linux since 1998 and am always telling people how easy it is to use these days.
Certainly if you have compatible hardware it easier to set up than windows.
I don't think I put people off. I extolled Tuxpaint to someone yesterday (tuxpaint day 7 year anniversary)
and they installed it for their kid.
Opensource and ANY version of linux is great.
ubuntu
EvilGraham: Ubuntu is actually an African word that means "I can't install Debian".
I thought it meant "I don't like Debian" ;-)
Two week summer ?
So that 14 days at 24 hours/five minutes talktime an hour - that 28 hours of talk time over 2 weeks.
Not too bad.
My minutes work out about 1 hours worth over a month.
Oops. Hang on. just realised 1/2 the tie will be at night !
netbook os.
Jim 45
There isn't a missed opportunity with linux.
xandros/linpus etc. give you the tools to do what you want with a netbook as said.
I suspect that a lot of people want a netbook to do more and the current versions of netbook linux distros do all of that.
Jaunty netbook remix is optimised for the hardware, has a fast boot time and do much more than the supplied linuxes do..
As for XP. I'm dual booting with full XP pro and it runs fine on the aspire one with 1gb ram and 120 gig hard disk. I use it as a replacement for my 4 year old desktop.
Office 2007 runs fine as does Colin mcrae rally 2, star wars rogue squadron, Fifa 2001, Superbike 2001.
Older games admittedly but great to play.
My desktop wouldn't run the latest games so I haven't lost out by geting rid of it.
It's interesting that I can use ubuntu intrepid or xp pro to do everything I normally do on my 6 month old vista laptop. Which runs like a dog BTW.
opt out.
When you register with orange, whiich you don't have to by the way, you're asked if you want to be included in their own directory service and if you want to be included for any marketing etc.
If you say no they flag it on the system. You can ring up to check if you're not sure if you're opted in or out.
Having always opted out on my own numbers with both payg and contract I still got contacted occasionally from firm asking if I want to upgrade.
Having worked for Orange for a number of years I always asked where they got my number from.
If they said they were connected with orange in some way I was able to tell them they were lying and demand they removed my number from their system.
Any company is legally obliged to do so when asked.
A lot of these companies auto dial/sms a telephone range asking you to get in touch which then confirms the number to them ( like spam email) and then pass on these lists to others.
Orange and O2 are quite right to refuse as directory services, unless the law has changed, collect mobile numbers from directory lists, only business/private home numbers (unless XD of course)
orange etc.
Let's just hope that now one had decided to do this all the other operators take note.
WGA is rubbish
Been running XP for a few months on an acer netbook. service pack 3 and all updates installed fine till last week did my usual check for updates and then got error about not having a licensed genuine XP. What the hell !
Rebooted and go the nag screen on log on.
Rolled back and updated again and then no problems. Potty. The most ridiculous thing was cause I sold my main desktop pc and then used my retail XP disc on the netbook I had to ring microsoft the first time and THEY verified my serial.
This is why I mostly use ubuntu these days.
to the overlords
ROTFL. Kevin thats the best rant I've heard. It sums up everything thats wrong with those prosecuting TPB. What a bunch a wazzocks.
