Open Source Fanboys and Corporate Shills Clash Once More

Shocking. M$ is once again self-advertising and yet once again open source blow hards are taking offense. I am shocked! I have NEVER seen this play out before.

Give me a break. Opera this and FF that and Safari is the best thing since spermicidal condoms.

Whatever. I am truly surprised that The Reg and any of you are surprised by this kind of shameless self-promotion. This is what pay-for software...no...this is what ALL corporations do. Repeatedly.

Of course the nay-sayers think their product is better...its THEIR product! Opera blows IMHO. FF has left my angry lately. Safari is a turd and Chrome is decent. IE9 is better than the 8 previous releases and for that I give M$ a http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/thumb_up_32.png but to all you haters for hating on a company for acting like any and every other company you all get a http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/thumb_down_32.png.

Over all this article gets a http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/fail_32.png

Apologies after teacher's 'Linux holding back kids' claim

Stop

No shortage of fan boys...

The only thing cool about Linux is that it is free. I have three different flavors of Linux (Fedora, Ubuntu and openSUSE), two flavors of Windows (XP Pro and Vista Ultimate) and one Mac OS X and I can tell you from personal experience all three crash. All three have programmatic problems and all three have their respective pros and cons.

At the end of the day the Linux fan boys would rather rag on this chick and call her a bunch of names then to educate. I know the story has a nice shiny happy ending. My post is more pointed to the bloggers and such that took this ladies comments and tried turning this into some sort of "Free Linux" movement.

Linux is okay but it is hardly great and whether or not anyone here will admit it the numbers don't lie. Windows is still the top dog and likely will be for many years because Linux STILL doesn't have the maturity it needs to go mainstream.

Stop sign for stop bitching and deal with it fan boys...your day will come...but not today.

Microsoft Silverlight: 10 reasons to love it, 10 reasons to hate it

crashIO

Hating on the Haters

Again I see more MS hating than actual valid points. Personally I am glad Silverlight came around because I am simply tired of Flash and all the rest.

If Silverlight were a Linux based, community developed, unfunded project NO ONE would be saying a single bad word. So look past the fact this is MS for one tick and see if half of the currently tossed around vitriol even holds true.

Likely, if it is like in the States, some regions have local laws requiring DNA retrieval if questioned at the station, which means, more often than not, you are questioned at the station.

I wonder if I can patent my DNA. At least then if they confiscate it if I am detained and have some legal recourse to retrieve "my" property.

AMD is still better than Intel, far and away

However I think AMD needs to focus on home users more than the server side of things for the moment. Solidify its fan base and then branch out. How about a 64bit dual core chip that can run on an x86 OS and actually use the second core? Or if they are hell bent on the server side of things, perhaps a better than current specs hypervisor. Doing the same thing only small, faster and consuming less power isn't going to turn heads, introducing new, outside the box thinking and architecture will.

Before all this though they need to get back to basics. An organism when attacked doesn't get larger, it gets smaller to defent itself and repel the attack, then it goes back to normal. Intel was on the ropes and AMD let them off the hook and now Intel has deep pockets again while AMD suffers. Hold on to what you have AMD before you lose it all.

Gene Simmons blames college kids for ruining music biz

crashIO
Thumb Down

Weak

Right. The college kids ruined music. Napster ruined. Not a record industry in dire need of a swift kick in the backside. I have always been a fan of DIY bands like NOFX and Fugazi so Gene "Foot long tongue" Simmons can rant and rail all he wants, the landscape of the industry has been changed forever, and litigation (despite so many of the people in my country who believe otherwise) is not the answer. Put out a quality album at a decent price, and no one will need to copy it.

PS

Bands make their money touring anyway, everyone knows that. The only industry really suffering is the recording industry and they are the ones that drove us to this in the first place.

PSS

I recall the same argument over cassettes. Get over it.

Pollution

I would think the decrease is due to the drop off in algae and the rest of the microorganisms in the oceans is due to pollution. Coral reefs are bleached and mercury levels are higher now in the oceans than ever before. Thermal venting below the earths mantle does help "scrub" the water but my guess is that system can only handle so much at a time. If we can keep from polluting our oceans then maybe some of these "greenhouse gas" effects will reverse.

Red Hat, Novell sued for patent infringment

PARC

You will recall that Xerox originated email, the mouse and multiple windows shared across a network a long time ago in a galaxy known as San Jose. They did not hold a patent on this emerging tech at the time. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates both heard about this, asked to see it, and were granted access to it (despite the protests of the CTO to the BoD that no patents existed and they could steal these ideas) and next thing you know Apple and MS have new OS GUIs. I would imagine the suit won't stop there. If Xerox were somehow able to backdoor a patent on the GUIs they all use now I would think MS and Mac will not be far behind on paying damages. Likely they are going after the little guys first to help set precedence.

Jihadi-sniffers blame White House for leaking secrets

crashIO

Bah...you all are missing the point.

@Anonymous Coward - Riiiiiiiight...liberals are being paid to make posts...and so are conservatives...I think you are letting people off the hook for their stupid comments...idiocy knows no bounds and the net is a sounding board that proves it... by the minute...thanks for doing your part.

@Everyone else - the point is the video was leaked...and by proxy the network that was penetrated (which could have down the road yielded some good intel) was put on alert by it. The leak happened because government employees make s4it for money (which is why so many are corrupt, and don't pretend you don't have the same problem in GB) and when some jagoff journalist makes them an offer they take it to supplement their income.

SITE was definitely wrong to take this to the White House...intelligence doesn't live their anymore, only cronyism will answer the doorbell. Somehow people still think that the White House has their best interests in mind. It doesn't. I vociferously made this point in 1998 and 99 but in 2000 Bush still got elected. I reiterated this point in the years between 2000 and 2004 only to see Bush elected...again.

Now all of a sudden it is really popular to rip on Bush and I ask...where the f*ck where you guys when it mattered in 2000 and 2004? You are late to the party. Some of the Americans who read this rag even voted for Bush and now are surprised at the result! If you leave your baby alone with a hungry wolf, and the wolf eats the baby...who is at fault? The parent or the wolf? The wolf was just being a wolf. The parent is stupid for trusting it alone with the baby.

But I digress...the point here is the leak should never have happened. That video should have gone to the FBI and the CIA and perhaps the NSA and been completely compartmentalized for analysis. It was simply a poor decision on SITE, they should have known better than to trust the wolf.

Didn't anyone learn from Red Riding Hood? Apparently not.

crashIO

@Eduard Coli

Nope. Not at all. I love Freedom of Speech but that is a right extended to those that happen to have been born in the same country as me. Not to the world. Not to mention that it is likely that the site that hosted that video is in a country in which there are no trademark or copyright laws which makes it fair game.

Now if only the Klan would host their sites off American soil so we could start hacking them to monitor domestic terrorism as well.

Information warfare...you either get it or you don't. I am more concerned about real merc outfits like Blackwater that actually are operating outside any laws of any nation. At the very least they should be held to the same code of conduct as detailed in the UCMJ.

The problem is cost

Geek Squad has to hire low-end techies to make it profitable. These are likely high and college kids that have yet to cut their teeth in the real world. They have all this knowledge and no practical experience so they can and will make mistakes in diagnosing system problems.

I would open up my own shop as well but quite frankly nobody wants to pay $100 an hour to fix a system that is worthless. A five hour diag and repair could be worth more than the system itself!

Been using Linux on the desktop (and for all my servers) at home and work for years.

@ Rick Stockton

So who is at fault then? Sears, CompUSA or Microsoft? Who is really at fault? The person selling (MS) or the people buying (CompUSA)?

You know why most stores don't sell Linux (besides the big kickbacks MS offers these resellers) is that Linux has NO SUPPORT beyond the community.

Like my Grandma is gonna get online and look for a solution as to why her printer doesn't work.

Open source cannot compete with commercial apps because the philosophy is completely different.

You fanboys should know that.

Monopoly my foot!

So does that mean Sun has a monopoly on the Thin Client hardware and software market since they are the biggest players?

*

Does that mean Toyota has a monopoly on the hybrid market because they sold more than anyone else in the last several years?

*

Does that, in any way, shape or form mean those markets are closed off to competitors?

*

The short answer is 'no'. The reason certain software companies were overtaken by MS (Corel, Novell and IBM all come to mind) is because they priced themselves into oblivion. Had they stayed competitive then maybe MS wouldn't be the top dog.

The simple truth is at some point, whether it is near or distant future, MS will go the way of the dinosaur because, like its predecessors something new, better, shinier and faster will come along and usurp the top spot. And when that happens all you people will still be whining about how such and such is better than the current market leader.

Some people just hate a winner. Most of us just hate WHINERS!

crashIO

Get over it

So MS is the big kid on the block with the nicest toys...and still everyone hates him because he is the big kid on the block with the nicest toys.

There is nothing holding anyone back from creating a new OS except that Windows (for all its faults) really does work.

UNIX is not a centrally managed OS, neither is Apple or OSX. Central management is what drives the Windows market in the business world.

Fedora, while great for a free OS, is no replacement for Windows. Sorry Linux fan-boys...you can tell me all day long how superior it is. That don't make it so.

Seems to me that everyone here who is b1tching about MS thinks there is something better out there. Prove it! I bet if I look at everyone who read this columns system it is either a MS platform or a Mac platform (running MS Office) so that pretty much says it all doesn't it?

If Linux is so damn superior then why is SCO going toes up? Why is Fedora free? Trust me... if the community could charge for it, they would. Not every Linux person is as altruistic as they claim.

So stop with this "monopoly" bullsh1t. If there was a truly better product out there people would flock to it, just like they have in the past. MS is not stifling the software market anymore than Starbucks is the coffee market. You all, as consumers, have a choice.

Stop your whining and make it already. You don't want Windows and all its trappings...fine...go with Linux...go with UNIX...go back to DOS even...but don't act like you were forced into Windows at gun point. It is not the only game in town.

So stop acting like douchebags and put your OS where your mouth is.

Online games turn British man into hero

crashIO

M'eh.

Games (violent or no) neither make a person a hero or a psycho. They do not make someone take a chance they might not have otherwise taken. I believe it was a UK politician that recently (last couple of months or so) claimed that a troubled young adult playing GTA and smoking some "super skunk" somehow caused a psychotic break from reality and he went on the town wreaking havoc. Somehow in the story the game and the herb were to blame...not the fact the guy had a case of schizophrenia and was also on some powerful anti-psychotics...but yeah...blame the game. Rubbish. If a person is crazy and likely to hurt or worse kill...a game will not be the catalyst to cause him to go nuts anymore than a movie, or a book or a song would. That line was crossed long before in his own mind. Some folks (for good like Adam) or ill (like GTA weedboy) are just plain stupid (like Adam) or crazy (like GTAboy) or worse they are both.

RE: Intolerance

Joe Jones: You missed my point entirely. My point is religion, if it was nearly as tolerant as its believers claimed...could trump all science without disputing the science. However the church leaders (notice I didn't say spiritual leaders because most spiritual folks, even Christians actually agree with me) have decided to enforce and brace a collection of stories and claim them to be the final authority. Unfortunately that collection of stories has been rewritten so many times as to have diluted (IMHO) much of what it was teaching in the first place. I am not looking for a church of science...we supposedly have that already (ask Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) and they are every bit as corrupt, and full of misinformation as the rest.

Do I believe in God...perhaps. I believe in something greater than myself and God is as good a label as anything else. Do I believe in evolution? I believe in its precepts. Obviously not having been there myself I have to rely on learned individuals smarter than myself (and you). Do I think the park is a bad idea? Yes because it is teaching and entertaining (beyond all reason and data) that people and dinosaurs walked about the planet 2000 years ago. Yet the oldest copy of the Torah is 2500 years old. Explain the discrepancy please. The theme park is bad but it is at least voluntary. Kansas was by far much worse for FORCING the Creationism doctrine in school.

It comes down to this...you shouldn't want creationism in science class anymore than I should want evolution in Church. Simple as that. Theme parks are okay but I have problems with anything religion themed that makes money for the sake of making money. You cannot get rich on religion and consider yourself spiritual.

That is nothing more than neo-Calvinism. And it is wrong.

crashIO

RE: Are people really that stupid?

First: however long it has been in development makes it none the worse retarded and likely going to set many folks back. Thankfully anyone that believes in this is likely not going into a scientific discipline.

Second: You are right...it has to do with a culture of mis/dis-information.

Thirdly: No because we have those already. And quite frankly it seems the church missed the boat on that...it would have been much easier to look at evolution as a whole and say "Man that God really is something else to come up with this plan!"

instead of the ignorant drivel espoused by some Americans in regards to evolution.

And for my points...religion should be the why...not the how of it all. Ignorance is not wholly an American commodity. I have heard just as much stupid rhetoric in the UK. However I am embarassed that my country seems to keep bringing this nonsense up. It seems to me that religion can be (if people chose for it to be) so malleable (sp?) as to allow whatever science to take hold and then take credit for that! It is like saving the life of a doctor who goes on to save 100s of lives. You get a small credit for everyone that doctor saves because you saved him. Flawed argument I know but it has a better framework than most these days.

'As I watch England turn into a quivering pile of dung'

crashIO

To Chuck Hammond

As one Yank to another thanks for cocking up my point with your drivel. What exactly would have been accomplished if those sailors had died? Could Britain win a prolonged engagement with Iran and could we help? The obvious answer is 'No'.

And quite frankly what we did in WW2 does NOT give us carte blanche on the stage of world affairs. Divisive rhetoric such as yours is exactly why the world has a poor opinion of us.

The truth is the Middle East hates us not for our freedoms, not for our lack of morals or anything other than NATO's (not just USA) incredibly bad foreign policy during the Cold War. Prior to that they hate Britiain for the empire that dominated them for so long. In the eyes of the Middle East they have been oppressed for centuries.

The Western world has done nothing to remedy these image issues and the bile you spill from your mouth does not help. Does this mean Iran was in the right? Absolutely NOT! They acted liked spoiled little children and someday they will be spanked for acting out.

What Iran did constitutes an act of war and I am sure the British government made that quite clear when dealing with Tehran. However to say those sailors should have died just to save face and possibly ignite yet another conflict in the region is ludicrous.

Iraq is the worst foreign policy move this country has ever done and it has seriously undermined our legitimate operations in Afghanistan. If you are a true conservative patriot than you and your likeminded fellows should do everything you can to put the kabosh on Bush before he does further damage.

I am a true American. I support my country in all things. And my government only when it deserves it.

Remember your history. It goes back more than the 3 decades you wish to recall.

crashIO

Lame. Incredibly undoubtedly lame. For shame.

Get over yourselves. The gentleman (used loosely) whom we shall apparently call 'Bill' is quite obviously someone of low education.

How dare you classify all Americans by this twits comments. To be sure we treat the French in much the same fashion but rarely, if ever, the British. Which in historical terms seems strange since France helped wrest America from the monarchy. However that is not my point. My point is all this ranting about how we (USA) all suck and how you are so blessed with the intelligence to know how great you really are.

Rubbish. You are just as guilty for electing Blair as we are for electing Bush. You have no grounds on which to act so pious. For when you had members of your government calling for Blair to not engage with Iraq, so did we. When you had citizens crying out to not participate, so did we. And in the end neither of our governments listened to us.

Personally I think your sailors and marines did a fine job protecting themselves, their interests and keeping a tense situation developing into a full blown crisis. So my hat is off to all of them for keeping their wits about them.

So rant and rave and rail against my country if you must. Go ahead if it makes you feel better about yourselves. This 'Bill' character is obviously not the embassador of my country and certainly is not the best we have to offer. Oh and as for that crack earlier about "the south"; I would like to remind you that bluegrass and country and western music has roots in your farmlands. Or did you recently outlaw "fiddle playing"?
