iPad 2 spawns updated iOS and apps

Shane Menshik

Snore...

Not even worth calling this an update is it? The speed at which Android is innovating and moving forward makes Apple look like they are sitting in neutral.. The competition has arrived, and Apple is still trying to give out crubs for updates when everyone else is giving out more power and innovation. Think its time Apple take its fanboys and go home return to their niche market share pre-the iphone madness. iOS = the cool factor is gone, the hipster factor is no more, it's now looking like old apple all over again.. bring on the cheap Apple devices to try to squeeze as much dollars outa suckers as possible.

iPad 2? Let's be kind and call it iPad 1.5

Shane Menshik
WTF?

Android is innovating faster..

The iPad didn't have any real apps built for it either outa the gate.. But it didn't take long for those to start showing up - and I bet in 3 months you will see quite the offerings.. Android does however do a better job of making use of existing widgets and apps built for the phone version by taking advantage of the desktop space.. not to mention Honeycomb/android already has better notifications and has done more faster than apple in terms of turn around time to market for new features.. Here we are a year later with the iPad 2 and its demo'd with the features it should have had outa the gate and still nothing fresh and exciting. If you ask me - Apple is stuck in neutral now that the competition has arrived.. and its just going to look even worse 3 months to 6 months from now.. iOS needs an overhaul.

From Adobe info about 10.0 64bit Beta and 10.1 future 64bit beta.

Alert

Flash 64Bit Linux Version Confusion - it was never 10.1 beta - was 10.0 beta

Yah - it was 10.0.45.2 was latest version of 64bit flash - that had been just kinda a stopping point and put on hold as adobe has been focused on 10.1 development for 32bit all platforms. So they kinda just kept it around.. but now that a major security bug was found in 10.0.45.2, instead of going back and fixing the 64bit version of 10.0.45.2 they just took it offline all together.. SOoooo I'm betting now that 10.1 is official for 32bit / all platforms, they are close to putting out a 10.1 64bit alpha to get that ball rolling again.. Hence forget patching 10.0.x - lets work on new 10.1 and move foward... But I'd like to get some official word from adobe.

The current site shows 10.1 beta for 64bit is now closed, when in fact there to my knowledge was NEVER a 10.1 beta, alpha or antyhing else for 64bit linux.. YET...That line on the site and all the news sites that picked it up on the net should state 10.0 Beta Is now closed for 64bit linux... and 10.1 64bit linux beta is not yet available...

Suppliers fall over themselves to support Exchange 2010

Are you kidding?

Seriously - who cares - go to zimbra or move to google apps.. Forget that horrible piece of software. SMB's is where exchange was making some bucks forever but now there is 0 reason for most SMB's even to own their own server.. Forget all that downtime / money lost paying someone to constantly maintain and update that Microsoft junk, - outsource it to a hosted provider and save your company some bucks and headaches.. Get rid of your IT GUY and outsource that too.

Exchange / outlook / Microsoft $$ licenses = soooo old school.. time to get with the times and get a new game plan people!

ISP's will block - Opening up your Desktop is NOT smart!

First up - Their little video on their site talks about getting out from servers who are controlled by others - well guess what - who is going to provide the reverse lookup and conduit to bypass the incoming port blocks by your isp? :)

Second - there are many reasons SMART administrators use servers. Servers are (or should be) redundant, fail-over, have backups, and multiple drives in a raid to prevent data loss. Oh and fast outbound connections and security in place to lock down everything but the webserver.

I can see a ton of Hackers right now grinning from ear to ear about this announcement.. imagine a virus like some of these worms that go in and send out masses amount of spam... Now they can use these viruses to infect all these nice little home web servers and flood the search engine bots with massive amounts of spam as well.

The future is the cloud and moving data away from a single source of failure and into the datacenter where the infrastructure is in place to protect and server up that data to you anywhere in the world..

Those people who think its a good idea because facebook or myspace won't have control over your data - well guess what - if your page is not password protected, your data will be available in google - if it is password protected there is still the possibility of a 0 day hack that comes out to access all of these nice little home based servers. It wont be long for us to all hear about this happening..

If you want something to NOT be public - then take a computer disconnect it from the net, type up the information on that computer only, and then burry it in the foundation of a building you know will not be destroyed any-time soon. Even then some ailen in the future will find it and put it in one of their museums.

Windows 7’s XP Mode — Virtually worth the effort

I do this already ;)

I do this already with Ubuntu.. So why the hell would I want to pay more for Windows 7 and get a performance / feature downgrade...

Its simple.

Its easy - Just virtualize the old XP apps, host them in the datacenter / cloud, and install a customized ubuntu for all workstations.. Get away from having to have windows on your desktops and start saving time and money.

Wow ...

Soooo $500 for the server, then $500 for a windows OS that I have to boot once, twice, three times a week... or Vmware ESXi w/ many many many copies of linux on it running 24/7 for a year w/o a reboot.. Which I pay $0 extra for... hmmm.. thats a tough one, and really tough when everyone has sooo much extra cash sittin around to spend on software ;) and less performing software at that..

Adobe sales are flat in tough market

Shane Menshik
Thumb Down

Waaaaaaay too much..

I agree with the above posts - price is the issue here. As a long time buyer of macromedia suites and a former customer of devnet from macromedia, the number one issue here is PRICE. You would think they would want to floood the market with their tools but instead they are forcing us all to look elsewhere for tools to do our jobs. I think they have a powerful suite of tools - but most people don't use all of them all the time, but the option should be there for when we want to use em. Lower the cost to around $500 and they would sell MUCH MUCH MORE. I hate buying adobe software as well because by the time we decide to go with the new version the next one is almost out the door, so we buy CS(x) and then see the new CS come out and then they want even more money. I think market will bring change in their pricing structure soon enough, and competition from other sources such as Google, Microsoft, and open-source. I don't think this upgrade was as poor of an upgrade as Office 2007 ( I like adobe's new apps ) - but as some users are starting to feel it not worth the upgrade they will and already have started looking for alternatives which means less adoption for flash and our toolsets..

But didn't google...

But didn't google already win this patent?

http://www.informationweek.com/news/storage/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=202400961

Funny how it took MS 1 year to come up with the idea about 1 year after google obtained the patent. Prob just another PR attempt by MS to once again claim that they "Have those shows too". MS is the damn kid that steals your science project and then claims it as their own.
