Re: At last

RE: "Do you post comments as a challenge....?"

He posts because he thinks he's being funny and he enjoys the attention and thrill of being known to lots of users on the forums. He reminds me of my first job where some unknown non entity used to scrawl the most idiotic comments on the toilet cubicle walls. he did it until someone caught him at it and actually quit his job, which wasn't worth having in the first place, because everyone kept laughing AT him rather than with him. True wit is a very rare thing. Big dumb guy doesn't have it.

The fact that scum floats does not preclude the scum sucker being a bottom dweller. It can rise to the surface to feed and then sink back to its dwelling on the bottom.

Re: Pricing oddities

The US paper edition had illustrations and so does the ebook edition. The UK paper edition had no illustrations and neither does the ebook. That's the size discrepancy, and maybe the price difference too.

The US edition doesn't need notes to explain the words; they already changed the words. If you live outside the UK and want to read the original UK version then you're stuffed. Beyond this stupid Geo-restriction, which didn't exist with the paper books, she did a much better job at this than most interested parties expected. Certainly better than the big publishing houses can do. Shame it took her so long. I expect when you have more money than god there are lots of other distractions to fill your time with.

Re: DRM format

The books aren't DRM'd. They have a watermark of the buyers name but they can be read, converted, backed up, transferred to your Amazon kindle library, whatever. All of which is a big surprise to many and puts the big publishing houses to shame. Oh, and its available as EPUB; a nice open specification format. And, by all accounts, there are a lot of people prepared to buy them if the availability of the web site yesterday is anything to go by. Not me though.

Re: Why?

@Tzael - touch centric OS

You say that Windows 8 is a touch centric OS. What version, then, is to be released for non touch screen devices, and when can we get a look at it? All reports I have seen so far state that this is the version for both types of device which is, for me, useless. This OS is going nowhere near my desktop or laptop devices unless it changes radically from what it now is. A touch centric OS is, by definition, never going to be more than a compromise on a non touch screen device, in the same way that traditional mouse and keyboard windows was never more than a compromise on a tablet. Better stock up on Win 7 now. I think MS will be supporting that version for a long time to come.

How do I turn off Metro?

I did a search and tried the method given and it didn't work. Is there another way in the preview edition?

A link would be nice.

Re: In the pay of who???

Just as valid to ask who is paying you for these comment board assertions that attempt to plant negative impressions in the minds of the ignorant.

Well?

Who is it?

And don't say 'no one' because I wont believe you.

RE: Fleshy Bits and operational limits

I suppose we're reaching EOL (end of life). All the signs have been there to see; the manufacturer hasn't shown much interest in support for a while now and upgrades have been noticeably thin on the ground. Prepare for humanity V2.0.

Well it did add a NSFW tag to the title which no doubt drew in a heck of a lot more viewers than it would have done ordinarily.

@Good neighbo(u)r and friend

I'm sure he was, but, with all respect, that is irrelevant. He was also a lousy father to his first daughter. Can we define the man based solely on any of these facts? Nope. He was all of these things and we are stupid to ignore the bits we don't like.

Anyway, I suspect that the professor was reacting, as are so many of us, not so much to Steve Jobs the man, but rather to the overwhelming gush of nauseating sycophancy that flooded the internet and more traditional media following his death. It isn't personal. It just needs some balance to de-sanctify the guy. If ever a word was overused to the point of meaninglessness it is the word genius. He wasnt a genius. He was clever and he knew some clever people and he knew how to use them. He was successful in economic terms; maybe not so much in other ways. He knew and did some stupid things too; some of that hippy stuff I have read you being scathing about in others from time to time.

How do I get sucked into these things? Enough! :-)

RE epub is the source format of .azw

No, you are wrong. AZW is Amazons version of MOBI. Neither of them have anything to do with EPUB. There are several things that EPUB is capable of that MOBI isnt - such as drop caps for one. EPUB and MOBI/AZW are different formats. I haven't a clue what you are on about with this compilation business, and I'm not convinced you do either. Point me to an epub compiler please, seriously, because I never heard of such a thing until now. Also point me towards just one viewer that handles such a compiled epub. I really am curious now in case I missed something.

Thumb Up

Whats wrong with the name LibreOffice?

For me its because it doesn't roll easily off the tongue when spoken aloud. There is a distinct break between Libre and Office that causes a discord which is never a good thing when marketing something. Also, in my mind, it conjures up images of Citizen Smith and Rick from the Young Ones - Freedom! Free Office, man! Yeah! That's probably just subjective though.

That said, the program is great and I use it all the time. And it still opens some old docs of mine that MS Office no longer does.

Geoffrey W

Maybe...

But unless the streaming service improves its selection drastically and soon then it will be the streaming service which goes under first. There are sooooooo many movies and tv series unavailable on streaming, including most new releases, that the DVD service becomes indispensible.

<I'm not gay but (as the line goes) I have gay friends>

Absolutely on your post. And I think you will find that most of us have gay friends and acquaintances; We just don't always know it, which, thinking about it, is a shame. They aren't all flaming whoopsies, poets, or luvvies. I know policeman, brick layer, construction electrician, engineer...bigots would be shocked if they knew, so, don't tell them that man or woman sitting next to them on the bus is a you-know-what.

The clue is in the details. The complaint comes from the 'Scottish Game Keepers Association'.

Game = Grouse = Money = Eagle food.

Eagle = problem.

Previous Solution = wipe em out.

Current solution = Too much sympathy for eagles so first try to blacken their reputation and then wipe em out, surreptitiously, with guns and poisoned bait, blaming decline on poachers and egg hunters and ramblers who must be kept at bay at all costs.

So it was you!

You where the audience the studios had in mind when they insisted on the optimistic ending. You were the one the studios thought wouldn't understand what was going on when they stuck the Blade Runner for Dummies narration on the top of it.

Geoffrey W

Fixed release schedule?

The worst thing about Firefox 6 for me was that page scrolling was randomly broken. More often than not the mouse wheel would scroll down the page very intermittently and not back up again. Sometimes it would move down a little then jerk back to the top. Sometimes it even did this using the cursor keys. And then, after some fiddling, it worked again. Then it stopped working again. It did this on many Register pages.

I accept that this is probably due in part to my hardware config but I have neither the time nor the inclination to spend time trying to fix it myself, so I went back to 5 which showed no hint of this behaviour.

However, with Moz's new fixed schedule does this mean I will have to stick with 5 for a minimum 6 weeks before I can try again and see if it now works in version 7? No minor service releases in the interim?

Is customer irritation the new black (the latest fashion) with software companies? Ubuntu is doing it very successfully, as is Gnome, and now Moz to a lesser degree but improving fast as it becomes more and more irritating. Sigh...

Maybe...

Maybe someone can patent the USA patent system, then no one else can have it legally, and huge and costly patent wars will erupt between the patent systems of the world and they all become bankrupt, and extinct...allowing new life forms to evolve without fear.

@I had a laugh the other week

Smug? You accuse "Them" of being smug?

So what actual scientific data did you present to gatecrash their little party and make them cry? Other than a silly, and rather suspect, ad hominem attack?

I suspect their silence was more akin to the silence that would ensue if at a royal garden party someone dropped their pants and shit on the floor. Its more likely embarrassment. But then again, I wasn't there so who knows? May it really was the blinding light of truth revealed that stunned them into shock.

Geoffrey W

You have excessive expectations

Having been to a University, even before recent dumbing down shenanigans, I found that, on the whole, those I met there were neither smarter nor stupider than those in the outside world. Yes, many were clever but that doesn't necessarily make them smart. Ah, fun days.

@Or are all MINIs driven by cretins?

I've noticed that pretty much any car driven by someone who looks on them as something more than just personal transport, and treats cars as a lifestyle choice, and who follows all the latest trends and models in cars, and thinks Top Gear is cool, appears to be driven by a cretin.

Heck. If you're the type that thinks all cars of a particular model or make are driven by cretins and to be avoided, then there is a good chance that your own car, whatever it is, will at times appear to be driven by a cretin as you swerve around other cars or slam on the brakes for no readily apparent reason.

If you assume that all cars, including your own, (and my own) are driven by cretins then you may get home in one piece.

Geoffrey W
Happy

Sacrilege?

You're using religious terminology for a car? If you think those original minis were less ugly than the new one then you're wearing nostalgia goggles. I remember a work colleague in the late 1970's buying one new because everyone said how wonderful they were. It was a basic shell of a car with zero frills. You could see the disappointment in his face, though he would never admit it. Its a fantasy that doesn't live up to its reputation. He drove it 6 months before buying a Ford Fiesta. I'd rather drive a Sports Ka.

Geoffrey W

Now then, be fair...

Almost ALL cell phone users stumble around the streets like zombies, with their ruling monads clamped tightly to the side of their heads, in their continuing attempts to be (un)dead.

Geoffrey W

If they give up their position in the church they will have to work for a living like the rest of us and have less opportunity to enjoy life at the level they were enjoying

Geoffrey W

title?

Is that how using a non-computer works? You queue items and watch those after waiting a period? Of course you can do better than this if you use a web browser on a computer. Then you just browse through the catalog and if a film/program is available for streaming you just play it then, no waiting or queuing. As often as you like. Leave it in the middle and resume later where you left off. I was extremely sceptical about streaming until we got the service and now I wouldnt be without it. I sometimes stream the content to our TV set. The things you cannot get streaming, which is quite a lot of stuff, you can get via DVD. And all for $9.99 per month. I guess the price quoted in the article is before tax.

Geoffrey W

@But where do you want to draw the line?

How 'bout not being nasty to anyone for anything unless they really deserve it? Anyone who is nasty to someone for no reason, just because its fun? They're just dicks and deserve the nasty. That stupid male macho mockery so beloved of lads everywhere just masks some inner insecurity and they need to grow up.

RE: Hmmm

I agree. And even worse if everyone has a gun.

There were people with guns at the Arizona shooting, and there was a report (probably from that commie channel MSNBC) of there being one man with a gun who almost shot another man with a gun because he thought he was the original shooter. Someone held him back in time.

This does strike me as a major flaw though. If everyone in a crowd has a gun and pulls it out then how does one figure out who is the bad guy if you didn't actually see who began it? You see someone shooting someone else so you shoot that guy. Someone else sees you shoot him and figures you must be the bad guy and shoots you. And on and on, before the police come along and shoot everyone, just to be safe.

Geoffrey W

Ok then

"Roman Polanski?"

Ok, so that's two. And both of them under pressure from the USA. Don't let association with Polanski's case tarnish Assanges case though; In most modern countries what he did isn't even a criminal offense, if an offense at all.

Geoffrey W

RE: Too much EGO

You're just using that as a stick to beat him with. If he did publish quickly then you, or someone like you, would criticise him for doing it too quickly and not taking care with the data. You are part of the damage limitation task force and I claim my five pounds.

Geoffrey W

@Lee

<QUOTE>he makes himself the story rather than the cases of corruption and naughtiness his organisation are uncovering.</QUOTE>

I think it more likely that others are making Assange the story. If you can do nothing about the embarrassing details of the story then change the focus of where everyone is looking to divert their attention from the details. Standard technique, surely.

Geoffrey W
Troll

To be even more specific...

<QUOTE>"But handguns, and firearms in general, do not kill people."

He's right. People kill people. To be more specific, people with guns kill people.</QUOTE>

*USAians* with guns kill people. Its not only people in other countries who hate the USA; they hate themselves.

As has been pointed out countless times in other discussions, the ownership of guns doesn't lead to shooting people (reference Canada and some other European country whose name I cant remember), but it seems being a USA citizen does.

Geoffrey W

@Tomato, tomahto

Suppose Julian Assange comes to your house in person, breaks down your door and steals all your photographs and documents and posts them on a great big bill board in town. Would you chastise him for that?

What I presented is just silly. And you are likewise presenting a hypothetical situation, which as far as I know hasn't happened, and you certainly give no instances of it happening so as far as "you" know it hasn't happened, and you are asking us to consider it and take it into account when judging Wikileaks. First find an instance then come back and try again.

Geoffrey W

Westboro

I'd like to see the US do something similar to the members of the Westboro Church ("God Hates Fags") who deliver their insulting messages in person at the funerals of dead soldiers.
